Mechanics - Old vs New

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by misenaive-blog 1 Comments

Hey Mark, just wanted to say that I'm a big fan of graveyard mechanics and seeing Threshold return in Bloomburrow as well as Delirium in Duskmourn has made me really happy. I would like to ask how do you balance using returning mechanics vs creating new ones when designing sets in completely new planes.

If an old mechanic will accomplish what we need, we try to use the old mechanic, but there are a lot of factors that can make us want to use something new instead.

Changing Instants to Supertypes

New 23 Jun 2024 Asked by gramplot 3 Comments

One point I never saw mentioned against instants becoming supertypes - it would substantially nerf delirium, goyf, etc.

Any change has ramifications. I’m less worried about that particular one. We do create new card types on occasion.

Mechanic Vocabulary Issue

New 26 Oct 2023 Asked by gridnack 50 Comments

I think Descend X, “if you descended this turn”, and “Fathomless decent”, have a vocabulary issue like Haunt did. They all mean different things. Descend 4 is a condition (similar to delirium/threshold). “If you descended this turn” is an action (similar to “if you milled a permanent or a permanent died” which is “Revolt”). Fathomless descent is neither a condition nor an action; it functions closer to Undergrowth/Chroma as a counting mechanic. As a tiny amount of feedback, using vocabulary in 3 different contexts makes it more difficult to grok (and remember).

Would using three different words for things so mechanically connected not cause more confusion?

Return of Mechanics

New 18 Oct 2023 Asked by gtheodo313 17 Comments

Hey Mark justa wanted to ask for a maybe if Energy and Delirium are coming back soon. Could they most possibly be coming back in a premier or a supplamental set?

Both are eligible to return.

Naming 'Four Different Mana' Abilities

New 21 Apr 2022 Asked by anubix88 25 Comments

Why wasn't "four different mana value" abilities named like Delirium or Threshold?

We have one named mechanic per faction. Having one faction have two named keywords/ability words while others had one would have caused endless letters.

Impact of New Card Type

New 24 Mar 2022 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 30 Comments

Adding a new card type has interactions with Tarmagoyf and Delirium as well as any other similar effects, would this be taken into account? Or if it made any of these older cards/effects too powerful would the individual cards or group be banned?

Individual cards can be banned. As I like to say, we don’t keep the future hostage of the past.

Thoughts on Unholy Heat

New 05 Mar 2022 Asked by ultra-chocolatebouquetkid 23 Comments

Hi Mark, I hope you're having a good week. What are your thoughts on the card Unholy Heat? I've heard many players say it's too close to a red Doom Blade. And yes, I know there is the Delirium hoop to jump through before you get the 6 damage. But in Eternal formats like Historic and Modern, this happens incidentally. What do you think? Does this card bypass Red struggling against high toughness creatures?

6 is the upper limit for red direct damage. The hoop should matter for some portion of the game, although I get how it might be easier late game.

Delirium vs Threshold Design Ease

New 15 Jun 2021 Asked by pontemosca 37 Comments

Hi Maro, I really like both Delirium and Threshold. In MH2 Delirium got 8 new cards, yey! but Threshold only one :(. Is Delirium more easy to design or development?

Threshold is easier to abuse, thus harder to balance.

Delirium Mechanic Consideration

New 01 Jun 2021 Asked by observemenow 37 Comments

Delirium is famously one of the hardest mechanics to pull off both in constructed and limited. Did you ever consider making it a scaling ability? (for each card type do X)

No. Limiting yourself to just scaling effects really limits a mechanic.

Delirium's storm scale rank

Hi Mark, where is Delirium in storm scale?

I’d call it an 8.

How directly did Tarmogoyf influence delirium?

Not that much.

Threshold vs Eternalize

New 26 Mar 2019 Asked by phyrexiathings 30 Comments

It’s weird that threshold is a 9 on storm scale when Eternalize is an 8. If Eternalize is both narrow and unpopular, and only works on the plane if Amonkhet, how is it better off than threshold, which seems like a perfectly fine mechanic (just count to 7, works with graveyard themes, and creatures dying).

Maybe Eternalize should be a 9, but I’m skeptical of threshold coming back. (Shadows over Innistrad messed with delirium, a twist on threshold, and that didn’t go great.) But hey, I never say never. It could happen.

Un-cards and Ability Words

New 11 Oct 2018 Asked by elmdormesdoram 21 Comments

Are there silver bordered cards that specifically care about ability words like landfall or delirium? We have, for example, My first tome that looks at flavor text, Duh that looks at reminder text, and many others that look at the full text box, but I can't remember any about ability words. If there aren't, can we get some in Un-4?

Some Un-cards look at all text which includes ability words and reminder text.

Tribal Type Question

New 09 Jun 2018 Asked by ag-kat 70 Comments

With apologies to delirium, why is tribal a card type rather than a supertype? It doesn't seem to fit since it can't stand alone without another card type. I don't know if you'd even bother to change a now obsolete mechanic, but it's always kind of bugged me.

It’s for a technical rules reason that, to be honest, I’ve never really understood.

10 CMC Card Types

New 19 Feb 2018 Asked by jhoald 21 Comments

I'm surprised that Instant is less likely for a 10 cmc card than enchantment when Instant can have so many ways to reduce its cost. Split cards, delve, convoke, affinity, delirium reduction similar to emrakul, etc all make a 10 cmc instant seem entirely possible in the future while the number of effects an 10 cmc enchantment can have seems very narrow. It feels odd that for this answer "we've never done one" is a reason while for serra angel looking at only whats been done was a negative.

The point of the question is that there is very few 10-cost cards we would do as an instant that wouldn’t just be done as a sorcery. Yes, there’s a narrow band of reactionary spells with a significant cost with a built-in cost reduction, but that is just smaller than the space for a 10-cost enchantment.

Host Supertype Impact

New 18 Nov 2017 Asked by kuklash 16 Comments

With the addition of Host as a supertype, will that affect Dilerium abilities and Tarmogyf?

A supertype is not a card type. Tarmogoyf and Delirium care about card types.

Tarmagoyf Too Strong

New 15 Oct 2017 Asked by pretomal 41 Comments

So a Reddit thread about cards that are strong in eternal formats but would be fine in Standard got me thinking. Tarmagoyf would have been mechanically very on theme with Delirium and an exciting reprint. Was Tarmagoyf ever considered as a mythic for Shadows over Inistrad?

We talked about it. It was too strong.

Aftermath Cards Explanation

New 25 May 2017 Asked by kingmagni 29 Comments

You said you created Aftermath cards to help Delirium, but why then are the two cards in the two colors more focused on Delirum, Mouth to Feed and Never to Return, sorceries on both sides?

I said the jumping off point was a brainstorming about helping delirium. The mechanic shifted my ch since the initial brainstorm.

Aftermath Mechanic Origins

New 06 May 2017 Asked by wanderingrootwalla-blog 24 Comments

It's my birthday! Can I get some trivia on aftermath?

It started as an idea of doing split cards to help Delirium. We then put the graveyard twist on it to play into Amonkhet’s graveyard theme.Happy Birthday!

Slivers with Keywords

New 10 Mar 2017 Asked by narrictechna-deactivated2018121 16 Comments

Would we ever see a Sliver with a keyworded ability without the keyword? Such s Delirium, or Improvise?

The shtick with Slivers is that they share abilities. As long as the ability could be shared in a way that was relevant, we’d consider it.
