Storm Scale Changes

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by mysticleviathan 25 Comments

I know we’ve seen some mechanics rise and fall over the years, but going from a 9 to a 4 on the storm scale is a pretty substantial drop. What changed from R&D’s perspective to have it go from it would need a minor miracle to return to more likely than not to return?

For a while play design preferred eight cards, so I thought threshold was done.

Storm in Standard Miracle

What was the major miracle that happened for us to see Storm in standard?

The start of cameo mechanics in premier sets.

Considering Two Set Blocks

New 23 May 2024 Asked by roborabbitart 0 Comments

So I understand that three set blocks tend to wear people out, but has there been any consideration for two set blocks? I've been feeling more and more over the years that a lot of recent mechanics just don't get enough support because they're often one-and-done, and it'll be a miracle to ever see them again. It also feels like recent settings don't get fleshed out and don't get time to breathe, save Eldraine which got revisited surprisingly quickly.

Battle for Zendikar, Shadows over Innistrad, Kaladesh, Amonkhet, and Ixalan were all two set blocks.

Hand Tracking Mechanics

New 02 Feb 2024 Asked by j-waffles 31 Comments

In a previous answer you said effects that care about how long a card has been in your hand is alchemy territory, but your skeptical of if they would do it. Funnily enough, They have done it! Captain eberhart reduces the cost of cards you’ve drawn this turn and raises the cost of cards your opponent drew this turn. Technically this could work in paper as it functions like sylvan library or miracle, although there are practical issues since tracking across an entire turn is very different than checking only when you draw the cards

Disguise Card Borders

New 01 Feb 2024 Asked by heavenlyevan 29 Comments

Was there any thought to creating a unique border aspect for disguise card? Something that visually communicates that a card has disguise? Like the miracle border or the legendary crown.

Not that I’m aware of. Special borders are usually reserved for cards that need to stand out on the battlefield and disguise is not relevant at that point.

Red/Blue Keyword vs Tokens

New 22 Jan 2023 Asked by king-of-masks-deactivated202307 64 Comments

Which is more likely to happen first? A shared Red/Blue evergreen keyword or an enchantment token a la food/clues/blood/treasure?

The latter. 🐿️ - Prowess happening was a minor miracle.

Rampage Mechanic Return

What minor miracle would be needed to bring back Rampage?

Rampage has a bunch of strikes against it, the biggest being X-1 is never great built into a mechanic.

Miracle Mechanic Usage

New 17 Sep 2022 Asked by sapphic-recluse 42 Comments

Heya! Another question about Universes Beyond, pardon, but something I saw that surprised me a touch was a new card with Miracle! I recall some words from you(?) about how Miracle caused issues in tournament play, so I wasn't expecting to see new stuff with the mechanic. Is the use of Miracle here in part because of top-down design with an external IP? In part because it's a Commander product and not intended for competitive environments?

Also, Triumph of Saint Catherine looks like a fun card -- kudos to the design team!

Commander is far away from high-end tournament play, so there are things we’ll do there we might not do in a premier set.

Cascade and Miracle Cards

New 17 Sep 2022 Asked by blazinjsin 23 Comments

I'm stoked about new cascade and miracle cards in the 40K decks, and I love the new stuff done with both. All 4 decks look nasty. High fives all around

High fives to be applied.

Issues with Miracle

New 27 Jun 2022 Asked by xeddicus 32 Comments

What are the issues with Miracle? Other than I assume if you make too many you end up with pointless main casting costs.

It requires a precise logistical act of drawing cards in tournaments.

If or when, more Miracle cards?

If. They had a bunch of issues.

Praise for Kamigawa Neon Dynasty

New 19 Feb 2022 Asked by shining-dawn 23 Comments

Hi I just want to say I think Kamigawa neon dynasty is the perfect set, it's everything I ever wanted. Every single draft theme would have been my favorite part of a different set, so getting them all in one set is like a miracle. I loved having both sides of this set and how they interact.

I’m happy you’re happy.

Color Influence on Settings

New 04 Oct 2021 Asked by cicakemlelo 55 Comments

In settings like New Phyrexia or Innistrad, other colors take on some aspects which are normally most closely associated with black. Have there been or will there be any settings which are "tinted" by other colors in a similar way? (E.g. if by some minor miracle we were to visit Serra's Realm, I imagine cards there might be "whiteshifted" instead.) ((Judgment doesn't really count, it just has more white and green cards outright, rather than bleeding white and green into the other colors.))

Most worlds lean towards a color, and it’s not always black. Theros leaned white and green. Tarkir leaned red. Kaladesh leaned blue.

Creature with Miracle Possibility

When or if, creature with miracle?

If. I don’t know of miracles are ever returning, let alone a tweak on them.

Prospects for Symmetrical Slivers

New 15 Aug 2021 Asked by rwssr 37 Comments

Hi Mark, I’m going to be the miracle that gets symmetrical Slivers printed at least two more times, including finishing off the Future Sight hive.

I never say never, but it’s a longshot. We don’t tend to do symmetrical effects on creatures any more.

New Card Frame Styles

New 14 May 2021 Asked by justherefortheschadenfreude 31 Comments

Hi Mark. When a new card frame style is created, like for snow in Kaldheim, are all color variants created whether they are used or not? For instance, did a gold-colored frame for miracle cards exist before it was known there would be no multi-colored miracles?

We don’t make frames until we need them, but it’s a lot easier to make a frame where it already exists in other colors, as certain elements can be reused.

Possibility of Symmetrical Slivers

New 11 May 2021 Asked by rwssr 37 Comments

If it would take a major miracle for symmetrical Slivers in Standard, do I have a better chance of seeing symmetrical Slivers in a supplemental set? Or are they the same?

Not really. The chances are slim for either.

Potential Use of Watermarks

New 10 Aug 2020 Asked by ultwarrior 50 Comments

Watermarks can't matter mechanically, but could they be used as a visual reminder in the same fashion as card frames (like with Miracle)? Say we have another set that features batching like Dominaria, could everything in that batch have a watermark simply as a shorthand reminder that it's in the batch?

Sure.

I assume it can, as long as the creature has flash.

Miracle Mechanic Iterations

New 06 Aug 2019 Asked by theoreticalspace 23 Comments

You mentioned that an issue with Miracle is how it makes player have to draw differently. Did any iteration of miracle try to have Miracle cards shuffled face up in the deck?

There are numerous tournament concerns with that suggestion. When we experimented with the idea back in Tempest, we toyed with the idea of different colored card backs. Note that this was before opaque sleeves were a thing,
