Color Schemes in Character Costumes

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by perfectcollectorduck 7 Comments

Have y'all done testing with non Magic players looking at UB characters with iconic existing color schemes in colors that clash with that scheme - Spiderman in black green to use a dramatic and probably out of pie example - and see if the frames confuse them? Do people pick up on it easily?

A character having a costume/outfit that are Magic colors doesn’t make them those colors within the game, so it doesn’t matter if some non-Magic players take time to understand it. Players grasping the color pie is an important early step in the game.

Appreciation for Foundation and Duskmourn

New 28 Jun 2024 Asked by tybonel13 4 Comments

I just saw all the new stuff from the Preview Panel! Could you please give high fives to whoever got the enchantment frame changed for Foundations and whoever got Schemes back for Duskmourn?

Will do.

Archenemy Possibility

New 23 Oct 2023 Asked by tybonel13 58 Comments

Is there any chance of getting Archenemy Schemes alongside Outlaws of Thunder Junction? If MOM as a multiverse set was a great place to bring back Planes, wouldn't a villains set be a great place to bring back Schemes?

I can’t talk about when or where, but the return of Archenemy is a possibility.

Faerie Schemes Feedback

New 11 Sep 2023 Asked by askmaro 21 Comments

I just wanted to leave a note on Faerie Schemes. I’m a primarily cEDH player, but bought it because I wanted a casual deck with a fun theme. It’s by far the best experience I’ve had with a Magic product in the past five years. The typal synergies were nice, but what was really cool was figuring out all the subtle interactions with Hullbreaker Horror and Malleable Impostor. When y’all are making precons, please don’t stop putting in layers of discovery. It makes the experience so much more enjoyable than just playing the obvious strategy (and it makes the decks more powerful too).

Glad you enjoyed it. I’ll pass along the kind words to the team that designed it.

Gatherer Search Issue

New 12 Oct 2022 Asked by furbyfubar 30 Comments

It looks like Gatherer won't let me search for attractions, even if I go to advanced and check the box "Include special items (e.g. Planes, Schemes)" typing in for example "Gallery of Legends" as card name doesn't return any hits. Can you let the correct person know this?

Will do.

Concerns with Reused Color Schemes

New 13 Apr 2022 Asked by doomfisthero 74 Comments

How much of a concern is the idea that reusing the same color schemes as sets cycle might eventually get stale? I've wondered for awhile how big a deal it really is - it just seems like something that would eventually become hard to ignore.

What other options are there? We only have the five colors.

Archenemy Schemes Position

New 08 Feb 2022 Asked by blaze-1013 27 Comments

"Those cards aren’t treated as official Magic cards and thus do not eliminate names as an option for future cards." I'm curious where do to the archenemy schemes fit into this. They are much closer to Magic cards than the stuff from Battle the Horde, but they also aren't really magic cards and while the names weren't stuff you'd use on Magic cards in the past I can totally see some of them being used nowadays and they have some cool names.

I think planes and schemes are treated differently than the Theros PVE stuff.

Insects in Color Schemes

New 11 Aug 2020 Asked by glintfang-nezumi 58 Comments

Creepy crawly nasty insects can still be B and G though, right? I love those aesthetics and they don’t fit white much at all. While I could see golden honey-themed bees (bee people?!) in white, with the very structured hexagonal honeycomb patterning too.

Absolutely.

Casual Format Flexibility

New 02 Nov 2019 Asked by righteousforest 26 Comments

I've noticed that cards like planes, contraptions, and schemes can allow players to break their deck's color pie restrictions, albeit with some luck involved, without the usual high cost (or low efficiency) of colorless artifacts. Is there just more wiggle room in these typically extremely casual formats, or is the inconsistency of an extra deck that can't be easily manipulated part of what makes these "breaks" okay?

Yes, the non-tournament status and higher variance of the mechanics allow more wiggle room.

Blue Characteristics

New 28 Aug 2019 Asked by hedronsifter 54 Comments

"She’s scheming and tricky and loves stealing things. She also systematically works to keep improving her capabilities, whether it’s finding the best sea monster to summon or the most effective gadgets to steal." Whoa whoa whoa! Schemes are a black thing, no? Doesnt trickster feel more at home in red? The love to steal things? I understand take something to study, or to mind control, but just plane ol' blatent thievery?

Scheming and trickery and stealing are all base blue things. Black is more about doing things others won’t and less about elaborate sneaky plans.

Future Products Possibility

New 18 May 2019 Asked by foxandcatadventures 35 Comments

Could we get a product with a fixed set of Planes / Schemes each year?

I think future Planechases/Archenemies are possible, but I’m skeptical it will ever be a yearly thing.

Scheme Plane Border Logic

New 24 Mar 2019 Asked by dalenthas 29 Comments

Do you think whatever color border Conspiracies should've had should also be applied to Archenemy schemes or Planechase planes? Also, what color would you pick if it were up to you?

Schemes and Planes are a different size, so they don’t need a different border.

Artist Squirrel Trivia

New 23 Feb 2018 Asked by yggdrasild49 58 Comments

MaRo, my birthday trivia must have been buried a few times now (it was on the 12th)... Any trivia on the artist Ron Spencer, his relationship with Squirrels (he drew a lot of them back in the days), or the yet-unrevealed schemes of Squirrels in Unstable? Thanks again for everything you're doing : ) 🇫🇷

Magic artists Ron Spencer and Terese Nielsen are brother and sister. Happy Birthday!

Vintage Legality Count

New 25 Jan 2018 Asked by lgosvse 49 Comments

Re: "How many cards are there?" It ultimately depends on what you count as a card. Do Un-cards count? What about 1996 World Champion? What about Planes/Schemes/Phenomena/etc.? What about Richard Garfield's life celebration cards? This makes the question difficult to answer. But a far easier question is "How many cards are currently legal in Vintage?" and the answer to that is 17,198.

Border Rules Clarity

New 24 Sep 2017 Asked by fezzhead 27 Comments

Have supplemental formats like conspiracy, archenemy, and planechase blurred the line between black border and silver border?

Black border cards all work within black border rules. It’s the things like the planes and schemes that are a little more blurring.

Standard and Command Zone

New 05 Sep 2017 Asked by btwofftopic 24 Comments

Would a Standard legal set ever have any interaction with the Command Zone, as conspiracies and Archenemy schemes do? Or is the zone itself limited to supplemental products?

We don’t mention the Command zone by name in rules text on cards in Standard-legal sets.

Banning Conspiracy Cards

New 16 Dec 2016 Asked by dementeddr 35 Comments

Can't wizards just say "All cards with the type 'Conspiracy' are banned in this format"? I don't understand why they have to be listed individually. You don't list Schemes, Planes, or Avatars, why Conspiracies?

The rest are banned by simply not being normal sized cards.

Liliana's Motives

New 17 Oct 2016 Asked by captainnv 34 Comments

Favorite Planeswalker in the Gatewatch: Liliana. She's not a straight-up good guy. She has other motives, other plans, other schemes. Of all of them, she's the most likely to manipulate the Gatewatch into furthering her own agenda. Like pitting the Gatewatch against a demon that has a contract on her soul. As far as who I would like to see join the Gatewatch, probably Ajani. His secondary color is the most flexible and organically he's the most likely to agree with the Gatewatch concept.

Tezzeret and Nicol Bolas

New 31 Aug 2016 Asked by herkles1 42 Comments

Have we seen the last of Tezzeret or Nicol Bolas? I really like both of them and hope that we can see them again. I really do want to see more of Bolas and what schemes that dragon is up to. :)

I don’t think we’ve seen the last of either one.

Gatherer Functionality FYI

New 09 Apr 2016 Asked by cannotwynn 26 Comments

FYI: On Gatherer, if you want to view Planes from Planechase (along with things like Schemes, Phenomena, Vanguards...), there is a checkbox you must click to "Include Special Items". Gatherer by default ignores everything that isn't a regular card.
