Prizes in Non-acorn Attractions

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by tameryourentertainer 4 Comments

I'm interested in why there is only one non-acorn attraction that you can claim a prize from. Was this unintentional or was there a reason?

The cards were designed a ways before the decision to make the ones that could be Eternal legal, Eternal legal, so we just converted what we could. The main criteria at determining Eternal legality was “can it work in the rules?”. The one wrinkle was the Teddy Bear token that was a prize for some Attractions was pink and the rules don’t handle pink as a color. We’d already made the token and were using Water Gun Balloon Game as a promo and it also used the same pink Teddy Bear token which kept us from changing its color.

Building an Unstable-Based Uncube

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by housefullofup 4 Comments

Hi Mark, I'm actually trying to build an uncube with Unstable as a base, but I'm running into an issue. I don't think there's enough contraption assemblers in the set for the size of cube I want to build. I've been thinking of possibly adjusting some of the overcosted assembling cards to be more in line with the power level, or editing some of the unfinity cards that open attractions to make contraptions instead. It seems a bit extreme to go and edit cards with stickers to suit a cube, but I want to avoid having to run multiple of a card or making the cube smaller. What do you think would be the most in-spirit solution for a cube centered on Unstable?

I would run duplicates, but if that is untenable to you, you could run clones, flickering effects, etc. which allow you to reuse the assemblers you have.

Pauper Commander Deck Query

New 24 Jun 2024 Asked by optimizedjank 11 Comments

Hi Mark hope you're doing well, I'm in dire need of an UN set ruling. There are only 8 common attractions and I want to play with an attraction deck in Pauper Commander (of which they are still legal in) but there is not enough to make a full deck. What do I do? Just run 8 or double up on some, or play without one entirely? Many thanks - Xan

Casually, just run eight. Note that this is technically breaking the rules, and other players might object.

Wish Deck Mechanics

New 21 May 2024 Asked by kallixti 7 Comments

If you play with Wish effects in a tournament setting, you have to use an existing resource (sideboard space); you don't get to bring a separate Wish Deck. Do you think it was a mistake that stickers and attractions did not work similarly?

No. The intent was for the stickers and Attractions to not be good enough to play in Legacy tournaments.

Extra Deck Mechanic Odds

With the recent banning of stickers and attractions, do you think there will ever be an extra deck mechanic targeted at competitive constructed?

Anytime in the near future, unlikely.

Praise for Attractions

Hey Mark, for what it's worth, Attractions are one of the coolest things added to Magic in years. I love them and I love my Myra deck!

I’m happy to hear that.

Contraptions and Bans

New 19 May 2024 Asked by themastah 16 Comments

With attractions banned in eternal, is there any hope for assembling contraptions in black border? Contraptions themselves are still black border, and I was really hoping we could see them in a premier set someday.

Attractions getting banned doesn’t help.

Request for Attractions

New 19 May 2024 Asked by tmdoublezero 21 Comments

If you ever make some more attractions in a promo set or something, can I request one or two that do something good on a 1? Knowing that no matter how many attractions I stack there is still a chance they do nothing is kinda off putting for making me want to play with them

The always miss on a 1 and always hit on a 6 was built into Attractions to guarantee that good and bad rolls can happen, and also to simplify figuring out what’s going on.

Stickers and Attractions

New 19 May 2024 Asked by blazinjsin 45 Comments

"Stickers have a lot of logistical issues, but yes, I thought both were mechanically very fun." I'm not personally a fan of stickers, but I have no problem with other people using them. I do however love attractions, and I would love to see more support (contraptions too)

I think there’s a lot of fun design space in extra decks, but I get why it’s a step too far for some players.

Stickers and Attractions

FWIW I liked stickers and attractions, and don't really get why so many people are so angry about them

Stickers have a lot of logistical issues, but yes, I thought both were mechanically very fun.

Sadly, a lot.

Eternal Legality Issues

New 16 May 2024 Asked by anonleoleo 11 Comments

Hi Mark, I've played both Legacy and Commander pretty extensively, so reading the discourse on the recent bans has been interesting. I actually adore attractions in Commander, mostly because it's a fun "extra" mechanic. The fun stops pretty quickly when people are using the goblin as a huge ritual, so I think both sides have validity. Have you guys put any thought into the Eternal legality question? I feel like this isn't the last time something like this will happen.

Once again. I would love to have the ability to put cards in Commander without them being legal in Legacy, but Commander’s legality is currently tied to eternal legality. The group that decides on Commander legality is separate from Wizards.

Lessons/Learn Mechanic Feedback

New 14 May 2024 Asked by notmakingablog71 10 Comments

We're Lessons/ Learn relieved well, and do you think we'll see them again or another similar mechanic? The attractions ban made me consider other pseudo-second deck mechanics.

They were received sort of middle of the road, neither beloved nor behated.

Legacy Mechanics Concerns

New 14 May 2024 Asked by alphedge 18 Comments

The problems with sticker and attractions were extremely predictable and were pointed out by many people as soon as it was announced that they were legacy legal and I hope in future more thought will be put into the logistics of any similar mechanics that may appear in the future

The motive behind the decision was simple. Commander is a casual format, and Un-sets are our most casual product. We wanted players to have access to the cards that worked within the rules. All the wacky stuff was kept opt-in only. The only reason the cards were legal in eternal constructed formats is that’s the legality rule as set up by the people that run Commander. It was never our intent for the cards to be relevant in high-end tournament play. The deck construction rules for stickers and Attractions were designed to be high variance specifically to keep them out of tournaments. At every step in design, we changed mana costs to keep them from being high powered cards. If a card was questionable, we made it acorn. Obviously, we missed on one card. It was a common aimed at limited. That was our mistake. We missed on one card.I would love for there to be a way to have cards legal in Commander without having them be legal in eternal formats. We just aren’t the body that determines Commander legality.

Acorn Cards Stance

New 14 May 2024 Asked by dungeonmasterryan 10 Comments

Mark, is the banning of acorn cards today finally a concession that acorn/un/silver border cards are a mistake?

No. I think it’s important for Magic to keep pushing boundaries and trying new things. Stickers and Attractions were a problem in Legacy constructed events, so we removed them from those events. I have gotten a lot of positive feedback from players who are enjoying the cards in Commander.

Acorn and Legacy Play

New 13 May 2024 Asked by spiritkhan 19 Comments

With today's B&R banning stickers and attractions, do you think there should have been a harder look at what was made acorn or not?

No, I just wish there was a way to make things legal in Commander without them having to be legal in tournament Legacy play.

CR and B&R Changes

New 13 May 2024 Asked by violet-returned 10 Comments

I'm sorry the acorn experiment seemingly failed. Do you think the B&R change will cause stickers and attractions to be removed from the CR?

No, the cards work just fine in the rules. It was an issue of how they interacted with legacy tournament play, not that the rules couldn’t handle them.

Contraption System Complexity

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by minoke5618 23 Comments

Can the rules handle the entire Contraption system and the Riggers needed to make them work? I mean, Attractions seem to work well.

My gut is probably, but the system wasn’t set up to be Eternal-level, so there could be complications I’m not aware of.
