Suggestion for Third Cube

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by a-person-who-asks-questions 12 Comments

Hi Mark! My play group is looking to add a third cube to our weekly rotation. We already have a Vintage Cube and a Pauper Cube everyone enjoys. What do you suggest as a third cube with great replayability?

Un-cube with an Unstable base. : )

Transition to Value Boosters

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by marlarkey01 12 Comments

Hey Mark, why was it decided to remove the draft and set the booster because of confusion amongst them, but putting value booster is better, is supposed to be a support for pauper/pauper commander?

You’re conflating two things that have nothing to do with one another. Draft boosters went away because the majority of the audience preferred set boosters. Play boosters were a way to keep the essence of set boosters while still providing limited play. All of that is mostly centered in local game stores. Value boosters are addressing a need of certain mass market stores to have Magic boosters at a lower price point. They are not a product the vast majority of enfranchised players will ever interact with, and their existence has nothing to do with organized play.

Mark's Relationship with Pauper

Have you ever played much pauper?

I don’t play much constructed (at least with released sets), so no.

Pauper Commander Deck Query

New 24 Jun 2024 Asked by optimizedjank 11 Comments

Hi Mark hope you're doing well, I'm in dire need of an UN set ruling. There are only 8 common attractions and I want to play with an attraction deck in Pauper Commander (of which they are still legal in) but there is not enough to make a full deck. What do I do? Just run 8 or double up on some, or play without one entirely? Many thanks - Xan

Casually, just run eight. Note that this is technically breaking the rules, and other players might object.

Silver Border Problem Explanation

New 19 Jun 2024 Asked by irlnautica 3 Comments

Can you explain how the "silver border problem" differs from format legality? Like, if you can use a Rare card in Pauper because it was at one point printed as a Common, why can't you use a silver border card that's also been printed in black border?

It just creates confusion. Silver border has loudly been not for tournaments for so long, that it would cause arguments.

Ownership Mechanic's Future

New 14 Jun 2024 Asked by enderpryde 4 Comments

The recent pauper 'pre-ban' of Cranial Ram got me thinking about some of the older pre-bans because of Ante that happened in the 90's (RIP Rebirth, Tempest Efreet, and Timmerian Fiends. You will not be missed). Has there ever been any serious discussion about making a newer mechanic that manipulated card 'Ownership'? Where would that sort of effect be on the Storm Scale? (I assume a 12, if it went that high)

I think we’re out of the business of changing ownership. It was the most disliked thing mechanically we’ve ever done.

Popularity of Different Formats

New 29 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 33 Comments

Do you have data on what formats players play? Obviously, we know Commander is far and away the most popular nowadays, but what about Modern being more popular than Standard? Or more less known ones like Legacy or Pauper?

We do have that data. I don’t personally have it in front of me, but it’s something we track. Also, Commander is the most popular played format in tabletop. I believe Standard is still the most popular format played on digital.

MH3 DFC and MDFC Variety

New 28 May 2024 Asked by rowanalpha 61 Comments

When you first previewed MH3 you made a big deal about the inclusion of DFCs. I was hoping that meant we’d get a big variety of MDFCs and TDFCs and - especially as a pauper player - some MDFCs at common. Having just the 5 flipwalkers and 20 mdfc lands is a lot less both in quantity and variety than I thought we might see.

25 is a decent amount, comparative to other DFC sets. I agree the variety is on the low side, but it did do the two most popular executions, the DFC planeswalkers and MDFC lands.

Flagbearer Effects

New 27 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 2 Comments

If/When more Flagbearers or Flagbearer effects? They've been seeing some use in Pauper for their ability to pull potentially game winning kill spells away from their original target.

If. They caused a lot of confusion when they originally appeared.

Card Rarity Concern

New 24 May 2024 Asked by jambrose 2 Comments

Mark, can you pass along the request for a common paper printing of chainer's edict. It's pauper legal form VMA but is only physically printed in uncommon.

I can pass it along. We tend not to put two for ones at common, which makes doing so tricky.

Legendary Common Critique

New 23 May 2024 Asked by duckily 12 Comments

extremely disappointed to see a legendary creature at common in mh3, i hope that mistake is never made again. introducing legendary creatures to pauper would severely compromise part of the formats identity to me

Magic is ever-evolving. Just because something hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean it never should. Also, Homelands which came out in 1995 had two common legendary creatures (Chandler and Joven), so I wouldn’t call this a new thing.

Unfinity Card Legality

New 14 May 2024 Asked by theverdantchef 2 Comments

Regarding sticker/attraction: wouldn't it have been best to keep all the cards from Unfinity silver border/acorn so they don't affect legacy/vintage/pauper and allow the Commander rules committee to decide which if any of these cards to become legal in their format? Or would that have put an undue burden on that rules committee to go through all the cards and figure out which ones would be acceptable and which are not?

If they were silver border they wouldn’t be playable. That rule already existed.

Banning Philosophies

New 14 May 2024 Asked by sobek16 4 Comments

Can’t Wizards automatically ban cards in legacy, vintage, pauper, etc. as a work around to have the cards not effect tournament formats but be legal in Commander?

It’s not something we normally do. We ban cards when they cause a problem, not because they potentially could.

Sticker Appreciation

New 13 May 2024 Asked by mistereff 15 Comments

This one probably won’t make the blog, but let WoTC management know that not everyone hates stickers and bonus decks. I liked brewing with them, and even had a pretty good pauper deck that used stickers.
Today’s ban makes me really sad, and I hope the commander rules committee doesn’t follow suit.

I’ll pass the note along.

Pauper Ban Confusion

New 13 May 2024 Asked by 1for3ban 9 Comments

The ban list article doesn't inform players that stickers are also banned in pauper, you have to read the bottom of Gavin's article to see that.

Stickers, due to the deck construction requirements, have never been legal in pauper.

Possibility of a Pauper Masters Set

New 01 May 2024 Asked by stormcrow13 30 Comments

If/when a Pauper Masters set?And how would you deal with a common only set?

If, because there’s not a way to do a common-only set (from a business perspective). A trading card set requires rarities.

Special Basic Land Cycles

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 96 Comments

I love the new design within the last couple of years of making a special full art basic land cycle for every set. It gives me something relatively cheap to spruce up my decks with, like Dominaria United stained glass BLs in my Sidar Jabari deck, or making my favorite Pauper deck a little more splashy! So much flavor for free!

Glad you’re enjoying it.

Mercadian Masques Praise

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 40 Comments

I know that Mercadian Masques wasn't the most well recieved set, but as a Pauper player, I adore the wealth of interesting designs in the set. I enjoy a sneaky Snuff Out over a Deadly Rolick any day.My (very belated) high fives to all who worked on it!

*Very* belated high five.

All Commons Moving Forward

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by hemg0 39 Comments

Does WotC R&D care about the Pauper format when making commons? Or have the vision to focus more on draft/sealed events?

The plan for premier sets moving forward is all commons.

Unfinity Card Impact

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by zombsidian 33 Comments

How do you feel about an Unfinity card like "Name-Sticker" Goblin becoming a staple in Pauper and other formats?

I feel good about it.
