Banding in Commander Format

What's your opinion on banding in commander

I’m not sure I understand the question. I’m all for players using cards with banding in the Commander format if they so desire.

Article Request

New 22 May 2024 Asked by elmarcodepico 6 Comments

Hi Mark! After MH3 comes out, I would LOVE to see an article about some of Erik's one-design-for-every-mechanic-ever cards that didn't see print. I'm especially interested in some of the "bad" mechanics - banding, sweep, epic. Any chance we could get an article like that?

A few show up in my card-by-card design articles.

Banding Mechanic Future

New 14 Apr 2024 Asked by delicateturtleangel 19 Comments

Hi Mark!Which is more likely?• Functional banding on attack only• Functional banding on defense only?It could be as small as a single card or as big as keyworded mechanic, and exactly banding or simply a cleaner functional way to say either "If any member of the group becomes blocked by a creature, they all become blocked by that creature", or "when blocking a creature with a group, you assign combat damage" l.

The offensive quality of banding was much better gameplay than the defensive quality. I doubt we’ll bring back a functional replacement, but we’ll make inspired mechanics like enlist.

Banding Mechanic Return

When will banding comeback and was it considered for OTJ.Because being able to band a posse together feels thematic for the set.

Banding has many issues that make its return unlikely.

Storm Scale Discussion

New 21 Feb 2024 Asked by j-waffles 29 Comments

Should it still be called the storm scale when new cards in standard sets occasionally have almost the exact rules text for storm written out on them? Thousand year storm and show of confidence are both cards that were put into standard that either have or grant an ability that is (almost) just storm. I know storm counts any spell and those two cards only see instants and sorceries, but in modern and legacy, storm decks tend to run almost exclusively instants and sorceries, with the only permanent spells being cards that enable them to cast more instants and sorceries. I know inertia is a powerful thing and you almost certainly won’t rename it, but I feel like a better name would be something like “the ante scale” or “banding scale”. What do you think?

Things that are 10 can appear in Standard-legal sets. Die-rolling is the example. So, even if exact Storm showed up in a premier set, I’m not planning to change the name of the scale. Word equity is important.

Ante and Bands Rating

New 16 Feb 2024 Asked by tymessen 36 Comments

Why is Ante a 10 on the stormscale, and not an 11 with Banding with Others? plus, how likely are other 10s on the scale to get reprints like Storm did in Lord of the Rings Holiday box. (i would love to see more banding personally)

11 is a joke answer. Bands with Other is a 10. Die rolling was once a 10 and it got printed in a premier set, so it happens, although very infrequently.

Banding Mechanic's Future

New 30 Jan 2024 Asked by eeveesmane-blog 51 Comments

Banding is my favorite mechanic. Is there a chance we ever see it again in something that is legal in commander/legacy?

I never say never, but it is a longshot. Souvenir T-Shirt from Unhinged for a while had the mechanic “branding” which was exactly banding. We had a few playtests with it, and it made it clear that banding is a hard mechanic to play properly.

Banding's Return Likelihood

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by j-waffles 37 Comments

I know the storm scale is only the measurement for premiere sets, but is banding a bad enough mechanic that we couldn’t ever see it in a supplemental set?

It’s unlikely as almost no one knows how to play it correctly.

Banding Misconception

New 24 Dec 2023 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 49 Comments

As a banding expert, does it ever irk you that people think banding is entirely useless?I find it cool defensively as one of the few anti-trample techs even if I never use it personally

The problem with banding, beyond most players not knowing how it works, is that it’s too good on the defense.

Do you know how banding works?

Better than most.

Nod to Banding

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by dmfmagic 48 Comments

Hello Mark! If/when/already happened: card with an ability that is a very obvious nod to banding for those who know, but won't confuse the general player base?

Already happened. Enlist from Dominaria United was basically a “fixed” banding.

Banding's Future

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by compositeeel 32 Comments

If/when on banding showing up in a supplementary set?

If. It was on Souvenir T-Shirt from Unfinity for a while. The shirt had “branding” which was basically just banding. It got removed for the reason banding is hard to print, it just confuses most players.

Banding And Shadow

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by wtf-oclock 23 Comments

Will the keyword Banding ever come back as a plane mechanic? Also Shadow?

The former is highly unlikely, while the latter is just unlikely.

Banding's Future Return

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by deathpunch4477 22 Comments

Do you think banding could make an eventual comeback in something like a Modern Horizons or Commander set? Or do you still feel sour about banding as a mechanic, even outside of standard sets?

I’m skeptical of banding returning because such a small percentage of players understand how it works.

Green gives the opponent life.

Keyword Complexity Issue

New 24 Nov 2023 Asked by dronerealities 41 Comments

Why come out with a keyword that has 3 different meanings? Keywords are supposed to follow strict logic. You've created something worse than banding with Descent. Descent x, and fathomless Descent. Cards should not have to be researched to be usable.

Would it be better to have three different words? That seems significantly harder to comprehend.

Nature's Blessing Beads

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by chetskolos 28 Comments

Nature's Blessing has only one paper printing and its text is: "{G}{W}: Choose and discard a card from your had to have target creature gain banding, first strike, or trample or get a +1/+1 counter." Since before keyword counter were a thing I used glass beads with 'banding' or the other keywords to mark this change to the creature since this effect lasts indefinitely, and the wording (although cumbersome) does suggest using counters. What do you suggest I do to avoid misrepresenting the card?

Using glass beads is fine. Just be aware they aren’t technically counters for cards that mechanically care about counters.

Evergreen Keywords Removal

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by su92 55 Comments

When we see an evergreen keyword stop being printed, we normally have a replacement (hexproof instead of shroud) or at least something that fills the gap (menace giving evasion to black/red instead of fear, activated indestructible for regeneration). Would you ever just remove something evergreen? Like, something that isn't worth doing anymore, without need for a replacement.

We have in the past. Banding went away and nothing like it became evergreen. I think us doing something today is a little less likely, but not impossible.

Value of Maybe

New 07 Oct 2023 Asked by assemblyofretards 31 Comments

when people ask for a maybe it basically means nothing, right? I could ask for a maybe for banding coming to standard soon, and you could answer 'maybe'

It gives them hope. : )It’s not a promise of anything.

Banding Interest

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by gutsytoe 36 Comments

With Storm cards printed/reprinted for legacy formats why not do the same for Banding? I and I'm sure others would love to see support for it and maybe even a commander that cares about banding.

A Modern Horizons-like set could entertain a banding card.
