Bloomburrow Aesthetics and Phoenix Cards

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by necropunk 8 Comments

I love bloomburrow, the cards look very fun but the art style stands out as my favorite part, please let all the artists know they did an incredible job! (No Chandra legendary phoenix though. If a monored legendary phoenix is ever printed, do you expect to see it in a standard set, a commander deck or something else?)

I’ll pass along the compliment. I think a legendary Phoenix could show up in many places.

Excitement for Bloomburrow

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by kwain-itinerant-meddler 1 Comments

Wazzzaaaaap, Mark da Shark,Just wanted to send kudos and share my excitement about so much of Bloomburrow! It's gonna be my first prerelease in a long while, since M20, I think, as well as there's so many things to love about it. I've been a big fan of Doug Beyer since Kaladesh, glad he was the lead designer on this set. Also super pumped to be getting both a revisit to the Heroic mechanic in Valiant, one of my favorite mechanics from Theros, and the amount of rabbit typal support. My Cadira commander deck is gonna go through a major redesign when the set is properly out. Hope you have a lovely day!

I’m glad you’re so excited. I can’t wait to hear all the prerelease stories.

In-Universe Commander Deck Chances

New 22 Jul 2024 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 3 Comments

What are the chances of getting some (i wouldn't want it to be all of them by any means, but some) in-universe commander precons that go all-in on theme and flavor like Universes Beyond precons do, where everything has an appropriate name and gets new art if it doesn't already fit? Something like that for, say, the guilds seems really fun

I won’t say it won’t or can’t happen, but I don ’t expect it to be something we do often with in-universe Commander decks.

Ownership of Commander Decks

Do you own any Commander decks?

Preconstructed? Yes.

Goreclaw Backstory Reveal

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by clownstripedcat 10 Comments

Hiya Mark! Today is my birthday, and I would like to invoke birthday trivia please if that is okay! Is there anything you can share about my favorite woman in all of magic, Goreclaw?

Ethan Fleischer, winner of the second Great Designer Search, has a Commander deck based around Bears. I believe he made Goreclaw for that deck. Happy Birthday!

Planescase and Dr. Who Review

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by gridnack 3 Comments

I like Planeschase but dislike Dr. Who. Mechanically, the Dr. Who product added some fun and interesting cards, but I skipped it because of the IP. How well did it do and is there a chance of getting more in-universe Planeschase?

The feedback on March of the Machine Commander decks and the Doctor Who Commander didn’t have the planechase element listed as high points of the set for players.

Enthusiasm for Bloomburrow Design

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by irlpinkiepie 5 Comments

not a question, just wanted to say that i'm a huge fan of bloomburrow and am now planning on going to my first prerelease in about a decade! the creative team absolutely knocked it out of the park, all the game design i've seen so far is stellar, and i can't wait to brew a finneas commander deck once the whole set is revealed - though i know for sure that my copy of doubling season is gonna be in there~ can't wait to see what else the magic team has in store coming up

I’’m happy you’re so excited.

Commander Card Inclusion Concerns

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by beatsandskies 42 Comments

Hi Maro: I’m definitely disappointed that there won’t be normal Commanders in the Commander decks. If people want a foil or showcase version then isn’t that what the collector boosters are for? I recently picked up the last set of challenger decks for casual play and it’s annoying I need to order another Kappa Tech-Wrecker and normal VOW/MID basics to replace included cards. I absolutely love precons — note my profile pic — and it’d be sad if they became another thing which “isn’t for me”.

The challenge is some players want one thing and some want another and we can only do one thing. As for putting the Commanders in the collector booster, we’ve done extensive polling of the audience for the collector booster and they mostly don’t want the Commander cards in the product.

Names and Game Relevance

New 26 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 5 Comments

A set with modern in the name should not include anything not legal in modern. So realy in order to avoid the problem with modern horizons 3 commander recons you would have to name it “horizons 3” getting rid of the modern from the name.

I disagree with your premise. If premier decks can have Commander decks with cards not legal in Standard, Modern Horizons can have Commander decks not legal in Modern.

Praise for Starter Decks

New 24 Jun 2024 Asked by eredithdriscol 9 Comments

I just want to say I'm a huge fan of the fact that you have starter decks for the Assassin's Creed set. That new players (especially those who like Assassin's Creed, but may not have played Magic before) have somewhere to start that's not a blank slate is awesome. I also think the size of the Beyond Booster set also nicely bridges a gap between commander decks, secret lairs, and tent pole sets. High fives to all involved!

High fives to be applied.

Pauper Commander Deck Query

New 24 Jun 2024 Asked by optimizedjank 11 Comments

Hi Mark hope you're doing well, I'm in dire need of an UN set ruling. There are only 8 common attractions and I want to play with an attraction deck in Pauper Commander (of which they are still legal in) but there is not enough to make a full deck. What do I do? Just run 8 or double up on some, or play without one entirely? Many thanks - Xan

Casually, just run eight. Note that this is technically breaking the rules, and other players might object.

Assassin's Creed Starter Deck

New 24 Jun 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 11 Comments

Why do a starter deck for assassins creed? The starter decks are intended for players just starting out but the assasins creed cards are modern legal so the complexity and power level should be for more advanced players. You didn't do commander decks for this product when they made way more sense than mh3

Beginners can play cards that are Modern legal. : )

Color Balance in UB Set

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by clarknes 7 Comments

If we get future Beyond Booster UB sets will they not need to be color balanced if the IP doesn’t naturally lean towards being color balanced?

It depends on the product it’s in. Commander decks? Sure. A draftable booster product? No, the colors need to be balanced.

Concerns about Commander and Freerunning

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by tybonel13 2 Comments

As someone who primarily plays commander I really dislike how it's been stapled on to Freerunning. Cards don't need to work in every deck. In fact, it feels much more rewarding when you stumble across cards that only work in the deck you're trying to build. Freerunning as an assassin's only thing would've been great. Cool mechanic, cool flavor, fits the IP. Including commander makes it feel forced and too direct. I get commander is the most popular format and you want to cater to it, but this is the absolute worst way to do that in my opinion. Just make cool cards with niche abilities and have them be legendary from time to time.

Assassin typal is pretty narrow. Note how Outlaws of Thunder Junction had to also attach Rogue and Mercenary and Pirates and Warlock to make it mechanically relevant. (There were only 87 Assassins in the game - not counting Changelings - before Assassin’s Creed released.)It just isn’t good game design to make a mechanic (the only new one, no less) one that can only be played in under .1% of decks. But it’s Assassin’s Creed, Assassin’s in the title. It’s the core role of the game. So Corey (the lead design of the set) decided to find additional mechanical space to broaden it. Commander traditionally has trouble with aggression (aka not a lot of Commanders attack regularly) so Corey found a way to make the mechanic relevant in Commander.Even though every Commander deck has a Commander, free running doesn’t push in a way that makes every deck want or need it. I hear the message that some people don’t want us to design cards for Commander, but it’s a 800-pound gorilla that dominates tabletop play. If you go to many game stores, it’s the only pick-up game you can find. So to make our new mechanic (again, the only new mechanic in the whole set) something unplayable in our most popular format isn’t very viable. There is a truism in game design. “You design for the game being played.” You have to understand how your cards will be used by the players and lean into it. There are so many formats you can play that we (mostly) don’t design for, if that’s important to you. Magic is great in that you the player have so much agency in how you play. But we’re going to design for the format that dominates tabletop play.

Appreciation for Sokrates Card Design

New 20 Jun 2024 Asked by vaingloryhunter 36 Comments

Hi Mark. Can you give a high five to whoever designed the Sokrates card? Big fan of only being able to murder him when he starts talking.

If you can find reasons to justify making more cards for historical philosophers, I promise I'll keep making commander decks for them.

Glad you enjoy it.

Four Color Factions Possibility

New 14 Jun 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 10 Comments

Hi Mark! I am here once again to ask when/if four color factions are possible as a minor theme, like in Ikoria, or as a set of commander decks, like Warhammer 40k. We need names for the combos (please c:)!

Us making names, through other means, has a much higher percent chance than us building a set around four-color factions.

Selective Obliteration's Lack of Kindred

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by jimharbor 12 Comments

Why isn't Selective Obliteration a Kindred Sorcery- Eldrazi? Its a colorless Eldrazi flavored card without devoid. I thought for MH3 (and its commander set) the Eldrazi flavor cards would either be devoid or eldrazi . Thank you for asnwering our questions sir.

There are three colorless instants and sorceries with colorless mana costs in the Modern Horizons III Commander decks. One has Kindred Eldrazi (Eldritch Immunity) and the other two (Eldrazi Confluence & Selective Obliteration) don’t, meaning Eldritch Immunity is the outlier, not Selective Obliteration. I’m not sure why one was Kindred and the other two not. It does demonstrate the slippery slope that discourages us from using Kindred often.

Success of Warhammer 40k Decks

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by walker-of-the-yellow-path 19 Comments

Did the Warhammer 40k Universes Beyond decks do well? What's the chance of magic doing another one? Those sets got me way more interested in 40k, and now I'm painting a Drukhari (Dark Elf) Army, so it would be really cool to see some of the other factions the first four decks missed be represented in magic.

The Commander decks did well, so there’s always a chance.

Marvel Products Information

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by zackdes44 2 Comments

What information is publicly available about the Marvel products? All I can find is that there will be Marvel products. Do we know what products (play boosters, commander decks, secret lairs, etc) will be made or a schedule for any of it?

The only news about it is the partnership exists and it will be for multiple sets.

Processors and Scarab God Interaction

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by crazedporcupine 0 Comments

Hey Mark, I just wanted to let you know about my support for processors. I use them in my scarab God commander deck to be able to put creatures I exiled with scarab god's ability back into the graveyard so I can exile them again to get extra copies of a creature.

Processors only allow you to return opponent’s cards in exile to their owner’s graveyard.
