Oz Novels Public Domain?

New 24 Jun 2024 Asked by makesasound 14 Comments

“I’m not sure Wizards of Oz is in the public domain.” L. Frank Baum’s original Oz novels were all published between 1900 and 1920, and are therefore in the public domain. The iconic 1939 film starring Judy Garland is still under copyright. You can make new adaptations of the Oz novels for free, but if you start borrowing elements introduced in the movie, it starts getting dicey (or expensive) fast.

Public Domain of Wizard of Oz

I’m not sure Wizards of Oz is public domain.

Commander Decklists Availability

New 30 May 2024 Asked by this-loser22-blog 28 Comments

Hi Mark,

I'm really excited for for MH3 and the new commander decks coming out and from what I can see they look like a ton of fun. Please pass along that message to decks' designers. Now I know that the official Magic website is far outside your domain but the fact that I can't go to the official source to SEE the cards in the full decklists and need to go to third party sites to get all that info seems like a major oversight. The cards are available in the official card image gallery but aren't available with the decklists. Do you know if this is something being worked on? It's been an issue for quite a while now. There's no real reason we should be going offsite for this info.Anyway I'm excited for MH3 and the commander decks, I was just hoping my comment could push that up the list of priorities for those that take care of the site. It would make deciding on what deck to preorder much easier (look at the decklists, then use the onsite store locator to find a place near me I can purchase the deck from).

I’ll pass along the note.

Absence of 5-Color Mechanics

New 29 May 2024 Asked by trifas 28 Comments

Domain, Sunburst and Converge were all absent in MH3. Is it because the colorless theme of the set made difficult to make 5-color mechanics work well?

I assume that was a big part of it.

Rabiah Setting Potential

New 08 May 2024 Asked by tevans-living-life 32 Comments

In prep for your upcoming Rabiah scale article, I wanted to give mad props to whoever decided on putting a Rabiah reference in Dominaria United! My question: Has Rabiah been pitched as a setting following the success of Neon Dynasty? Such references seem like a good sign of Magic’s willingness to acknowledge it.

Rabiah’s biggest issue is it’s based on an outside property (one in public domain) and was done at a time where very little world building was done by Wizards. If we wanted to redo it, it’s not far away from doing a brand new world. There’s very little to salvage.

Returning to Rabiah

New 25 Apr 2024 Asked by jaqeax 30 Comments

If/when return to Rabiah? I already know it's if, but why so? Thanks.

If. I did name the scale after it. Rabiah’s biggest problems was it was just someone else’s property (albeit one in public domain).

Bible Verses on Cards

New 25 Mar 2024 Asked by mannymon123 184 Comments

Why do a few cards from older sets have bible verses? Was it a response to the "satanic panic" of the nineties? Retrospectively, I just find it funny.

Early Magic used quotes from sources in the public domain for flavor text.

Single Color Rewards

New 20 Mar 2024 Asked by between-panels-blog 28 Comments

I've got a few chromatic questions!

In recent years, multicolor has become more prevalent - in tournament scenes, in limited, etc. It's just become a lot easier to get good land fixing with the number of dual and tri lands available to players (and mana rocks). This has really led to an increase in "good stuff" decks.
We've seen many incentives for playing multicolor, like the domain mechanic (in all its variations - i.e. chroma) but less stuff like devotion. Really, in recent memory, Theros has been the most focused on multicolor "hate".
Do you see more cards that focus on color in Magic's future, especially cards that incentivize sticking to a single color, or punish splashing?

We’re more likely to reward single color play than punish multicolor play, but we’ll still make both.

DMU Deck Theme Choice

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by titania776 38 Comments

You may not be able to answer this but why wasn’t domain matters chosen for the five color commander deck’s theme in DMU? It seems the deck focuses on more of a colors matter theme rather than domain which was the main set’s choice for multicolored theme.

I had nothing to do with the design of the decks, so this is my best guess. There might not have been enough domain cards to make a domain-focused deck (and by “enough” I mean that worked well in the deck).

Universes Beyond Wishlist

New 01 Mar 2024 Asked by mistymountainsgay 38 Comments

I'm most interested in UB as a way to get me, a magic player, into new things I might not have heard of before, but since it seems today is UB wishlist day:Some kind of classic sci-fi like Asimov, Dune, Enders Game, etc (I know we got Doctor Who, but it felt mostly focused on the modern show/fandom)A specific anime, not just "anime-style" MTG cards but actual iconic characters and momentsA property that only or primarily exists in the form of books, where the MTG art might show things that have never been depicted visually beforeAnything in the public domain, but especially The Wizard of OzAny Broadway show, but especially Little Shop of Horrors or Cats Stories that were part of the inspiration for classic MTG locations, which I think would really beautifully show where the set as a holistic design differs from the sum of its partsI know none of these are particularly likely as more than Secret Lairs (which are a little out of my price range) because most wouldn't have the selling power of huge franchises, but those are my absolute dreams that would get me really excited for a UB set or release.

Thanks.

Arabian Nights Origins

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by rowanalpha 27 Comments

If public domain properties are usable, is Arabian Nights technically the first Universes Beyond set?

Yes, in the sense it’s an outside property, no in that branding didn’t exist yet.

Universes Beyond Scope

New 27 Feb 2024 Asked by corrach 74 Comments

Are Universes Beyond sets necessarily restricted to franchises? I would personally love to see a set based within the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but as an ancient tale, it doesn't have any rights holders to work with.

Public domain properties are fair game for Universes Beyond.

Mana Base Control

New 20 Feb 2024 Asked by j-waffles 31 Comments

There seems to be a staunch lack of mass nonbasic hate in standard & pioneer. Targeted land removal like demolition field, field of ruin, or Boseiju are good for dealing with individually powerful lands; but they don’t meaningfully punish greedy mana bases. Domain has been a tier 1 standard deck since DMU came out, and it’s only ever gotten more options. 4 color omnath dominated standard when it was legal, and multicolor decks in general have access to tons of fixing just with the land-base. Modern at least has blood moon, but standard and pioneer don’t have any mass nonbasic hate. Is this intentional? If so, why?

Hating on greedy mana bases, but not messing up non-greedy mana bases is a challenge.

Domain Keyword Impact

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 35 Comments

Was there ever any thought about making the domain keyword make the color identity of a card all 5 colors? There are the four uncommon legendaries with domain from DMU which can’t ever function optimally as a commander.

We don’t control how color identity is defined.

Domain Keyword Insight

New 25 Jan 2024 Asked by vargenhk 46 Comments

I was noodling around with adding some Domain cards to my cube. When I searched for the word on Gatherer it showed me a bunch of cards that have never had the word "Domain" printed on them, but still counted the number of basic land types. Please give a high-five to whoever decided to put the term in those cards' oracle texts. It makes the database MUCH more useful.

Will do. Domain as an ability word didn’t happen until we brought the mechanic back.

Universes Beyond Possibilities

New 05 Dec 2023 Asked by magical-bridge 38 Comments

In a recent DtW, you referred to Arabian Nights as a sort-of first Universes Beyond set. Do you think we’ll ever see an official UB set based on a public domain story?

It’s not off the table as a possibility.

I’m more inclined to believe when than if. We did do Dracula.

Wastes Type Exclusion

New 21 Oct 2023 Asked by aztecmagic 32 Comments

Any reason wastes aren't their own type? They're the only basic out of the 6 that myriad landscape can't ramp with.

It causes headaches with the tournament rules and play design issues with domain, so we chose not to do it.

AskUrza.com Domain Rights

New 08 Sep 2023 Asked by titania776 28 Comments

When making Unstable was AskUrza.com the first domain that you’ll wanted? If so was there any difficulty getting the rights?

Yes, and no.
