Old Frame Hybrid Explanation

New 18 May 2024 Asked by rexosaurus 37 Comments

Why does Lavinia, Foil to Conspiracy have a gold ‘97 frame instead of a hybrid ‘97 frame like Deathrite Shaman?

Hybrid didn’t exist at the time of the old frame, so there is debate of what old frame are we supposed to use. Lavinia, Foil to Conspiracy takes a old fashioned sensibility choosing a frame that existed at the time that would have been the most likely frame that would have been used if hybrid existed. Remember in ‘97, all multicolor cards had the same gold frame without any pinlines or hints at what the colors of the card were.Deathrite Shaman applies a modern sensibility choosing to make a new frame that mimics what a modern hybrid frame would look like as an old frame. It comes down to what is the purpose of the old style frames, to capture how it would have been done at the time or mimic what we do now, but with an older aesthetic. Different players want different things.

Creature Type Overlap

New 15 Apr 2024 Asked by pikachugirltits 33 Comments

Can a creature type exist in multiple batches? Could you guys do a spellcaster batch of Cleric, Wizard, Warlock, Shaman, and Druid even though Warlock is already part of the outlaw batch?

A creature is allowed to appear in multiple batches.

Card Frame Preferences

New 21 Feb 2024 Asked by retchgorger 42 Comments

Hey Mark! I want to say I am a huge fan of retro/old frames, I really think it makes cards pop a lot more. Blue decks look and feel blue, black decks look and feel black etc. It is my favorite frame. However, I am not a fan of the old multicolor (or gold) frame, two-color cards all just blend in and lose identity. So I really liked how old frame Deathrite Shaman was done in Ravnica Remastered :D

Deathrite Shaman is a hybrid card and not a gold card. Fun fact: I, and a few other R&D members, tried to change the multicolor frame from gold to the frame now used on hybrid (we liked how it showed colors more clearly on two-color cards). We failed, but mock-ups were made. So when I made hybrid, I pitched using those frames.

Judith's Creature Type

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by interrogatemarcusii 34 Comments

With the type now being available, why was the new Judith made a Shaman and not a Warlock?

I assume it was done to match her creature type from her Ravnica Allegiance card. As a general rule of thumb, we try to keep legendary creature’s creature type the same if there isn’t a story reason for a change.

Hybrid Mana Effects

New 11 Oct 2023 Asked by kaishi101 37 Comments

Does a card/effect with hybrid mana in its cost have access to both of those colors in its effects? if no, would you consider DRS a pie break?

A card with one type of hybrid mana should be something each monocolor can do. Deathrite Shaman is a little bit of a bend, but not a break in either color.

Witches in Game

New 07 Oct 2023 Asked by raindr0psymphony 79 Comments

I want to say, as a witch, that I am hurt by the consideration to remove such things from the game. "Witch" is not a dirty word. However, I suppose the issue is that all the witches in mtg are generally portrayed as evil. That perpetuates the dangerous Christian narrative towards us. I would love to still have witches, druids, and such still in the game as it does represent such beautiful religions. I would like, however, to see more positive portrayals of witches without a doubt. It is okay if you have good and bad, it just shouldn't be all bad. If "priests" can exist in this game, then so can witches, druids, and shamans. Will you take this into serious consideration?

Fear not. We’re not removing Witches from the game. That was a false rumor you heard. And your note about more positive representations is a good one that I’ll pass along.

Preserving Druids

New 30 Sep 2023 Asked by andymontalbon 40 Comments

Please don't phase out druids, I've always enjoyed seeing local Celtic culture/history represented and unlike witches they're not a sinister depiction. If Magic can handle exaggerated fantasy clerics, angels and demons I think we deserve druids alongside them, Christian symbols have already crowded out pagan alternatives in too many places.

Druid is far less of an issue than Shaman.

The former.

Future Class Enchantments

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by cerezawrites 34 Comments

I know Class enchantments were a 4 on the storm scale last time someone asked. If you did them again, would they be based on the creature classes in the game that weren't used in the initial batch (i.e. Samurai, Ninja, Shaman)?

Maybe. : )

Performer in Rakdos

New 13 Jun 2023 Asked by geistfueledscarecrow 59 Comments

Now that Performer is a genuine creature type that appears on eternal legal cards, do you think we could see it in the Rakdos next time we visit Ravnica? I'd fit alot more than Warrior or Shaman like what they get typed normaly.

I hope it gets used.

Green in Pauper

New 01 Jan 2023 Asked by livbrazilian 27 Comments

and about green in pauper, its the least played color right now, because of all the really good board wipes and removals we have, like snuff out, breath weapon and Krark-clan shaman, so we need some more studier one/two drop creatures or better spells that can help the creatures survive the board wipes, even ways to help exile artifacts would help a lot against the most consistent and played deck (affinity), i was sad when i saw that Haywire Mite was not common

The key is figuring out things green could use that are something we would do at common.

Tutors In Standard

New 02 Nov 2022 Asked by lylethebloody 26 Comments

I wanted to ask about something that doesn't seem to jive with what you've said on this blog and on other WotC channels. Fauna Shaman is back in standard, a Black tutor is back... Blue got Solve the Equation shortly ago.... you've been printing quite a few tutors in Standard-Legal sets. I'm not complaining... it just seems odd since you've said that tutors are bad (variance concerns) and that you guys don't like shuffling (which got Yorion banned in a roundabout way). What's changed?

We do make tutors from time to time. I’ve said we’ve shied away from tutor mechanics for repetition of gameplay issues.

EDH Creature Type Request

New 31 Oct 2022 Asked by lylethebloody 60 Comments

Just in time for Halloween and after a week, I have the results of the Great EDH Creature Type Request 2022! Just like last year, I compiled all the votes from the comments of that ask and tallied them up for you! If people voted for more than one tribe, I took their first THREE tribes they listed and did not include any tribes that don't have cards in Magic as I feel that is a different discussion.

As a reminder: The Top 5 last year were...

  1. Myr
T-2. Angels T-2. DwarvesT-4. Beasts T-4. WerewolvesSo.. without further ado... your top tribes that need help in EDH according to the Scientific Fact of your Readers' Opinion are:
  1. Skeletons (7)
2. Shamans (4)3. Spiders (4)T-4. Cats, Dryads, Dwarves, Oozes, Warlocks (3)There seem to be a LOT more diversity in this year's poll compared to last year where the Top 5 concentrated a lot of the vote. 13 tribes each received 2 votes while 32 tribes each got one vote. I don't know why but with Skeletons, Spiders, Oozes, and Warlocks high... it seems people are in the Halloween spirit this year! I'll try to do this again next October.THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN.

FYIThanks for compiling the data.

Appreciation for Reprints

New 31 Oct 2022 Asked by blaze-1013 27 Comments

Can you give a huge hi-five to the team for reprinting some amazing cards in Brothers' War. Not only do we have the retro artifacts, both Fauna Shaman and Diabolic Intent are in the main set. Please keep putting sweet reprints into standard packs.

High fives shall be applied.

Color Pair Assignments

New 18 Aug 2022 Asked by venedrex 123 Comments

Hey Mark, bit of a random/long question, but could I ask you what two-color pair you would put each of the following ten classes into, assuming one color pair for each class: Warriors, Rogues, Wizards, Clerics, Rangers, Knights, Monks, Warlocks, Shamans, and Druids. I've been wrestling with this question for a while and I'm completely stumped, so I figured I'd ask you! Thanks!

Normally we choose our creature types to match the colors, so we have a balanced collection. Your ten skew towards certain colors, but I’m up for a challenge. Assuming we have to use these ten and we’re trying to make it as backwards compatible as possible, here’s my guess:white/blue - Monkblue/black - Rogueblack/red - Warlockred/green - Shamangreen/white - Rangerwhite/black - Clericblue/red - Wizardblack/green - Knightred/white - Warriorgreen/blue - DruidKnight’s the odd fit, but thanks to Throne of Eldraine, there are Knights in all the colors.

Possibility of Multiple Batches

New 04 May 2022 Asked by bordergeist 49 Comments

Could we see a faction set where all of the factions are batches? Like "magic-users" (wizard+shaman+etc.) vs. "fighters" (soldier+warrior+etc.) vs. "celestials" (angels+demons+etc.) vs. ...? Or are we limited to one major batch per set?

Neon Dynasty had two un-named batches in Ninjas and Rogues and Samurai and Warriors. I think the right set could have multiple batches.

Default Magic Classes By Color

Mark, you've talked some about characteristic races. Is there any thought to doing characteristic classes as well? Like soldier in white, wizard in blue, etc.?

There is a default magic casting class for each color:White - ClericBlue - WizardBlack - WarlockRed - ShamanGreen - Druid

Creature Subtype Criteria

New 23 Dec 2021 Asked by fehtc 34 Comments

Could you please give more insight on the criteria for choosing Shaman or Wizard to a creature subtype? I feel theyre pretty similar in mtg world. In real world i feel shamans are more tied to religion/healing.

Wizards have more formal, schooled training.

Context of Mindclaw Shaman's Ability

New 26 Sep 2021 Asked by tempus-vulpes 28 Comments

In regards to Mindclaw Shaman, is it only because it casts from hand that it's a bend? Red has definitely had plenty of access to opponents libraries, e.g Etali. I'd still understand calling it a bend, but a big bend?

Going after cards the opponent has drawn is significantly different than cards they haven’t drawn yet.

Color Pie Justification for Mindclaw Shaman

New 26 Sep 2021 Asked by jules2io 28 Comments

Is mindclaw shaman in color pie?

The ability, casting spells out the opponent’s hand, is primary in blue and black. I’ll call it a big bend in red.
