Third Mirage Expansion?

New 07 Apr 2024 Asked by luvkraft 21 Comments

Hi, Mark.
Is it possible that something like a third expansion will be added to the Mirage block, just like Cold Snap was added to the Ice Age block over time? (since Weatherlight is like episode zero of the Rath cycle) (although I have a feeling Prophecy is the third)

Weatherlight was still the third block of the Mirage block. It does have flanking and phasing cards in it.

Nightstalker Nostalgia

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by ginkasai 34 Comments

"I'd say not super high. Let me demonstrate: Have you ever played with a Nightstalker?" I would argue this is a self fulfilling prophecy; the only reason I've never played with a Nightstalker is because you haven't printed one in 24 years!

The issue was: is there nostalgia for Nightstalkers?

Old Sets Rating Inquiry

MaRo, I'm very curious how Prophecy or Homelands would do on your audience's ten-point scale.

Few would have played it. Both were a long time ago.

Prophecy Token Nature

New 18 Nov 2023 Asked by vereendood 48 Comments

Would a prophecy token (as a set mechanic like blood) be an enchantment or an artifact?

I assume an enchantment token. A prophecy isn’t a tangible object.

Set-Name Cards

New 22 Aug 2023 Asked by melsanoma 31 Comments

Re: upcoming cards-named-after-sets. So far, they have all been specific references. e.g. Mirrodin Besieged(card) is a reference to Mirrodin Besieged(set). Is it possible for there still to be cards that use a set name but aren't related? e.g. Prophecy(set) is not a reference to Prophecy(card). There are still sets with names that could be on a generic card.

R&D seems tickled doing it. I’m sure one day we’ll do a generic reference.

Returning to Ixalan

New 28 Nov 2022 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 64 Comments

How does vision design get players excited to return to the low powered, low complexity bore fest of Ixalan? Or for that matter any weakly or poorly received plane? Are these locations just thrown out with the garbage?

Prophecy and Dominaria took place on the same plane. Flavor of a world and power level are two very different vectors. We can return to a world that players liked the flavor of, without repeating mechanical mistakes.

Fire Prophecy Mechanic Color

New 18 Apr 2022 Asked by lavilledieu 24 Comments

Hi Mark. Back when I started playing magic, Fire Prophecy was in standard. I quite liked that card for being able to put things back in the library. How is this mechanic called, and in which colors is that primary/secondary? Why hasn't this effect been printed in subsequent sets? We see a lot of rummage/loot, but not this.

It’s a variant of rummaging (discard, then draw) which is primary in red.

Art Assignment in Cycles

New 01 Jan 2022 Asked by mysterio797 43 Comments

Hello Mark, and happy new year….I am a fan of cycles you guys do in sets, especially when they are rare/mythic (ex. Praetors, Gods, Gearhulks, and many other rare/mythic cycles you guys have done over the years….wanted to know why art is assigned to different artists instead of one style of art (like when first planeswalkers were depicted by Alexci Briclot or I when Prophecy Avatars were drawn by RK Post?

We make many cycles, and five pieces is a lot for the alloted time, so we can’t always assign every cycle to one artist. We do try to do it where we think it’s most important.

About Fire Prophecy Mechanic

New 23 Dec 2021 Asked by rolscane 34 Comments

Fire Prophecy allows you to put a card from your hand on the bottom of your library to draw a card. Are we looking at a new rummage/loot form that can show up from time to time? Does R&D sees this as more or less powerful than regular rummage/loot?

It’s just a variant. Discarding to graveyard and discarding to bottom of library are pretty similar from a resource standpoint.

Greatest Sales Difference

What has the greatest difference between what it sold and the set before it did?

As a percentage difference? My guess is Prophecy and Invasion.

Prophecy Card Cycle Prospects

New 07 May 2020 Asked by vulkhardmuller 29 Comments

I recently noticed a connection between "Prophecy" from Homelands and "Fire Prophecy" from Ikoria. Do you think we will ever see a full cycle of prophecies using the 'Eye art' format?

There are no current plans for an eye cycle.

Information on Alexi Zephyr Mage

New 14 Mar 2020 Asked by pureferret 38 Comments

Hi mark, it's been over a month since my birthday, and I've been asking almost daily... But I understand these get buried/exiled! Please can I get some belated birthday trivia about Alexi Zephyr Mage and her cloak?

Alexi was part of a rare creature cycle in Prophecy where we made Spellshapers that had bigger effects but required discarding two cards. I don’t have much trivia beyond that. Sorry.Happy Belated Birthday!

Worlds in Sets Correction

New 28 Jan 2020 Asked by nobthehobbit 48 Comments

"[Having] three different worlds in three different sets back to back ... wasn't something we'd ever done before." Yes, you have: Mercadian Masques was set on Mercadia, Nemesis was set on Rath, and Prophecy was set on Dominaria. (Urza Block also featured multiple planes--Dominaria, Phyrexia, Rath and Serra's Realm.)

Good catch.

Design vs. Play Design

New 20 Jan 2020 Asked by 09cathenry1005-blog 108 Comments

You often talk about "good design" and go into great detail on your reasoning. Yet the last few years have been a nonstop parade of bans in Standard, sometimes only weeks after release, getting more and more frequent in Standard. I haven't seen anything like this before and have played since Prophecy. So, why should I believe you have any expertise on "good design" given this track record lately?

That is play design (doing things like balancing the power level of cards). I’m in charge of vision design (doing things like figuring out major themes and mechanics). Most of my design talk is about the work that I am my team do which is vision design.

Nemesis Trivia

New 22 Aug 2019 Asked by jet-set-jaguar 27 Comments

It's my birthday! I was hoping I could get some trivia on one of my favorite sets Nemesis?

Mercadian Masques block is interesting in that each set takes place on a different plane. Mercadisn Masques is set on Mercadia, Nemesis is set on Rath, and Prophecy is set on Dominaria. Nemesis is also the first set to have a second version of a legendary creature (Crovax), but now changed due to the story. Happy Birthday!

Set Name Cards

New 18 Aug 2019 Asked by ultwarrior 28 Comments

Re: Cards with the same name as sets in general, the full list is: Apocalypse, Cold Snap (sort of), Conflux, Conspiracy, Future Sight, Hour of Devastation, Mirrodin Besieged, Morningtide, Onslaught, Planar Chaos, Prophecy, Time Spiral, Visions, Torment and Weatherlight. I know the Time Spiral block ones were named on purpose and I assume Conflux, Mirrodin Besieged and Hour of Devastation were deliberate too. Do you know if any others were?

The rule of thumb is if the set came first, we were did it on purpose. And yes, Time Spiral block was on purpose.

Good Mechanics Bad Set

New 29 Jul 2019 Asked by maddieandherboobs 63 Comments

What would you say is the best example of a good mechanic from a bad set? Does anything from Homelands, Kamigawa or Prophecy hold up?

Ninjitsu from Betrayers of Kamigawa is a good mechanic.

Player-Controlled Cards

New 22 Jul 2019 Asked by rhonas-the-indomitable-blog 31 Comments

I think the prophecy question was specifically asking about "any player may activate this ability" effects like Xantcha, Sleeper Agent. How were those received?

They’ve never been particularly popular. Players prefer that only they can use their cards.
