Chainsaw as a Weapon

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by aceofmoxes 3 Comments

"I'm curious to hear people's thoughts about the name Chainsaw." Chainsaws are designed for wood. It's weird to make one a weapon. Flesh and bone will clog its motor and ruin it quickly.

Why would I want a weapon that only works on treefolk?

It’s a magic chainsaw. : )

I think a Kobold version of you would be called Bark Rosewater.

Wouldn’t that be either a Dog or Treefolk version of me?

Cactusfolk Plant VS Treefolk

Was there any debate over making OTJ's cactusfolk treefolk instead of plants? If so, any idea why plant won out?

Because Cactuses are plants and not trees.

Treefolk as Green Iconic Creature

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by keimtg 14 Comments

Have you ever considered making your green Iconic creature a treefolk?I like Hydra, but I think its functionality is too focused on +1/+1counters and (X)mana.

There was a period where we tried Treefolk as the iconic and it didn’t take.

Creature Type Uniqueness

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by bcrazy713 111 Comments

Hey Mark, on the topic of players being worried about creature types losing their distinctiveness by being added in with the broader type rather than a specific race (ex. Viashino(Lizard) or Naga(Snake)), I looked to see how many are already currently templated this way and there are ALOT more than I realized.Archaic (Avatar), Aven (Bird), Leonin (Cat), Malamet (Cat), Nishoba (Cat Beast), Daemogoth (Demon), Ainok (Dog), Flamekin (Elemental), Loxodon (Elephant), Mycoid (Fungus), Thallid (Fungus), Akki (Goblin), Boggart (Goblin), Mogg (Goblin), Redcaps (Goblin), Eumidian (Insect), Kraul (Insect), Nantuko (Insect), Khenra (Jackal), Kitsune (Fox), Merrow (Merfolk), Selkie (Merfolk), Triton (Merfolk), Onakke (Ogre), Caryatid (Plant), Nezume (Rat), Rhox (Rhino), Amphin (Salamander), Orochi (Snake), Kami (Spirit), Drogskol (Spirit), Eidolon (Spirit), Ent (LoTR) (Treefolk), Trow (Troll), Kappa (Turtle), Liche (Zombie), Eternal (Zombie), Draugr (Zombie), Nim (Zombie), Skaab (Zombie)

Yep. Most of the ones that didn’t do it entered the game before we made this the default.

Devotion Mechanic Expansion

New 13 Jan 2024 Asked by sdfkjgh 42 Comments

Could devotion be expanded to include creature or permanent types? Like, for instance, devotion to Treefolk, or devotion to enchantments.

Devotion cares about mana symbols. Affinity can care about card types and subtypes.

Creature Type Queries

New 31 Dec 2023 Asked by strodeviking 58 Comments

Hi Mark, I am building a Yargle and Multani deck, and I was wondering two things.1. Was Yargle ever considered to be typed as Frog Horror instead of a Frog Spirit?2. Why is Multani an Elemental and not a Treefolk? His appearance shares a resemblance to a lot of Treefolk we see in Magic.

1. I’m not sure.2. Multani is a Maro. They are elementals that form themselves out of nature. Some of the time, those elements could be parts of trees, but next time it might not.

Creature Type Poll

New 04 Dec 2023 Asked by lylethebloody 51 Comments

Mark,

I wanted to double back with the results of the ask you put out regarding which creature types are in need of some love for our decks. Just like in previous years, I only counted the first 3 creature types if people put multiple types in (I don't have ALL day to do this...) and I only counted creature types that have cards for them in Magic - requesting new creature types is for another ask. With all that in mind...

Dwarves came in first this year with 6 votes! There was then a 5-way tie for second at 4 between Aetherborn, Druids, Myr, Skeleton, and Treefolk. Werewolves and Constructs each got 3 votes.

The people have spoken!

Thanks for doing this.

Iconic Type Challenges

New 01 Oct 2023 Asked by msloper 30 Comments

With the questions about Iconic Creature types, what does it mean when you say a certain creature type (eg, Treefolk for green) doesn’t work? Does that mean not enough design space to include them in enough planes? Or something mechanically that prevents makes it more difficult?Relatedly, have you done a Drive to Work on Iconic and characteristic/Representative Creature types?

It means we tried to do it for some number of sets and the market research showed that it didn’t go over well. There are also a number of needs for iconic creatures, them being focused at rare, that negate some choices. For example, we just want to make common Treefolk and Dinosaurs.I have not had a “Drive to Work” on this topic, so I’ll add it to the “short list”.

Iconic Types Analysis

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by squirreling-dervish 35 Comments

I would like to second Hydra feeling less iconic, and would even say the same for Sphinx. Hydras play well in green, but flavorwise they feel like Dragon's cousin. With Sphinx, the knowledge theme works, but it feels like the 4th flying iconic. My picks would be kraken/serpent and treefolk/elemental.

We tried all those for blue and green and neither did as well as Sphinx or Hydra.

Any are possible. More worlds have Giants, followed by Treefolk.

Typal Strategies Identity

New 23 Jun 2023 Asked by fancifoolery 33 Comments

I am a big fan of typal strategies and I am always happy to see more support fir certain creature types but I feel like recently we've kinda been getting generic typal value things rather than creature types that have their own identity and mechanic like we saw in Lorwyn and Shadowmoor. My favorite example of this is Doran the Seige Tower. It never directly says treefolk in the rules box but the mechanic is very clearly good for treefolk specifically. Rather than Miirym copying dragons just cuz

We make a decent amount of flavor oriented typal cards. Not all creature types have as much mechanical consistency of Treefolk.

Treefolk in Middle Earth

New 22 Jun 2023 Asked by clumsynotdrunk 25 Comments

I just want to say I loved the treefolk elements of Tales from Middle Earth! I just drafted an elf deck with a heavy treefolk top end and it was a blast to play. And I’d love to see similar tribal elements for treefolk on the future!

Noted.

Treefolk Dryad Support

New 14 Apr 2023 Asked by prosperity-post 49 Comments

Could we get more support for Treefolk and Dryads, please? It would be great if we saw the kind of support for those creature types that those in the Ixalan block received (Merfolk, Dinosaurs, Vampires, Pirates).

Treefolk were one of the eight supported creatures types in Lorwyn block. Treefolk have a similar issue to Giants in they tend to be on bigger creatures which is tricky to support a single deck of that creature type. Dryads have a different issue in that we don’t tend to do them much in volume. They also tend to be primarily on smaller creatures, but that’s less of a limitation for creature type mattering.

Legendary Plant Possibility

Wrenn's Color Shift

New 27 Dec 2022 Asked by quantext 65 Comments

Could Wrenn's secondary color change depending on the treefolk she bonds with? Like if she bonded with a treefolk from Lorwyn could it shift her to being white/green or black/green?

Theoretically.

Wrenn Trivia Shared

New 15 Dec 2022 Asked by krogania 48 Comments

Hey Maro for my birthday trivia I was wondering about any fun facts for Wrenn (or her treefolk). And after she first came out she was a 6 on the venser scale, would you now say she's a 7? :P

Wrenn was originally created in a brainstorming of making planeswalkers that we’re more untraditional. We liked her so much, we stuck her in Modern Horizons. I think Wrenn dropped to a 5, so it’s not tree related.Happy Birthday!
