Token Name Harmonization

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by snowsuit-letter 39 Comments

Does R&D have any plans to harmonize the names and rules text of tokens, similar to what happened to creature types in Llorwyn? For instance, Thopter artifact creature tokens are usually 1/1 fliers, but Leonardo da Vinci makes 0/2 flying Thopters. So the name "thopter token" doesn't uniquely tell you what the rules text is. Likewise, there are 2/2 Knights with firs strike, 2/2 Knights with trample and haste, 1/1 colorless Spirits, 1/1 white Spirits, and many more examples.

We do within any one set, but we allow variance between sets.

Historic Criticism Parallels

New 08 Mar 2024 Asked by vedney 47 Comments

Did people have the same flavour complaints about thopters and gnomes being historic during Dominaria, as people do about some stuff being or not being crimes?

Players always have complaints. : )

Thopter Confusion

New 08 Jan 2024 Asked by paradoxicaloutcome 40 Comments

Was there concern about putting both a 0/0 thopter and a 1/1 thopter in the same set? It feels like it could lead to some confusion

Usually when something like this happens, one is the commonly used one and one is the by-product of a small (often one) number of high rarity cards.

Urza's Hot Tub Rules

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by drchimrichells 32 Comments

I have an Urza themed deck with "Urza's Hot Tub" in it. Can I discard "Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter" to the hot tub to go get "Urza, Academy Headmaster"? does the "apostrophe s" in liberator make this a no go?

The word has to be exact (aka the “complete” word). I will point out that the Un-rules care about the specific card in question, and some cards that are Urza’s ________ in English might be ______ of Urza in other languages. For example, the Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese versions of Liberator Urza’s Battlethopter have “Urza” in their title.

Saheeli and Kaladesh

New 28 Sep 2023 Asked by mattgmueller 64 Comments

Hey Mark, first time asking for Birthday Trivia. Saheeli is my favorite walker so maybe something about her or Kaladesh, or Thopters, something Saheeli-adjacent is cool too. Thank you for being awesome and have a great day.

Originally, Chandra was going to be the face of Kaladesh, but we realized she made more sense for Aether Revolt, so we designed a new planeswalker. We wanted to play up the invention theme, so we made a character that was an amazing inventor, Saheeli.Happy Birthday!

Edible Token Policy

New 16 Feb 2023 Asked by basketofpuppies 28 Comments

I ran across an acorn stamp conundrum the other day, and was hoping you could help. I control Claire D’Loon, Thopter Pie Network, and one of the Network’s tokens, represented by my favorite candy. You have specifically stated that I cannot eat the delicious cards, so what happens when the token dies?

Candy tokens are not cards. You *can* eat delicious tokens when they are made of (edible) candy.

Blue Color Pie Debate

New 14 Dec 2022 Asked by namelessorc 23 Comments

In the latest Odds and Ends, it mentions that artifact sacrificing isn't in blue, both in the color pie nor in the themes of the set. I definitely understand the set themes, as it wouldn't fit in any of the archetypes, but the color pie feels odd. Even in BRO, it got Splitting the Powerstone, and has gotten a lot of other effects like this, such as Clan Crafter, Anchor to Reality or Sai, Master Thopterist. Is this not in blue's pie anymore?

Nope.

Token Representation Rules

New 23 Sep 2022 Asked by xisuthrus 33 Comments

un-rules question: If I control Claire D'Loon and someone tucks my Thopter Pie Network token, do I have to shuffle the piece of food that represents it into my library?

You can represent any token that’s going into your library with a Magic token card.

Universes Beyond Possible Reprints

New 30 Jul 2022 Asked by ne4782 45 Comments

Would you ever put a reprint of a regular Magic card in a Universes Beyond set? For example, Ornithopter would be a perfect fit for Dune.

If the name fits, it’s possible.

If, but we can dream of Omnath Ornithopter.

Evergreen Status of Tokens

New 20 Jul 2022 Asked by ryandimiragent 32 Comments

You said that treasures are deciduous, not evergreen. I believe the same applies for other standard tokens like food and thopters. Are there any standard tokens that are evergreen, not deciduous?

No.

Possibility of Errata on Acorn Cards

New 21 Dec 2021 Asked by zblaster 28 Comments

Are acorn (formerly silver) cards able to be errata’d? I was looking at some old favorites and feel it’s now appropriate to allow Thopter Pie Network to allow the thopters to pay two, tap and sac for 3 life.

We have errataed old Un-cards, but what you’re asking for is functional errata which we don’t do very often.

Trivia on Thopeters

New 28 Aug 2021 Asked by phaenyxx 99 Comments

Hi Mark, It's my birthday today and I wanted to ask some trivia on thopeters, if you have some. Also, these 6 next premier sets got me soooooo hyped, wizards did a really good job !

I’ll share one of R&D’s favorite stories. Richard Garfield is meeting with the head of a company that we were considering licensing from to make a trading card game. The person asks who would be working on it? Richard answers the same R&D team that works on the rest of our products including Magic. The person then wants assurances that we don’t make any broken cards like the one Magic made. Richard is curious what card he considers the “broken card”. Black Lotus? No. Another of the Power Nine? No. Library of Alexandria? No. Mishra’s Workshop? No. What card was he referring to? Ornithopter! The danger of Ornithopter became a running joke in R&D for years. Happy Birthday!

Designing Zero Cost Creatures

New 27 Dec 2020 Asked by philosophile42 29 Comments

How much design space is there for Zero cost creatures like ornithopter, and kobolds? Are they problematic?

It’s limited. There’s not a lot of options without repeating yourself. There’s also play design concerns if you have too many in any one environment.

Possibilities for Vehicle Types

New 27 Nov 2020 Asked by yeckit-blog 47 Comments

Is it possible for vehicles to have other types? Like a vehicle also being a Thopter?

I guess it’s possible for a Vehicle to gain a creature type when it gets crewed.

Speaking Mana Costs

New 16 May 2020 Asked by tmbocheeko 26 Comments

How does R&D say hybrid costs when speaking mana costs? Especially the weirder ones like the Mutate ability on the Apexes from Ikoria and things like Thopter Foundry from Alara? What about twobrid like Beseech the Queen and Reaper King?

Let’s say a cost is 2(b/r), we’d say “two hybrid - black/red”. If a card was 2(2/w), we’d say “two hybrid - two/white”’

Green Cards and Thopter Tokens

New 04 Apr 2020 Asked by mrfrinkinpuff 29 Comments

A green deck can play a colorless artifact creature with flying. Would it be a bend or a break for a green card to create a thopter token?

The ability to play a colorless card in a monocolored deck does not make the ability “in color”.

Flavor of Mutate Mechanic

New 04 Apr 2020 Asked by typical-johnnyspikevorthos-blog 92 Comments

While I like Mutate mechanically, I find the flavor of mutate to be fascinatingly strange. In Ikoria it is strange enough when a giant moth turns into a Cat Nightmare Dinosaur, but using creature types outside of Ikoria you can have things like a faerie, a spirit, a thopter, a wall, or Sarkhan turning into a Cat Nightmare Dinosaur. Was this considered when developing mutate?

It’s what we in R&D calls the “elephant in the boots problem”. With 20,000+ cards we can make the flavor work some of the time, but there are just going to be cards that want to be open-ended mechanically that result in weird flavor combinations. We just accept that as part of the nature of a trading card game.

So far, no.
