Perception of Urza Block Ostracization

New 17 May 2022 Asked by rekian 42 Comments

In a recent poll in Twitter listing top 4 sets in MTG history, Urza’s Saga and block as a whole received a spot in a lot of them, almost on pair with Invasion, Innistrad or Ravnica. Nonetheless, it seems WOTC still ostracizes the block. So, so many memorable cards that helped define so many decks: Carpet of Flowers, Sneak Attack, Show and Tell, Gaea’s Cradle, Serra’s Sanctum, Gilded Drake, Yawgmoth’s Will, Grim Monolith, Crop Rotation, Frantic Search, Replenish, Academy Rector, Opalescence, Yawgmoth’s Bargain, Powder Keg, Rofellos… and I could go on and on. I love that beautiful, relaxed, cartoony artwork too. Any love for Urzas Block here?

How exactly do we “ostracize” Urza’s block?

Perceptions of Silver Border

I keep seeing people say that it's "gatekeeping" to not consider silver border "real magic". But looking at the differences, silver border doesn't fit within the comprehensive rules, rules questions are resolved by statements on your personal blog, there is no sanctioned play, it includes dexterity elements which were long ago explicitly removed from magic, and it has no effect on black border story. I get that people like it, but it is very different from what a lot of people think of as magic.

It’s all a matter of perspective. Commander has rules that don’t exist in most formats. It uses different deck construction guidelines than most other formats. It uses a different starting life. It doesn’t have Wizards oversee its rules. (And by the way, Un-cards have extensive official FAQs.) Cards work differently in it than they do in other formats. It doesn’t have any competitive play. It’s very different than a lot of other Magic. That makes it no less “real”.In life, you can focus on similarities or you can focus on differences. If you focus on differences, you turn things into “others” and you ostracize them. If you look for similarities, you find common ground and you build communities. People who enjoy playing Un-cards are just as much Magic players as those who don’t. Their decks are just as much Magic decks as those that don’t include them. Rolling a die is as real in Unstable as it in AFR. If you exclude others from how you define your hobby because it isn’t how you play, that is exactly gatekeeping. Please be better than that. Think if a time when people did that to you and how bad it felt. Magic is an awesome community because it is so accepting. Be the part that builds up others and makes them feel included, not one tear them down and makes them feel excluded.
