Xerex on the Rabiah Scale

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 2 Comments

Mark, it's my birthday this week, and I'd like to thank y'all for timing Bloomburrow prerelease to nearly occur on my personal day of celebration, a set I have been very jazzed about since it was announced. I really love the possum druid in particular.

For my question though, where is Xerex on the Rabiah scale? I really enjoyed the glimpses of surreal Escher geometries and the alien beings that live there.

Xerex is a 9. “World that’s hard to comprehend” is not an ideal premier setting.

Birthday Celebration

hey mark, it's my birthday today! for my trivia I'd like to ask; what was something special or exciting about your birthday this year??

It was my first birthday party since the pandemic started. My family made crab at home during the pandemic, but it was cool returning to tradition.

100th Expansion Celebration

New 08 Feb 2024 Asked by monowhite-lifegain 36 Comments

Hey mark! I’ve been looking forward to Outlaws of Thunder Junction since it was announced (that name is *the* coolest), but I looked it up and found out it’s the 100th Magic expansion! Is WOTC planning on doing anything special to commemorate that?

What exactly to count as the 100th expansion is a bit tricky. Do you count core sets? If yes, all of them or just ones with new content? Do things like March of the Machine: Aftermath, which was Standard-legal count?

Hi Mark! By the time you've answered this question, you're on the 10000th page of your blogatog (max # of questions per page is 15, and page 9999 is filled up)! So to celebrate, could you please ask yourself a question that has never been asked, and could you please answer it? Cheers!

What was the original name of Blogatog? “Tales from the Pit.” I started it as a place to put my comic.10,000 pages! : )

Citizen vs Soldier Tokens

Why are citizen tokens stronger than soldier tokens?

They aren’t, except when involved in a planet-wide celebration, and then they’re just so excited. : )

Doctor Who Celebration

New 25 Nov 2023 Asked by resting-meme-face 44 Comments

Hello, Mark! After hearing about UB, my greatest wish was to have Doctor Who cards. Well, Thursday was the 60th anniversary of DW, and my husband and I celebrated by playing 4 hours of 1v1 commander with the DW decks. It was perfect. Please thank whoever for helping me make some really special memories by blending two of my deepest interests. I think it really captured what DW and MtG are about. :)

Thanks for sharing. I’ll pass along the kind words to the Doctor Who teams.

Reason Behind Celebration Mechanics

New 11 Oct 2023 Asked by thunderweb 30 Comments

Is there a reason Celebration counts "nonland" permanent only? Could it have been like "If X or more permanents entered the battlefield"?

If we counted land, we’d have to go to three, so then you’d need to play two spells and hit your land drop, which plays worse.

Post Count Milestone

New 03 Oct 2023 Asked by edibleashell 34 Comments

Mark, forgive me if I'm too late, but I noticed you are rather close to your 150,000th post, within twenty or so by my calculations. This might be cause for celebration. If you wanted to celebrate with some trivia about, say, Marchesa, that would be excellent.

I did not realize that. It is exciting.

Art for Adventures

New 17 Sep 2023 Asked by futuristicenemydonut 39 Comments

One thing I think would be really cool on Arena is if there was a separate art for Adventures, so when the Adventure is on the stack, we can see questing druid seeking the beast. Similarly, there could be a dragon art for Goddric when he is in celebration mode. Surely this would be within the rules since non-un-cards can't care about the art?

The larger issue is art resources.

Celebration Mechanic Insight

New 18 Aug 2023 Asked by lebreadbox-blog 14 Comments

Okay I haven't seen much talk of "Celebration" as a mechanic. But it seems to me as a "landfall" style mechanic it has a lot of potential for both power and fun. I have no idea how it plays but I know a lot of players really enjoy free stuff for doing what we were gonna do anyways. Seems nice.

It’s part of the red/white Cinderella draft archetype.

Design Scope Explained

New 16 Aug 2023 Asked by lucidexxd6 37 Comments

Reading a lot of your posts, I think I am understanding that there are certain aspects of a cards design that are not part of what you do that I assumed would be part of the design process for any card. eg templating card text, exact mana costs for a card. What are some aspects of the process of making a card that are within and outside of your scope?

I, and my team, are the architects. We take a blank piece of paper and craft a structure with themes and mechanics. We’re not responsible for the choices of any one card’s design, but rather the bigger picture of what the set is.I’ll use Wilds of Eldraine as an example. Vision design (with help from exploratory design) chose to focus more on fairy tales and make each draft archetype match a fairy tale (of which we chose which ones). We chose to focus more on enchantments and made roles, bargain, and celebration (the latter unkeyworded). We suggested bringing back Adventures (and pitched off-color and on enchantments) and Food tokens. There are some cards we designed that happen to make it to print, but the vast majority of individual cards were made during set design.

Celebration Mechanic

New 16 Aug 2023 Asked by zanthr 20 Comments

Was there any reason Celebration wasn't mentioned in the debut video today? the mechanic shows up on the red-white signpost uncommon that was featured, so it seems odd not to give it a minute of explanation

It’s an ability word found only in red and white.

Father's Day Celebration

Happy Father's Day by the way, Mark!

Thanks. My family saw “Elemental”, ate at a Chicago-style pizza place we like, and had dessert a place with homemade ice cream sandwiches. All in all, a very nice Father’s Day.

Memories of David

New 24 May 2023 Asked by awholecoin 121 Comments

Would you be willing to share a favorite memory of David? Magic related or no?My condolences

David was the best man at my wedding (as I was at his). He talked to me ahead of time to get a sense of what kind of ceremony we are going to have. I told him it wasn’t going to a normal wedding. It was going to be a bit irreverent. We were interested in it to being a celebration of our union, but we wanted it to be more light and fun than the typical wedding. The morning of the ceremony, David says he brought something special to wear to the wedding. He asked me if he could try it on to make sure I was okay with it. He returns in a gorilla costume. : )

100th Expansion Insights

New 05 Mar 2023 Asked by nightmarebc 40 Comments

Has the design of Quilting been influenced by the fact that it's the 100th Expansion? Has that milestone led to selection of the theme? Is there planned to be some celebration of that milestone?

No one even knew it was the 100th expansion until I pointed it out. Even then, it’s pretty subjective how exactly you select the “100th expansion”.
