Trivia about Vizzerdrix

New 27 Jun 2024 Asked by hexooze 2 Comments

Hi Mark!
Yesterday is my birthday. May I get trivia among one of my favorite cards - Worldfire, Wurmcoil Engine, Radiant Performer, Sundial of the Infinite, or Vizzerdrix? Or a random card from MH3 not covered by your previous Making Magic articles?

Vizzerdrix got created as a card for a product called Starter. The reason we made it is we had a series of TV commercials, one of which featured Kezzerdrix from Tempest (it involved mixing a wrestler, a chainsaw, and a bunny in a machine). A different ad in the same campaign used an Orgg. So to tie to those, we made a simpler Orgg and Vizzerdrix, as the original cards were too complicated for a beginner product.Happy Belated Birthday!

If/when reprint panglacial wurm as an acorn card

If. I don’t think we have plans to turn eternal cards into acorn cards.

When I cast panglacial wurm while searching, what is actually canonically happening?

The creature is tied to the aether in some way.

Reprints in Limited Format

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by strymon 33 Comments

I just wanted to be a voice in opposition to those upset about reprints like Oko, Elesh Norn, and Wurmcoil Engine. I think it’s awesome that some of these truly legendary cards can exist in an ordinary Limited format for which they are thematically relevant. I have no difficulty understanding that such cards appear so rarely that their impact on the format is minimal, certainly less so than even just the top common of the set. I also understand that Play Boosters are created with more than just Limited in mind. Without Stoneforge Mystic’s history on Constructed, no Limited player would have given it a second glance.

Often I put up someone complaining and it can read as if many people are making this complaint. Many more people are expressing happiness to get the cards than frustration that they potentially can show up in limited games.

Wurm World Preview

I heard rumor of worm typal being a theme in an upcoming set, not to confused with wyrm typal, also featuring in the same set. Can you confirm or deny?

Wurm World is 2027.

Keyword Union Demands

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by curiooftheheart 37 Comments

Hey Mark random question about two new cards. Do you know why Take for a Ride and Colossal Rattlewurm say "~ has flash" instead of "This spell has flash"? It feels like a random stepback on templating changes.

The evergreen keywords formed a union, and there are a lot of demands that we’re meeting because of that.

Real Card Line

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by obazervazi 41 Comments

To illustrate that every person has a different line for what's a "real" Magic card, my line is cards that can't easily be ruled on if you know the comprehensive rules. Most, but not all acorn cards cross the line, as does Panglacial Wurm. I do like a lot of nearly black border acorn cards, and even ask to include Gift Shop and Push Your Luck in my attraction deck. Universes Beyond as a line in the sand does not matter to me.

How do you feel about Tug of War? It wasn’t acorn because of rules (the Rules Manager said we could make it eternal), but because it didn’t feel right being eternal.

Prototype Mechanic Impact

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 28 Comments

The angel and the Phyrexian wurm prototype creatures show up in some decks so I would say that prototype has done *something* imo

I agree that the other post downplayed prototype’s constructed appearance.

Elephant Boots Origin

New 08 Mar 2024 Asked by arcanistlupus 29 Comments

Why do you call it the "elephant in boots" problem when you could call it the "wurm in boots" problem? :D

It stems from a meeting where the issue was boots and an elephant.

Reprint Likelihood

New 03 Mar 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 22 Comments

What's more likely? Krark's Other Thumb being reprinted in non-acorn or Panglacial Wurm (or something with a similar ability) being reprinted in Acorn?

The former.

Panglacial Wurm Podcast?

Idk if Jess was serious or not but if he was can we get an entire podcast about why Panglacial Wurm doesn’t work and its challenges?

I’m not sure there are a significant amount of listeners for that.

Mana Ability Conundrum

New 19 Dec 2023 Asked by aalgot 68 Comments

What happens if a series of replacement effects make a mana ability that we activate while casting panglacial wurm from our library to cause us to search our library?

The Space-Time Continuum breaks. : )

Wurms Need Love

New 05 Nov 2023 Asked by ascan7 42 Comments

What creature types do we feel need love? Wurm please. They are unplayable while being one of the oldest big green creature types.

Being “playable” and being “ competitive” are not synonyms. I hear that you’d like Wurms with a better rate (aka more powerful play-wise), but a lot of people play with them.

Panglacial Wurm Design Space

If the Panglacial Wurm ability worked in the rules and didn't scare the rules manager, do you think there's much design space in it?

Not a lot.

Panglacial Wurm Erratum

New 27 Aug 2023 Asked by faerross 45 Comments

Panglacial WurmI've seen sufficient debate from rules experts about whether or not Panglacial Wurm actually functions within the rules - or if it's merely accepted as an oddity and any possible rules issues brushed off. Regardless, it's odd such a nebulous rules space is permitted for a the benefit of a single card.Has WotC ever considered an erratum to tweak the rules slightly? What were the strongest arguments and obstacles that came up?Example erratum: "While you're searching your library, you may exile P.W. from your library. When you do, you may cast it from exile."This could alternatively be a rules update that formally defines how 'casting while searching' works. This particular version would have mechanical distinctions of possible relevance, but I believe it would preserve the vast majority of the card's function while making the rules surrounding it more straight-forward.

Sometimes we do something that we retroactively realize we shouldn’t have done. Our general strategy is to avoid doing it again rather than double down on figuring out how to make it work a little better.

Panglacial Wurm Rules

New 13 Aug 2023 Asked by mysticleviathan 86 Comments

Which rules manager approved Panglacial Wurm? I don’t understand how it works within the rules.

Don’t tell anyone, but I don’t think it does.Rules Managers juggle a lot, and it’s easy to miss something.

Rules Heavy Cards

New 03 Jul 2023 Asked by nicklbailey 25 Comments

Has R&D ever considered banning in every format such cards as Panglacial Wurm that put a huge weight on the rules?
Is that in part because those cards rarely see tournament play? Would you consider it if such a car became an all format staple. The rules issues of Panglacial Worm with the power-level of stoneforge mystic say?

If Panglacial Worm was causing competitive tournament issues, we’d probably react differently.

Green's Artifact Affinity

New 20 May 2023 Asked by clumsynotdrunk 23 Comments

In a normal standard set, can green mechanically care about artifacts in a positive way (like Teething Wurmlet) or is that a bend/break that only happens in artifact themed sets?

With the right flavor, it’s possible, but overall it’s unlikely.,
