Blue Serra Angel Reprint

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by badgerbattalion 32 Comments

Hey Maro,If/when functional reprint of Serra angel into blue with a relevant creature type. Just realized now that blue has vigilance and flying.

Been there done that. (Okay, it was Planar Chaos, but we could reprint it.)

Power Creep and Format Change

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by caitsith4 9 Comments

Concerning power creep, there may be a comparison and distinction to be made between distorting a format and adding relevant cards to a format. If a card is relevant, it shows up in decks, right? Maybe even a lot of decks. That's good for a format-relevant product. Otherwise, why even make the product? But then what is the delineating mark between format change (good) and format distortion (bad)? One could argue that Serra Angel is an example of format change. Arguably obsolete, nobody is really objecting to the card's irrelevance in eternal formats.So. What is that dividing line? Is formst chsnge just 'distortion over time'? I would argue that healthful change is oft misperceived as power creep, but it took a lot of cards in Commander before we figured out that '2 MV ramp and repeating value' were the prime culprits in accelerating the casual format beyond its 'battlecruiser Magic' roots.I'm not making a big argument one way or another, just trying to stimulate a brain or two..

For starters you’re not using “power creep” as I use it on this blog, but for the sake of saying the same thing for the tenth time, I understand you mean the increase of cards impacting older environments. You bring up the other thing we haven’t been talking about. Card influx talks in neutral terms. Add N relevant cards and impact the environment a particular amount. The faster you add N, the quicker it changes. The sets designed for older formats aren’t adding in cards neutrally though. They are adding in suites of cards built around particular mechanical themes. Adding in whole suites of cards changes environments more quickly as the threshold to make a deck theme relevant gets hit more quickly. That’s the other big impact of designing for a format. It causes you to impact it faster as you are designing whole swaths of mechanical pieces, not just cards. That’s very relevant to the topic at hand.

Classic Tokens Appreciation

New 31 May 2024 Asked by sapphicvalkyrja 32 Comments

As a Magic old-timer who just finished a "Serra Angel tokens" Commander deck inspired by Historian's Boon and the special Treizeci, Sun of Serra card from Heroes of the Realm that was floating around some months back, I love the Tarmogoyf tokens in the new Jund Commander deck. They're a great way to give a nod to Magic's history, and I hope we see this sort of thing again (though it feels like it could be easy to over-do them so moderation seems best). Please pass on some high-fives for "classic creatures as tokens" idea!

Will do.

Unique Casting Restrictions

New 21 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 5 Comments

With the new Jace getting the Serra Avenger effect of "you cant cast this spell on your first, second, or third turns of the game", could the rules allow for a card that said the inverse? "You can only cast this spell on your first, second, or third turn of the game"

The restriction makes us lower the power level, so the inability to cast it later doesn’t have much reason.

Mono White Power Request

New 08 May 2024 Asked by honor-basquiat 20 Comments

Hi Mark,

Is there anything that is a color pie break about the card Avacyn, Angel of Hope?

If not, can you please make more mono white creatures that have very high power like her. I feel that in Commander, there aren't that many white creatures that are really big threats and win conditions in the form of combat. I want to see more really big white creatures where if you get hit by them just once or twice, it's really back breaking.

I mention this because I notice that when I build mono White decks in Commander, I sometimes have difficulties coming up with combat oriented win conditions that don't involve going wide with tokens or relying on colorless equipment.

So for this reason, can you please make more creatures like Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Serra's Emissary or even Moonshaker Cavalry?

Thank you.

Avacyn’s in color pie. We don’t do a lot of big white creatures, but we can do a few from time to time.

On Future Partner Cards

New 04 May 2024 Asked by sapphicvalkyrja 18 Comments

I know Partner has some issues, but I do hope we continue to see them in small doses. The Vorthos in me can't play them without strong thematic/lore-appropriate pairings. This is especially true of the Commander Legends ones, which feature favorites of mine from the lore that I would love to play, like Sengir, the Dark Baron and Serra, Radiant Archangel

Partner with is still a tool available to us.

Design Question Podcast

New 06 Apr 2024 Asked by kidcincinnati 40 Comments

Would you ever do a podcast specifically on the Black Green Serra Angel question and what you think it communicates about design ability that is worthwhile? I’m a teacher and tutor, I think a lot about question design, and I feel like it has driven so much discussion there might be a cool 30 minutes on the question and the principles behind it.

I can add it to the list. The big question is is there a 30 minute talk about it?

Retro Frame Explanation

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by africanbradpitt-blog 25 Comments

Hi Mark, Thanks for continuously answering questions! It has become my daily routine to your blog. I've two questions regarding the Heroes of the Realm card Treizeci, Sun of Serra. What exactly is a retro frame? Can a card from e.g Onslaught be considered a retro frame card, or are only new, unique cards with an old border considered retro framed? How would you define the card type Legends? Creatures w the subtype Legend or any legendary card? Thank you!

I believe they mean legendary creatures and are using the old term for it, back when legendary was a supertype. I believe retro frame means any card in that frame including old cards originally printed in it.

Keyword for Serra Avenger

New 09 Oct 2023 Asked by crrphoto 44 Comments

Will we ever get a keyword for Serra Avenger? Fo example Preparations X (you cannot play this card before your X’th turn). Seems like the mechanic would work well with all the colors except Red.

It’s not a mechanic that we want to make a lot of cards with, evidenced by the fact that 25,000 cards in we haven’t made more.

Song of All Credits

New 17 May 2023 Asked by sarroth 26 Comments

Did you have any work crafting any of the cards with Song of All in their text box, like the Urza block cards Congregate, Planar Birth, Serra’s Embrace, or the Voice of [ideal] mega cycle? Easily my favorite flavor texts as they were one of the first things I read when I was learning Magic that alluded to the broader lore, and it hooked me.

I had a hand in most of those card’s designs, but didn’t have anything to do with the Song of All flavor text.

Name Change Mechanic

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by marrinara-sauce 29 Comments

Do the rules require that when changing a permanent's name (in the way that Witness Protection does) to an existing card name, it becomes a copy of that card?Like if an effect said "Target creature's name becomes Serra Angel" would it also become a 4/4 angel with flying and vigilance?

I don’t believe changing a name grants those card’s abilities.

Power Creep Prevention

New 22 Dec 2022 Asked by mataleon 25 Comments

Hello Mark! Reading an article on the set “Power Lunch”, it was mentioned that the baseline for creatures was fireball (e.g. Serra Angel was a 4/4 for 3WW). Is there any similar rule of thumb today to keep power creep in check? Thank you and wish you Happy Holidays!

The idea behind “Power Lunch” was the baseline for spells was Ancestral Recall. Note it was never a real product, just humorous musings.

Color Pie Adjustment

New 20 Dec 2022 Asked by solaris-adz 36 Comments

Hello Mark! Now that blue has vigilance consistently, how does this affect Serra Sphinx's place in the color pie? Is it a creature we could see nowadays, or does it have something blue vigilance creatures don'r get? (Like a big body or the fact that ir flies)

Serra Sphinx is now color pie correct.

Serra Planeswalker Gratitude

New 08 Sep 2022 Asked by theinimitablewhimsyfox 27 Comments

Not a question, and I know this is old news, but I just wanted to thank y'all for printing Serra the Benevolent. I had wanted a planeswalker card for her since Lorwyn and the result was exactly what I wanted. She's best friends with Lyra in my angel deck ^_^

I’m happy you’re enjoying it.

Serra Angel Trivia

Invoking the right of birthday trivia, I’d love a tidbit about Serra or the angel tribe in general!

The name Serra came from the word “serrated”. Richard Garfield really liked the idea of a warrior angel and that inspired Serra Angel.Happy Birthday!

Perception of Urza Block Ostracization

New 17 May 2022 Asked by rekian 42 Comments

In a recent poll in Twitter listing top 4 sets in MTG history, Urza’s Saga and block as a whole received a spot in a lot of them, almost on pair with Invasion, Innistrad or Ravnica. Nonetheless, it seems WOTC still ostracizes the block. So, so many memorable cards that helped define so many decks: Carpet of Flowers, Sneak Attack, Show and Tell, Gaea’s Cradle, Serra’s Sanctum, Gilded Drake, Yawgmoth’s Will, Grim Monolith, Crop Rotation, Frantic Search, Replenish, Academy Rector, Opalescence, Yawgmoth’s Bargain, Powder Keg, Rofellos… and I could go on and on. I love that beautiful, relaxed, cartoony artwork too. Any love for Urzas Block here?

How exactly do we “ostracize” Urza’s block?
