Tokens Defined by Un-Cards

New 22 Jul 2024 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 2 Comments

We have the technology to create tokens that have their qualities defined elsewhere, including by other cards (i.e. Tarmogoyf tokens). Could this be used to create a token defined by an silver border card that works within the rules? (I.e. create a Krark's Other Thumb token)

The rules could handle it provided the Un-card works in the main rules.

Executing Problematic Mechanics

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 5 Comments

Modern horizons 3 is interesting to me in that three of the major mechanics in the set were once considered failed or problematic mechanics. Kindred was considered a failure almost immediately after lorwyn and was abandoned. It was meant to be a card type and you now have a defunct card type. You used kindred not only in the tarmogoyf deck but also in a different way as an identifier in the eldrazi deck. Energy was awesome flavor wise and was a success but you failed to balance it mechanically and you had to ban several cards and because of that it seems you hesitated to return to this mechanic in standard. Finally devoid was considered a do nothing mechanic that was not popular. You used all three of these mechanics in modern horizons 3 but they are a big success. What has changed? Is it the execution? Is it experience? Why use these mechanics for such a high profile set knowing their history? Does this give hope for other mechanics that were not popular to return

First, energy was quite popular, the highest scoring mechanic in Kaladesh. Yes, a bunch of cards ended up being too strong, but that means a lot of people played with it.Second, Kindred (formerly tribal) wasn’t unpopular. Our issue with it was it led to a slippery slope where we added a lot of words on cards for little effect. Players have asked for its return.Third, devoid was unpopular, but I think we just positioned it wrong. We made it a mechanic that didn’t do anything which upset people. Had we made it a supertype, I don’t think anyone would have blinked at it.So what happened in Modern Horizons III?We brought back energy, a popular mechanic that players have been begging us to bring back for years. We brought back Kindred (renamed), but that’s not a big element of the set. Again, it’s something players have been asking for.We brought back devoid because we were doing Eldrazi, which was much more popular than devoid. I don’t think devoid is why the Eldrazi theme is popular. The Eldrazi are why the Eldrazi theme is popular. Devoid is just a callback, one we need to make the theme work mechanically.

Tarmogoyf as French Vanilla

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 1 Comments

To be French vanilla, you have to have no rules text other than keyword abilities, so Tarmogoyf is not French vanilla. But it’s mechanicaly identical to a card with no abilities and the stat line “the number of card types among cards in all graveyards/the number of card types among cards in all graveyards” which would technically be vanilla science it only has stats.

Only having stats is not the same as not having rules text. 2/2 is just simpler than */*.

Categorizing Tarmogoyf's Abilities

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by secretgiant 12 Comments

Would Tarmogoyf be considered vanilla because it has no abilities, french vanilla because it's power and toughness are defined in the text of the card (albeit not by an ability), or neither because complexity or any other reason?

To be vanilla you have to have no rules text (not no abilities), so Tarmogoys if not vanilla. To be French vanilla, you have to have no rules text other than keyword abilities, so Tarmogoyf is not French vanilla.

Lhurgoyfs in Modern Horizons III

New 08 Jun 2024 Asked by thetitan555 21 Comments

Plus, Modern Horizons III does have a green Lhurgoyf and a Green Lhurgoyf aura that makes Tarmogoyf tokens, so it’s not as if green missed out on all the Lhurgoyf goodness.
I thought those cards were in the Commander subsets, not MH3 proper?

You are correct. I was just looking at Lhurgoyfs as a whole in the database.

Nethergoyf's Color Query

New 07 Jun 2024 Asked by michel475193362 50 Comments

Why is "Nethergoyf" black? "Tarmogoyf" is one of the few iconic green creatures that has supported green for many years, and its successor should have been in green. I don't think it should have been given to black just because it is also possible in black.

Before Modern Horizons III, there were four green Lhurgoyfs and two black ones (plus two red ones, a white one, and a blue one). Green didn’t have the monopoly on Lhurgoyfs. Plus, Modern Horizons III does have a green Lhurgoyf and a Green Lhurgoyf aura that makes Tarmogoyf tokens, so it’s not as if green missed out on all the Lhurgoyf goodness.

Classic Tokens Appreciation

New 31 May 2024 Asked by sapphicvalkyrja 32 Comments

As a Magic old-timer who just finished a "Serra Angel tokens" Commander deck inspired by Historian's Boon and the special Treizeci, Sun of Serra card from Heroes of the Realm that was floating around some months back, I love the Tarmogoyf tokens in the new Jund Commander deck. They're a great way to give a nod to Magic's history, and I hope we see this sort of thing again (though it feels like it could be easy to over-do them so moderation seems best). Please pass on some high-fives for "classic creatures as tokens" idea!

Will do.

Token Method Standard

New 27 May 2024 Asked by sombramainexe 6 Comments

Is the "Tarmogoyf token" method the new standard? I.E. if Roxanne, Starfall Savant was one set later, would she make a "Meteorite token" rather than defining it?
Separately, will you be going back to change any of these on old card like her, or Llanowar Mentor?

I think Modern Horizons sets do things other sets don’t do. I don’t know of any errata in this area.

Token Mana Costs

New 27 May 2024 Asked by wildcardgamez 4 Comments

I've noticed in MH3 that some cards making tokens of existing cards (Such as Tarmogoyf and Spellgorger Wierd) have the mana cost of the original card. Does this mean past cards that did this (such as the many spellshapers and most recently Roxanne Starfall Savant creating Meteorite tokens) will be errata'd to include the mana cost?

I don’t believe so, but that’s more a guess than something I definitively know.

Addressing Power Creep

New 23 May 2024 Asked by pallidpunkprincess 6 Comments

Re:Power CreepI think the root of the issue is that some long time players are sad that multiformat all-stars are being outclassed. Cards like Liliana of the Veil barely see standard play let alone modern or legacy or Tarmogoyf being so relatively weak that a commander making token copies of it feels like a silly novelty more than a terrifying threat. These cards that are very powerful in theory. They haven't been 1 to 1 outclassed but never the less are functionally not relavent in modern/legacy. This is a hard pill for many players to swallow when these cards were titans for nearly a decade.I think calling the argument of calling this shift power creep or not power creep is splitting hairs and maybe there needs to be some new terminology coined.

It’s the nature of a game that keeps releasing new content. There are formats like Old School (which only use cards from ‘93, '94, and '95) if you want to play with exclusively older cards.

Silver-Border Card Types

New 16 May 2024 Asked by crcusqueen 8 Comments

silver-border rules question: when playing with R&D's Secret Lair, how many card types are there for stuff like Tarmogoyf?

Reminder text is not rules text. R&D Secret Lair being on the battlefield along with Tarmogoyf doesn’t change the card types that exist.

Un-Rules Card Types

New 12 May 2024 Asked by kitsovereign 26 Comments

Un-Rules question: If I'm playing with R&D's Secret Lair, what old stuff counts as "different" card types to grow my Tarmogoyf? Defunct types like interrupt and mana source? Renamed types like summon and tribal? What about "enchant creature" and "poly artifact" - are those unique card types or just janky subtypes?

If you’re using R&D’s Secret Lair, you can count card types that were card types at the time of the card’s printing, things like Interrupt or Mana Source. Note that list is pretty short.

UB Product Praise

New 25 Mar 2024 Asked by izzipurrito 53 Comments

I've been showering you with a lot of criticism towards Universes Beyond. So I wanted to tell you something I liked about the new recent UB products.I really like the reprints. In particular, the Horizon lands in Doctor Who, and Tarmogoyf and Walking Ballista in Fallout. These reprints are super welcome, and I greatly appreciate them.I look forward to more reprints of strong cards like these in future sets. (Please give us fetchlands in precons)

I’m glad you enjoy them.

Tarmogoyf Reprint Possibility

When or If: Tarmogoyf being reprinted in a standard-legal set

If. The biggest issue is power level, but I don’t think it’s out of the question to consider. Again, not a play designer.

Would Tarmogoyf be errated to include Battle?

It’s not errata. It counts card types. Battle is a card type.

Not until they exist on a card.

Constructed vs Limited Packs

New 21 Jun 2022 Asked by bethlehemslouch-blog 75 Comments

Mark, when will you finally make a product not intended for constructed? I'm sick of opening junk constructed rares like Tarmogoyf in my draft packs. Can't we just see what a magic set would look like if it were only designed to provide a quality limited experience and wasn't shackled to the demands of constructed formats?

: )

Tarmogoyf Loyalty in Planeswalker

New 01 Apr 2022 Asked by abzanhouseguest 34 Comments

Hi Mark will we see a planeswalker with Tarmogoyf loyalty( its loyalty is equal to the number of card types among cards in all graveyards plus 1) this year?

It’s in Streets of New Capenna. It’s also secretly Jace.
