Possible Card Mechanic and Storyline

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by noahmatthews1399 3 Comments

Hello Mark, I wanted to use my birthday ask to ask if a mechanic like Sole Performer could work in black border? I would also like to request Garruk come back to the story soon

Sole Performer is nowhere close to working in black border. Garruk should return one day. Happy Birthday!

Using Sole Performer Mechanic

When we add {T} using sole performer, where do we add it? I mean, it can’t be to our mana pool because it isn’t mana.

The tap pool. : )

Trivia about Vizzerdrix

New 27 Jun 2024 Asked by hexooze 2 Comments

Hi Mark!
Yesterday is my birthday. May I get trivia among one of my favorite cards - Worldfire, Wurmcoil Engine, Radiant Performer, Sundial of the Infinite, or Vizzerdrix? Or a random card from MH3 not covered by your previous Making Magic articles?

Vizzerdrix got created as a card for a product called Starter. The reason we made it is we had a series of TV commercials, one of which featured Kezzerdrix from Tempest (it involved mixing a wrestler, a chainsaw, and a bunny in a machine). A different ad in the same campaign used an Orgg. So to tie to those, we made a simpler Orgg and Vizzerdrix, as the original cards were too complicated for a beginner product.Happy Belated Birthday!

Rules Vs. Card Ideas

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by krarkrosewater 49 Comments

Hi mark thanks so much for your blog.It must happen sometimes you work on a mechanic or card that everyone understands how its supposed to work and its clear what that card wants to do but the rules of the game cant technically allow for it to work. Can you share an example of something that seems simple but has never been done because of a rules issue?

The best example would be to look at the acorn cards of Unfinity. While a few we’re kept acorn for Legacy concerns, the vast majority of acorn cards simple don’t work in the rules. Performer in Rakdos

New 13 Jun 2023 Asked by geistfueledscarecrow 59 Comments

Now that Performer is a genuine creature type that appears on eternal legal cards, do you think we could see it in the Rakdos next time we visit Ravnica? I'd fit alot more than Warrior or Shaman like what they get typed normaly.

I hope it gets used.

Acorn Card Clarification

New 27 May 2023 Asked by jirachibi2550 25 Comments

So Sole Performer is an Acorn card because of its effect, but could we get something like, for example, "If a Zombie would tap itself for its ability, you can tap this card instead" as an effect thats similar?

I don’t think so.

Rakdos Traits Update

New 04 Feb 2023 Asked by jacebeleren 28 Comments

can any Rakdos creatures from Ravnica get the Clown or Performer types in new prints / errata?

Maybe on a revisit. I’m skeptical we’ll errata anything with Clown or Performer.

Sole Performer Mechanism

New 07 Oct 2022 Asked by hitek1208 26 Comments

"Spending {T} allows you to activate the tap ability of a creature that's already tapped. Normally, you couldn't pay the cost of tapping the creature because it's already tapped. With Sole Performer, you don't have to worry about that. You have {T}!"The way this is worded makes it seem like you can use it to pay for sole performers ability... which seems like a bad thing (from a balance perspective)

Sole Performer’s ability is limited to once per turn.

Sole Performer Acorn Status

New 28 Sep 2022 Asked by felixschweinsteiger 31 Comments

is Sole Performer acorn for balance reasons?

Oh no. It doesn’t come close to working in the rules. It’s a good example of a mechanic that’s much more easily grokable by a human than a computer.

Rules Compatibility

New 26 Sep 2022 Asked by basketofpuppies 35 Comments

I know why it can’t be Eternal, but I really wish that Sole Performer was.

It doesn’t come remotely close to working in the rules. It requires tap symbols having qualities that the rules don’t know what to do with.

Sole Performer Mechanics

New 23 Sep 2022 Asked by swimmerwoad 32 Comments

When Sole Performer adds the tap symbol, does it work like mana would? Would it get doubled by doubling cube? Or is it a seperate pool like energy?

It functions like mana for purposes of clearing, but it is not mana, so it is not doubled.

Partner Ability

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by thestoreman 39 Comments

Hi Mark! Is Ignacio the only card with Partner in Unfinity? I see other mono-color Performers don't have the ability.

There is one rare monocolor cycle with partner. The whole cycle is acorn.

Creature Type Errata Plans

New 30 Jul 2022 Asked by izzet-always-r-versus-u 29 Comments

Will new creature types in Unfinity be errata'd onto existing creatures with that type in their name? Asking for Belligerent Guest, Gluttonous Guest, and Radiant Performer.

There is no current plan to do that.

Future Rakdos Typing

New 30 Jul 2022 Asked by dusqofrakdos 28 Comments

With Performer now being a creature type, is it likely that future Rakdos creatures will have that typing?

I’m not sure how adopted the new Unfinity creature types will be.

Potential of Performer Creature Type

New 25 Jul 2022 Asked by cheesedurian-deactivated2023010 38 Comments

Will we see Performer creature type outside of Un-sets?

All new creature types introduced in Unfinity (and there are a bunch) will be available for use in other sets, but their introduction isn’t a sign that they’ll be universally adopted.

Possibility of Performer Creature Type

New 24 Apr 2022 Asked by doopboopdoop 51 Comments

Could we see a performer creature type?

If we one day make a set built around something like say a circus, we might consider such a thing. : )

Stage Magicians' Color Identity

New 18 Jul 2021 Asked by gleemax 50 Comments

On the note of clowns or a circus set, what colors would stage magicians fall into? and are there any other types of performers with interesting color identities?

Magicians would probably be base blue.

Request for Performers

New 12 Jan 2020 Asked by jeffsachs 43 Comments

May I request more cards depicting performers? Perhaps bard tribal?

You may. I would argue performers are a lot more than just bards.

MTGO Data Concerns

New 11 Jul 2017 Asked by hugetractsoffetchland 38 Comments

I know MTGO isn't really your department but I wanted to give some feedback on the decision to further reduce daily decklist data: it sucks. I read WotC's rationale but, frankly, I don't buy it. Obscuring and massaging the data makes it look like R&D is lying about the metagame because they can't balance it.

The problem is there is always a solved state to any metagame. In the past, the metagame would shifted before it got solved, but with new technology and access to data, it can be solved faster. In addition, there’s a snowballing problem where players look at the data and choose to play the strongest performer only further lessening the variety.

Sets Ahead of Time

New 21 Feb 2017 Asked by akronaaron 43 Comments

Mark, Is it possible that the Kamigawa and Lorwyn blocks were just ahead of their time? Both of these sets have many cards that are strong performers in the Commander format, and I would suspect that both would score much higher now, as players get a bunch of legendary creatures, as well as fantastic tribal and class support with built-in leaders. Is there any set-longevity market research?

Yes, we occasionally ask players about old blocks and neither Lorwyn nor Champions of Kamigawa fare well.
