Cancellation of Counters Handling

New 09 Mar 2022 Asked by djscrub 30 Comments

Re: cancellation of +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters, I think the question is more whether you would let a black bordered card play directly with this interaction. Something like a creature with Outlast and Persist. This is a commonly requested type of mix-and-match card that you guys seem to have intentionally avoided. Can I ask if or when?

If. The problem with a set that heavily used both is that it would be very hard to tell board state. At bare minimum, it would require punch out counters to mark them.

Monstrosity Keyword Range

New 18 Nov 2017 Asked by mistershinyobject 17 Comments

Can modular monstrocity only name one-word keywords (lifelink, prowess, undying), or also ones with modifiers, like annihilator 6, swampwalk, protection from everything, cumulative upkeep - add R, outlast W, etc.?

No, it can name any keyword regardless of word length. It just has to have been printed in a creature card.

Abzan Clan Trivia

New 12 Aug 2017 Asked by cryptid-nerd 35 Comments

Hi Mark! Yesterday was my birthday, can I please get some trivia on my favorite Tarkir clan, the Abzan?

To connect the clans to the dragons we gave each an attribute of a dragon. Abzan was shaped by capturing a clan about endurance. Outlast came about because we were trying to figure out how to represent a creature getting stronger over time by focusing on getting stronger over being aggressive. Happy Birthday!

Outlast Mechanic Feedback

New 12 Dec 2016 Asked by zoocalu 26 Comments

So I'm not sure who designed/developed outlast, but I feel like it was super unintuitive, when I first read it, it took like 3-4 try to understand the ability, and every time I read it it got worse. Sorcery speed and summoning sickness killed it.

When we have to chose between how intuitive something is and how good the gameplay is, we err towards good gameplay.

+1/+1 Counters Usage

New 25 Oct 2016 Asked by superfantasticpiratecollection 50 Comments

Could we have a set where giving +1/+1 and/or -1/-1 counters isn't part of a mechanic (fabricate, outlast, renown, support, etc....)?

You mean like the set Shadows over Innistrad? : )

Limited Design Space Mechanics

Can you give some past mechanics that had really small design space?

Cipher is the one that jumps to mind. Outlast is another.

Outlasting Rules Managers

You (Mark Rosewater) seem to be chasing away Rules Managers.

I like to think I outlast them.

Outlast Mechanic Analysis

New 15 Jun 2016 Asked by bcrossfire 18 Comments

Would Outlast have fared better if it allowed you to target any creature you control?

It’s not New World Order and lacks flavor, so I’ll say no, it wouldn’t have fared better.

Outlast Flavor Insight

New 09 Jun 2016 Asked by elmdormesdoram 77 Comments

What's the flavor behind outlast? I don't understand what my creature is doing when it "outlasts".

I like to imagine the creature takes off a turn from attacking to do some cardio and beef up. : )

Keyword Usage

New 02 Apr 2016 Asked by dukkhasatva 21 Comments

Not that I disagree with your decisions, but I think the asker meant why so many keyword abilities use only as a sorcery. Outlast, Unearth, Scavenge, Level Up, Equip, Transfigure,

Those are gameplay decisions. Read my “Choices vs. Options” article.

Bolster vs Outlast

New 01 Mar 2016 Asked by wodar9 25 Comments

Why didn't Bolster have the same Playability problems as Outlast? At the very least Bolster was in Fate Reforged which was played with the problematic "counter"-lords.

Bolster is a rider that can just go on a lot more cards. For example, it can go on spells and creatures.

Ability Speed Rationale

New 13 Oct 2015 Asked by musixmlife 30 Comments

MaRo, why is it that the abilities Level Up and Outlast are only allowed at sorcery speed? They don't seem too strong at instant speed. Is it to weaken control?

Making them instant significantly increases their power level (forcing us to charge more) and lessens meaningful strategic decisions as the correct play is almost always to wait and react in response to threats.

Raid vs Outlast

New 09 Jun 2015 Asked by aaronlovesmtg 25 Comments

Was the real reason you only did Raid and Outlast for one set in Tarkir block because of their low design space?

Raid has lots of design space. Outlast? Not so much.

Secrets in Podcasts

New 15 Apr 2015 Asked by kpestana 37 Comments

Just listened to one of your podcasts from April 2013, "Instants and Sorceries", and you talked about Morph and the importance of not making everything doable at instant speed (Outlast). It's fun to know what you were working on when u recorded.

There is all sorts of secrets hidden within my writing and podcasts. : )

Standard Counter Balance

New 06 Apr 2015 Asked by deetsposts 33 Comments

Can we tone down the number of +1/+1 counters in standard? I know I'm in the minority, but I dislike them. After Undying, then Evolve, Unleash and Scavenge, then Heroic, and now Outlast and Megamorph, I'd really like to be able to play without always pulling out a bag of dice.

We try to ebb and flow the use of +1/+1 counters. They’re very popular and have a lot of design depth and flexibility, but we do have to be careful not to overuse them.

Tarkir Mechanics Synergy

New 27 Mar 2015 Asked by skid723-deactivated20180428 54 Comments

I like how the Tarkir mechanics all kinda work with each other. Exploit gives you Delve fuel. Rebound doubles the Prowess triggers. Casting a card for a dash cost means you'll likely be attacking, which sets up the requirements for Raid. Then the Abazan and Temur is were it falls apart. Outlast kinda lets you control how you bolster. Ferocious and Formidable really are the same thing, different requirements.

Bolster puts +1/+1 counters on you creatures (as does outlast) and both are rewarded by +1/+1 enablers (many of which are outlast creatures).Ferocious and Formidable require the same dedication to creatures and thus can go in the same deck.

Keyword Clarification

New 15 Mar 2015 Asked by kaokun 32 Comments

"Keywords of activated abilities is messy" - you mean like Outlast?

That’s an ability word, not a keyword. Ability words handle it better.EDIT: Apparently outlast ended up a keyword.

Set Space Limitations

New 13 Mar 2015 Asked by aaronlovesmtg 17 Comments

I understand you couldn't have outlast and raid in Fate Reforged for story/ space reasons. But why couldn't you do 50/50 split between outlast/Bolster or Raid/Dash in FTF? That way when drafting Dragon of Tarkir you can still play with Outlast or Raid?

There is just so much space in a small set.

Outlast Design Intent

New 11 Mar 2015 Asked by avatarofbro 25 Comments

Was the "activate only as a sorcery" clause on Outlast an intentional part of its design, to force the player to choose between attacking/blocking and using the ability, or something added by Development for power level reasons?

It was a key part of the design. Remember originally, you used outlast at the time of attacking to specifically demonstrate you were doing it instead of attacking. It got changed because it was confusing knowing what attacked and what used outlast.

White Dash Mechanics

New 08 Mar 2015 Asked by dmofthrones 21 Comments

Would you have considered making white Dash cards in FRF or KTK if the set really needed it, in the vein of blue Exalted, black Outlast, and other mechanics that have bled the pie? Or would that have gone too far?

The overall structure supersedes individual cool card designs.
