Color Pie and Category Pricing

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by shadowman2099 26 Comments

Color Pie Question. Can a card’s base rate (mana value, power, toughness, etc.) cause color Pie bends or breaks? I say yes, but others have said no since card balance and the color pie are different topics according to them. For instance, targeted creature removal is generally more restrictive/less efficient in White compared to Black. If you take the card Quicksand Whirlpool and reduce the Mana cost from 5W to 1W, would this be 1. only a card balance issue, 2. a bend, or 3. a break?

There are places where rate matters in the color pie, but usually it’s does this color do this effect or not?

Challenges of Variety and Consistency

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by arixordragc 129 Comments

"From a big picture, Magic excels at creating variety and does poorly at consistency."I would argue that historically, it's done well at both. Variety and consistency are not opposing concepts; you don't need to sacrifice one for the sake of the other. Ravnica, Theros, Zendikar and Bloomburrow are all very different places, but they're easy to see side by side. You could take a character from each of those planes and put them in a story together, and they would all be very distinctive, but none would feel out of place. Put someone from Duskmourn in that lineup, and they'd stick out like a Ghostbuster in Middle Earth. The complaints aren't from people who, as you seem to be implying, dislike variety. They just think that even in a very varied setting, you can still have cohesiveness, and Duskmourn's aesthetic breaks the cohesiveness that Magic has actually done very well at previously even with its great variety (there are other reasons people may dislike it as well of course, but that's most relevant to this point).

There are people who thought Ravnica *did* break the mold of what Magic was. A city? Core fantasy is not urban. There are people who thought Theros *did* break the mold of what Magic was. Theros borrowed too heavily from an existing mythology. Magic is about creating its own things, not being influenced by non-fantasy real world sources. There are people who thought Zendikar *did* break the mold of what Magic was. It leaned to heavily into adventure tropes and not enough on basic fantasy. There are people who thought Bloomburrow *did* break the mold. It was too cutesy and didn’t have the gravitas of a real Magic set. The idea that the thing you felt went too far is the actual thing that went too far is what everyone believes when we stretch to a place that they aren’t comfortable with. But that place varies from person to person. And more importantly, it changes as the game adapts. Innistrad was once the world that went a step too far, and now it’s the thing Duskmourn is being compared against as the sign that we went too far.Magic has since its beginning changed and adapted. And it’s always pushing into new territory because that’s what it means to change and adapt. That doesn’t mean every person is going to agree with everything we do. It’s fine to not like something, but please be aware that for each player who felt we went too far, there are many others excited by what we’re doing. My point when I say “we do poor at consistency” is that there’s no definitive dividing point. There’s not a clear line in the sand where this side “is Magic” and this side “isn’t Magic”. That line varies person to person. The reason we have 27,000+ cards is so that each person can focus on “what Magic is” for themselves.

Basic Deserts Proposal

New 02 May 2024 Asked by cptnbg 42 Comments

Will there ever be "sand covered" basics that act as basic deserts?

Nope. We consider the snow-covered basics a mistake.

Desert Supertype Possibility

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by drummerjon131 6 Comments

If or when: desert basic lands and deserts creating a special "sand" or "desert theme" mana the way snow lands do... or I guess that would make desert a super type...
...If or when desert as a super type?

If on deserts becoming a supertype.

Real Card Line

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by obazervazi 41 Comments

To illustrate that every person has a different line for what's a "real" Magic card, my line is cards that can't easily be ruled on if you know the comprehensive rules. Most, but not all acorn cards cross the line, as does Panglacial Wurm. I do like a lot of nearly black border acorn cards, and even ask to include Gift Shop and Push Your Luck in my attraction deck. Universes Beyond as a line in the sand does not matter to me.

How do you feel about Tug of War? It wasn’t acorn because of rules (the Rules Manager said we could make it eternal), but because it didn’t feel right being eternal.

Mechanics and Intended Features

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by blaze-1013 57 Comments

Changing exert to stun counters would be a large change since it stops working with untap effects and being able to use those, such as Vizier of Tumbling Sands, is an intended feature of the mechanic. Same is true of persist/undying using finality. It is a feature, not a bug, that you can sac a persist/undying creature twice, reanimate it, then do it twice more. Also, changing old effects to use scry or surveil was largely a buff and these changes would be nerfs which generally upsets players.

Fine points.

Two Word Creature Types

New 05 Oct 2023 Asked by annorax 33 Comments

The two word technology was created to solve a specific issue in Doctor Who. We’re not using it to redo cards from the past. It gets confusing quickly if used too often. --> Not only that, the suggestion ("sand warrior" as a two word creature type) wouldn't fix the problem because changelings would still have that creature type. It'd cause a cascade of rules changes to make it work & is honestly not worth fixing because Hazezon Tamar wouldn't be played outside fringe Commander decks either way.

It’s important to judge how large a problem is when trying to figure out whether it’s worth fixing.

Hazezon Tamar Rule Quirks

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by stainlesssteven 46 Comments

The two word creature type discussion of time lord makes me think of hazezon tamar. The card makes "sand warriors" and exiles all "sand warriors" when it leaves. It does this by exiling all creatures with the type "sand" and "warrior" leading to some unintuitive rulings, like it will exile all creatures with all creature types (or exile a players board with Shields of Velis Vel). In my mind the card is clearly meant to exile the tokens it made. I get that magic has a bunch of weird rules interactions but this seems like something that can be "fixed" easily. I'm not saying it should be changed but what is your opinion? Do you like it the way it is now or would you go back and make it so it exiles only the tokens he makes?

Middle-Eastern World

New 03 Oct 2023 Asked by cassiesuccubus 47 Comments

If/When: A Middle-Eastern/Arabian world? Not Rabiah, just another world with flying carpets, djinns, cool curved sword and lotsa sand.

I’ll say when because Magic is a hungry monster.

Half-Haste Interaction

Immersion and Content Concerns

New 05 Jan 2023 Asked by obazervazi 59 Comments

A thought on Universes Beyond ruining immersion: it's a problem, sure, but I imagine many more people are put off by Magic's frequently gruesome and horrific imagery. I love the really frightening cards, but I'm not going to play them with my more sensitive friends. To those who don't like UB, remember that there isn't one single line in the sand, but dozens that Wizards has to choose whether to cross. There are absolutely people out there who hate your favorite parts of the game.

At least once a year, I get a letter from someone seriously proposing we remove black from the game.

Desert Support Skepticism

New 22 Dec 2022 Asked by mtgblk 40 Comments

Hazezon, Shaper of Sands seems fun, but doesn't seem to have much desert support. I noticed Desert was errata'd to the desert subtype, but other Arabian Nights lands like Oasis, City of Brass and other "desert" lands from the set(according on the story) weren't. We've seen recent errata for creature types like Dinosaurs and Phyrexians to expand support. Any chance we can see some errata to some lands to support the relatively obscure Desert mechanic?

I’m skeptical that we’ll do that.

Legends Legendaries Praise

New 20 Aug 2022 Asked by jtfr96 57 Comments

I just wanna say, as a huge lore nerd and general fan of magic's history, I love everything about the reworked Legends legendaries. They're such a cool way to honor magic's past while being cool designs even if you don't know the history. Also, thank you for making Hazezon still create sand warrior tokens so we can finally get them in paper

Happy to hear you’re enjoying them.

Exchanging Life Totals Nuance

New 27 Mar 2022 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 35 Comments

So if exchanging life totals is just that, does that make the white cards that do it (axis of morality and reverse the sands) bends or full on breaks?

More bend than break.

NIC Card Thousand Faced Shadow

New 02 Feb 2022 Asked by anyguy 39 Comments

Rules Question about the NEO card Thousand Faced Shadow. Their ETB basically triggers if you used the Ninjitsu ability, but why is it written out describing what happens when you Ninjitsu instead of referencing the keyword?FYI its text is: "When Thousand-Faced Shadow enters the battlefield from your hand, if it’s attacking, create a token that’s a copy of another target attacking creature. The token enters the battlefield tapped and attacking." I was think of something like " When ~ enters the battlefield, if its Ninjitsu cost was paid, create a token..."
I know it's not 100% the same since you could trigger the ability in other ways, such as with Ilharg. Or was it intended to work with the few cards that do that instead of the IMHO easier to read text referencing the set mechanic? Or am I missing something entirely, in that case please let me know.
As always thanks for the opportunity to ask questions.

If we don’t use the word, it usually means we couldn’t (templatewise). We aim to make things as easily understandable as possible.

Feedback on D&D/Magic Fusion

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by vereendood 78 Comments

Hi Mark, as a player that dislikes that AFR brought d20 cards to standard and pioneer but resigned myself to roll with it (pun intended. And gameplay is fun, really), I'd like to contribute to the conversation by expressing that I am very happy that Baldur's gate Commander Legends is a supplemental set and really look forward to playing with it as a self-contained experience. I feel that it "just fits" as an innovation booster product unchained from Standard power-level consideration. I hope it will do well and will breed repetition. Also, I'd like to request a conspiracy set focused on Menzoberranzan or the Empire of Sands.

Happy to hear you’re happy about it.For the D&D fans, if we did future Magic products, what part of D&D would you like us to explore?

White’s Catch-Up Mechanism

New 17 Jun 2021 Asked by jacekenai 37 Comments

Why can't "catching up" in terms of cards be in white's slice of the color pie (like Sandstone Oracle)? It still would keep white from getting ahead of opponents in terms of cards, and seems like it would work in 1v1 more similar to current white draw while helping more in commander. And the flavor of having equal resources fits too : )

It would be too effective in a white weenie deck that purposefully uses up resources quickly.

Token Generator Creation Concerns

New 23 Mar 2021 Asked by rakdos-cultists 98 Comments

Hey Mark I know this is a common complaint In multiple play groups that play eternal formats that a couple of older token generators don't have have physical tokens outside of proxy or home made examples being Phelddagrifs 1/1 hippos, dune-broods 1/1 sand creature tokens, and boris devilbloons 1/1 minor demons. Have there been any thought about doing a spellbook type release to fill up these missing tokens?

I can pass along the request.

Sand as a Supertype
