Appreciating the Otters in Magic

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by magicalotterlady 11 Comments

Please pass my thanks to whomever decided otters should be a thing in Magic.I've carried an otter plushie around with me to events through my entire Magic playing career, so almost 15 years. Ive had an otter along for the ride from pretty much every FNM to PTQs to traveling everywhere I could drive within 8 hours to play Legacy for several years or even trips to the other side of the US for large events a couple of times.I was screeching and immediately tried building an otter deck when Lutri and Theving Otter came out with Ikoria. I was literally babbling with joy at the otters in Wilds of Eldraine for MONTHS. To say I'm beside myself with excitement for Bloomburrow would almost be an understatement. My favorite thing to build or play in Magic are tribal-based decks. I built an angel one as my second ever deck (Shards of Alara/Zendikar standard) so I could teach my mom to play before she passed. I was known for a knight/Sword of _____ and _____ deck for years. I've even played Merfolk and Tribal Lightning Bolt (burn) decks a time or two. But I can now have my beloved otters as a theme for my deck.Literally the only way that it could be more perfect for me would have been if there was an Otter Knight named Rora for my little tournament companion. So thank you for making my love for Magic even stronger by adding otters.

I like making otter people happy. : )

Purpose of Bloomburrow Deck

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by vodalianjavelineer 1 Comments

Maro, Bloomburrow looks amazing, but I have one problem. I am a kitchen table player and I love creature type decks. Some decks (like my knights) regularly get new cards, but others (like my kithkin) might see a new card once a decade. For Bloomburrow, I know that rats, squirrels, and birds are likely to show up I. The future and have a ton of past cards to use, but for the types like rabbits or raccoons, I imagine they will not be supported long term. Why should I make a deck for those types?

Bloomburrow existing will make us create them more than we would of had it not existed. If volume of creature types is a core issue to you (and I get why it would be), yeah, I’d stick to the creature types that have more history with the game. But there are a lot of players who will have a lot of fun using Rabbits or Raccoons even if they have to stretch a bit (and probably play changelings).

Eldraine Brawl Frames

New 13 Sep 2019 Asked by aniodia 53 Comments

I've seen so many of the showcase cards out of Eldraine, and they are absolutely beautiful. Is there any way to get the Brawl-specific cards (i.e. Chulane, Syr Gwyn, Knights' Charge, Banish into Fable, etc.) in the showcase frame as well?

The showcase frame in Throne of Eldraine is solely for the adventure cards of which there are no new ones in the Brawl decks. There is a note I can pass along for a desire for extended art frames of Brawl rares and mythic rares in collector boosters in the future.

Dominaria's History

New 12 Dec 2018 Asked by discipleofzur-blog 33 Comments

Hey Mark, i wanted to ask something about Dominaria. When the set was being designed, did anyone think about reintroducing the Knights of Thorn or any of Tivadar's descendants for some red/goblin hate in the knight department? I've always been curious about it, considering goblins were a big thing in the set.

Dominaria has too much history to fit it all in one set. Luckily, chances of return are high.

Dominaria Trivia

New 05 Apr 2018 Asked by benny-bubbles 57 Comments

It's my birthday today, so could I get some trivia on what the second set of dominaria would have been or just something interesting about Karn. Thanks :)

The story was longer and the climax was to happen in Salad. We plan to use the mechanic for it elsewhere, but the set did have a Knight theme, a little of which we added to Dominaria when Salad went away. Happy Birthday!

Reserved List Criteria

New 16 Feb 2016 Asked by firemindmtg-blog 20 Comments

Why is Vodalian Knights on the reserved list? It's not really a phenomenal card, and it doesn't demolish any formats.

Being on the Reserved List is merely about being a rare card in an expansion from a certain time frame that didn’t happen to get chosen to be the 20% that we kept for potential reprints.

Color Pie and First Strike

New 04 Dec 2012 Asked by mrtickles22 10 Comments

White/Blue also has first strike. Or do you mean that R&D doesn't like such raw power as Nharwal, Illusionary Wall, Snow Devil and Vodalian Knights?

Normally when I talk color pie, I stick to this millenium for examples. : )
