Nightstalker Nostalgia

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by ginkasai 34 Comments

"I'd say not super high. Let me demonstrate: Have you ever played with a Nightstalker?" I would argue this is a self fulfilling prophecy; the only reason I've never played with a Nightstalker is because you haven't printed one in 24 years!

The issue was: is there nostalgia for Nightstalkers?

Nightstalker Creature Type

Birthday ritual trivia question: Zhalfir and Kaervek returning have brought up some mirage nostalgia, and my favorite lost creature type: Nightstalkers. Are they high enough on the beeble scale that we could actually see them again?

I’d say not super high. Let me demonstrate:

Portal's Setting

New 15 Aug 2023 Asked by lhurgyof-blog 24 Comments

Where does Portal 1/2 take place? I've always thought the human musketeer cards and the nightstalkers were really cool!

Portal 2 was its own location, complete with world building. The first Portal didn’t have a style guide.

Unique Creatures Production Frequency

"1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic.2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe)." Which unique creatures are lower on the scale besides Slivers? And even those are only in supplemental sets at this point. I didn't know those weren't unique to magic, but the point is still the same; you guys seem to produce the more interesting looking and less generic creatures less often.

The original Magic creature types: Aetherborn, Assembly-Worker, Atog, Azra, Beeble, Blinkmoth, Bringer, Brushwagg, Camarid, Cephalid, Eldrazi, Fractal, Graveborn, Homarid, Inkling, Kavu, Kithkin, Kor, Lhurgoyf, Licid, Masticore, Metathran, Myr, Nightstalker, Orgg, Pentavite, Pest, Phelddagrif, Phyrexian, Praetor, Rigger, Saproling, Slith, Sliver, Soltari, Spellshaper, Spike, Surrakar, Tetravite, Thalakos, Triskelavite, Vedalken, Viashino, Volver, and Zubera.A bunch of those have appeared on new cards in the last five years.

Name Length Issue

New 18 Jul 2019 Asked by f1akeofsnow 47 Comments

Hi Maro, has there been a legendary creature or planeswalker that had to have its name changed because it was too long? If so, do you remember who it was and what the change was?

Mirage’s Spirit of the Night was supposed to be Spirit of the Nightstalker, but it didn’t fit and had to be shortened.

Guns in Portal

Good morning mark! Portal, second age has several instances of guns in the artwork. See: Trokin high guard, vengance, alaborn zelot, and prowling nightstalker. Do those count?

We consider Portal: Second Age a failed experiment.

Guns in Game History

New 25 Dec 2015 Asked by porygon-in-space 36 Comments

To those wishing for guns in Magic: There are already a bunch in the game's past. Goblin Sharpshooter, a bunch of Portal Second Age cards (try a Gatherer search for Alaborn), and I'm sure plenty more. There are lots of cannons, both mundane and magical. Heck, there's even Rocket Launcher! Orcs and Goblins particularly have had a bunch tied to them. Magic's tried it out, decided it didn't feel right, and largely moved on. But you can still make a Nightstalker SWAT team deck if you wanna.

Urborg Panther Trivia

New 21 Nov 2015 Asked by infirm-of-purpose 25 Comments

Mr. Rosewater, It's my 29th birthday today and I've been playing Magic since 1998. Can you give me some trivia about my first favorite card, Urborg Panther?

Urborg Panther, Breathstealer and Feral Shadow were all printed as creature type Nightstalker. They come together to form Spirit of the Night. Originally it was Spirit of the Nightstalker but it wouldn’t fit so we had to shorten it. Happy Birthday!

I am currently celebrating my law school graduation. I wonder, could I in honor of this auspicious time get some interesting facts about a card I adore, Spirit of the Night?

The card was supposed to be Spirit of the Nightstalker but the name was too long to fit so we shortened it. Congratulations on the Graduation!
