Perception of Urza Block Ostracization

New 17 May 2022 Asked by rekian 42 Comments

In a recent poll in Twitter listing top 4 sets in MTG history, Urza’s Saga and block as a whole received a spot in a lot of them, almost on pair with Invasion, Innistrad or Ravnica. Nonetheless, it seems WOTC still ostracizes the block. So, so many memorable cards that helped define so many decks: Carpet of Flowers, Sneak Attack, Show and Tell, Gaea’s Cradle, Serra’s Sanctum, Gilded Drake, Yawgmoth’s Will, Grim Monolith, Crop Rotation, Frantic Search, Replenish, Academy Rector, Opalescence, Yawgmoth’s Bargain, Powder Keg, Rofellos… and I could go on and on. I love that beautiful, relaxed, cartoony artwork too. Any love for Urzas Block here?

How exactly do we “ostracize” Urza’s block?

Evergreen Keywords and Colors

New 28 Apr 2022 Asked by nicklbailey 42 Comments

"Do you feel like you are stretching evergreen keywords to too many colors. Reach used to be only green now white and red can both get it. Green gets flying in almost ever set now and even blue has haste and is getting vigilance."For reference, Mono-Green has gotten exactly 5 creatures with Flying in premier sets since the Tarkir block. Three are parts of dragon cycles, one is a callback to an iconic green dragon and one is Gilded Goose, which has 0 power and so mechanically is similar to reach. The claim that Green gets flying almost every set is very false.

Gilded Goose and Monogreen Discrepancy

New 27 Dec 2020 Asked by exclusionmage 43 Comments

So is gilded goose also monogreen because birds of paradise grandfathered it in? 0 power and flying doesn't seem that different from reach to me.

It turns out there is a difference, but as you feel they’re the same hopefully us doing the one more in color pie shouldn’t be a big deal. : )

Alternative Colors for Birds

New 26 Dec 2020 Asked by crazedporcupine 32 Comments

If gilded goose and birds of paradise weren't green, what color(s) would they be? I can't think of any other colors they could be

Green can have creatures that tap for any color of mana. They mostly shouldn’t fly.

Gilded Goose Classification

New 22 Sep 2020 Asked by kerning-pete 70 Comments

Gilded Goose is a mono-green mana dork. Given its color and function, why did y'all make it a bird, requiring it to fly?

It was a top-down design of a Golden Goose.

Understanding Aether Vortex Mechanics

New 08 Mar 2020 Asked by valancedbreakfast 35 Comments

Yet another question about Yet Another Aether Vortex: Can an opponent control the top card of my library? If I draw a card and reveal Gilded Drake on top, when I exchange control, will the drake still be my top card?

The Gilded Drake gets revealed on top of your library. It triggers its “enters the battlefield” effect as it’s now on the battlefield thanks to YAAV. You exchange control between the Drake and a creature controlled by an opponent. They now control the Drake, but it’s still on top of your library. When you draw it, it goes to your hand, leaving the battlefield, and you regain control of it.

Gilded Goose Origin

In development, was gilded goose ever called Birds of Pear-idise

It’s design name was Golden Goose.

Evil Geese Appreciation

New 19 Oct 2019 Asked by clarknes 68 Comments

I must make a counterpoint. The card design for Gilded Goose is excellent, but the fact you have made it a goose is a tragedy. Geese are the greatest evil we have ever seen, sent from the 9th sphere of Phyrexia, to exterminate all life unlike themselves. No question, but geese are evil. (Love the card though)

Green can have evil creatures.

Gilded Goose Appreciation

New 18 Oct 2019 Asked by matahxri 53 Comments

Gilded Goose is my new favourite Magic card because a. it's a powerful one-drop mana accelerant in my favourite colour, 2. it packs a lot of gameplay possibilities into a relatively short and simple textbox and iii. it's a freakin goose. I have no question

Then I will give no answer. : )I am happy so many are enjoying Gilded Goose.

Gilded Goose's Flight

New 05 Oct 2019 Asked by rhonas-the-indomitable-blog 40 Comments

How did Gilded Goose get flying in mono green? Is this a break?

Green gets flying infrequently. Note it’s a 0/2, so it’s mostly defensive and green gets anti-flying defensive things like reach.

Gilded Goose Explanation

New 01 Oct 2019 Asked by deepwyld 37 Comments

I don't understand your comment on Gilded Goose in your article this week: "we really wanted a Golden Goose, which meant we felt it had to repeatedly make Gold counters, which, in turn, meant it was either red or green..." I don't think there are any green cards that make either gold or treasures. Also, can't black repeatedly create gold tokens? I'm not saying a goose feels black, I just don't understand how the gold tokens restricted color to red or green.

Green and red are the top two colors in mana production.

Quality Reprints Request

New 09 Apr 2018 Asked by expensivecashew 40 Comments

In contrast to the previous asker, I love the reprints of very powerful and desired cards in Dominaria! Can I please request this level of quality reprints in future sets, especially cards with high play value at the rare slot such as Gilded Lotus or Siege-Gang Commander,

Dominaria has a higher volume and power level of reprints than most sets, but it is something we want to do at a lower level most of the time.

Treasure vs. Gold

New 01 Sep 2017 Asked by chetskolos 40 Comments

With treasure and gold being different artifact types, treasure become more parasitic than it needs to be. Sub types of past creatures are regulary updated, perhaps updating artifact sub types can be considered? Example update for Gild: Exile target creature. Create a colorless treasure artifact token named Gold. It has "Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool."

Gold tokens don’t have a tap in the activation. Treasure tokens do. They’re not the same thing.

Hybrid Cards Commander Issue

New 16 Jan 2017 Asked by 4blackout 35 Comments

How would I express my disappointment that Hybrid cards aren't working in Commander? I can't play Gilder Bairn in my monoblue deck even though I can in other formats. I know you don't make the rules, but where do I go?

If I was in charge of Commander, hybrid would work in the format like it works in every other format. I am not in charge though so you need to take your concerns to the Commander Committee.

Tezzeret's Ability Bend

New 20 Dec 2016 Asked by damullet 51 Comments

You said Tezzeret's +1 was a bend for blue, but isn't it explicitly already in black thanks to Gild in Theros?

Yes, Gild did it in Black where it was also a bend. Ooh, it’s a bend in both Black and Blue.

Blue Permanents Interaction

New 17 Dec 2016 Asked by tsuyoshikentsu 47 Comments

"Blue doesn’t destroy permanents in the sense that it makes them permanently go away. It can used the word 'destroy' as a mechanical means to aid in transformation." So Blue could Ghost Quarter lands? It could get Gild, but for artifacts? A Blue Chaos Warp would be a bend, not a break? Blue's mechanical weakness is that it's supposed to be reactive--that it has trouble permanently dealing with things in play. How far are you going to stretch the "transmute" excuse to let it do whatever it wants?

Blue can steal permanents.Blue can tap and lock down permanents.Blue can bounce permanents.Blue can and has since the beginning of the game been able to interact with permanents. What it can’t do is destroy them (once again making them permanently go away).I’m not changing anything. I’m explaining how we’ve done Blue for the last 23 years.

Non-creature Tokens

New 07 Mar 2016 Asked by lgosvse 17 Comments

We've had non-creature Artifact tokens before. Born of the Gods/Journey into Nyx had the "Gold" tokens from Gild and King Macar. Magic 2015 had Goblin Kaboomist, who makes artifact tokens. And finally, the Nahiri planeswalker card from Commander 2014 can make an Equipment that is a token.

Okay, I was way off. Populate still doesn’t make any flavor sense duplicating noncreature tokens.

Gold Tokens Clarified

New 29 Feb 2016 Asked by seabutcher 21 Comments

I think the earlier questions about gold tokens refer to the token made by King Macar and Gild, not multicolour tokens.

That’s what I was referring to.

Blue's Polymorph Limit

New 03 Aug 2015 Asked by damullet 13 Comments

Can Blue only polymorph creatures into other creatures, or could Gild have been blue?

Only into other creatures.

Power Level Concerns

New 05 Sep 2014 Asked by zykomike 22 Comments

Mark, Gilded Lotus made me angry! Why can't we just have Black Lotus? So did Ancestral Visions, I prefer Ancestral Recall a bit more.

a) We’ve promised never to print those cards again die to the Reserved List. B) Even if there weren’t a Reserved List, we wouldn’t reprint them because they are crazy overpowered and not appropriate (not even close) to the current power level of the game.
