Release of Suspine Lynx

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 2 Comments

Hey mark it’s me the guy thats been begging for mass nonbasic hate in standard/pioneer for months I just saw the card Suspine Lynx was spoiled THIS IS SO AWESOME! twice the cost of Price of progress for half the damage obviously isn’t as good, but price of progress is also too strong for either of those formats anyway. Plus being on a 5/4 with two other relevant abilities is AWESOME! THANK YOU

You’re welcome.

Creature Types Vernacular

New 10 Mar 2024 Asked by miztickow 22 Comments

I tried to find a technical or scientific term for big cats and I found that they fall into a couple categories. Genus Panthera has leo (lion), tigris (tiger), onca (jaguar), pardus (leopard), and uncia (snow leopard). Genus Lynx has bobcats and three different kinds of lynxes. Cheetahs are genus Acinonyx and genus Puma is cougars and jaguarundi. I wish there was a better term than just "big cats" for all of these.

Creature types lean a lot into the vernacular.

Feasibility of a U Cat

New 04 Jul 2021 Asked by nedistro 37 Comments

Mark, I am once again using my birthday trivia to ask after a U cat (four legged, not anthropomorphic). In the past you have replied that there's isn't much U about cats (FALSE! Curiosity! Copy!) and that U has lynx so it can't get a cat (FALSE! Illusions! Phantasms!). SOOOO a U cat - If/When?

If you’re happy when an illusionary four-legged cat, we can probably make it happen.

Card Naming and Similarity Guidelines

New 02 Mar 2020 Asked by masterjerelk 33 Comments

Design question : has there ever been time were you decided against a card name because it was too close of another popular card but whitout similarity in effect? Is it a concern at all? (Exemple: using ancestral in a car name that isn t blue nor draw card)

Spectral Lynx used to be called Spirit Lynx, but changed its name as it didn’t have lifelink, which at the time was informally called “spirit link”.

Hungry Lynx Protection Rule

New 08 Aug 2017 Asked by mandenmeddengulehat 39 Comments

Hi Mark. I saw a spoiler for a card from C17 today, not sure where the spoiler came from, but it looked official (saying this because I hope you can talk about it), so here we go; The card was called Hungry Lynx, I think, and gave cats you control protection from Rats and had reminder text for protection, I did not think cards had this outside of coresets, is it because the ability is now decedious and not evergreen? Hope you are swell.

Deciduous means we occasionally use it, sometimes in supplemental products.

Last Minute Card Fix

New 09 Mar 2015 Asked by cobrakmmndr 27 Comments

Can you give us an example of a last minute card fix?

I took over names and flavor text at the very tail end of Apocalypse. There was a card calked Spirit Lynx. Which would have been fine, but it didn’t have the “spirit link” (later to be named lifelink) ability. I felt the name would cause confusion so I changed it, but it was so late that the collector numbers were locked so I had a small window of names available. I ended up changing it to Spectral Lynx.

Card Naming Challenges

New 20 Apr 2014 Asked by therealmeeotch 36 Comments

I was just telling my wife about collector numbers and how I remember reading an article where, for some reason, a card had to be named or renamed and it had to fall within an alphabetical range because the collector numbers had already been assigned. Since I can't remember more detail than that, could you tell me more about the time(s) this happened?

It’s happened numerous times. The most famous one I was involved in happened during Apocalypse. I was put in charge of names during the very end of Apocalypse so I had to do a final pass on the names. One card was called Spirit Lynx. It was a 2/1 with protection from green and regeneration. It didn’t though have lifelink which at the time was nicknamed “spirit link” after the card in Legends that granted it. I wasn’t going to put out a creature called Spirit Lynx that didn’t have spirit link so I changed the name at the last possible moment. As such, collector numbers were locked so I had very little wiggle room. I ended calling it Spectral Lynx.

Last Minute Name Change

New 02 Sep 2012 Asked by chardish 4 Comments

Have you ever had to change a card's name at the 11th hour, and why?

Spectral Lynx was almost called Spirit Lynx. I got put in charge of the names of the set at last minute and forced them to change it as the card didn’t have lifelink. It was so late we had to fit the name change cub that it didn’t change the collector number.
