Trivia on 'Love Song of Night and Day'

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by mistymountainsgay 6 Comments

Before my birthday is over, I would love to invoke my right of trivia!Anything about my favorite part of Magic's world, the Love Song of Night and Day? Or if not, Mirage in general? (I fell in love with Magic when I found my parents' old collection of Mirage and 4th Edition, making me probably the youngest grumpy old magic player to ever shake their fist at these new confangled planeswalker cards)

The Love Song of Night and Day was a poem written by Jenny Scott when she was an editor on Magic. Pieces of it were used on flavor text in Mirage block. I would later read the poem at a wedding at a Magic Grand Prix. We would also eventually making a Saga that referenced it.Happy Birthday!

Captain Sisay Trivia

New 03 Jun 2024 Asked by elmarcodepico 16 Comments

Hi Mark! It's my birthday today! Can I please have some trivia about Captain Sisay? Thank you!

Captain Sisay was the one Weatherlight crew member that Michael and I didn’t create. She and the Weatherlight were created as part of the Mirage story.Happy Birthday!

Third Mirage Expansion?

New 07 Apr 2024 Asked by luvkraft 21 Comments

Hi, Mark.
Is it possible that something like a third expansion will be added to the Mirage block, just like Cold Snap was added to the Ice Age block over time? (since Weatherlight is like episode zero of the Rath cycle) (although I have a feeling Prophecy is the third)

Weatherlight was still the third block of the Mirage block. It does have flanking and phasing cards in it.

Elephant Trivia Request

New 15 Mar 2024 Asked by grosguerrier 33 Comments

Hello Mark! I humbly request the birthday trivia: my favourite PW is Quintorius Kand (hf for your teams btw), have you got any Boros-elephant data related thing for me? Thanks~

The first creature to be printed with the creature type Elephant wasn’t in Alpha (War Mammoth was a Mammoth), but Arabian Nights with War Elephant. The second card printed with the Elephant subtype wasn’t until 1996 (three years in) in Mirage. (There were three: Iron Tusk Elephant, Noble Elephant, and Wild Elephant.)Happy Birthday!

Nightstalker Creature Type

New 13 Mar 2024 Asked by feydruin 48 Comments

Birthday ritual trivia question: Zhalfir and Kaervek returning have brought up some mirage nostalgia, and my favorite lost creature type: Nightstalkers. Are they high enough on the beeble scale that we could actually see them again?

I’d say not super high. Let me demonstrate:

Have you ever played with a Nightstalker?YesNoSee Results

Mana Rock Strength

New 21 Feb 2024 Asked by embergeos 23 Comments

As I was building some commander decks, I realized that the only 2 mana rocks that tap for one color are the diamond cycle from Mirage. Is there a reason we haven't seen a better version of those printed?

Play design feels they’re too strong.

Upside-Down Art Erratum

New 10 Jan 2024 Asked by mistereff 68 Comments

Ok, I gotta know. What was the name of the card with upside-down art you talked about on your Designing To Art podcast? I checked all the burn spells in Mirage, and a bunch of cards with Avens in them, and I couldn’t find a card that matched your description

That’s because I named the wrong set. It was Odyssey, not Mirage. Here’s the card:

Enemy Fetchlands in Standard

Do you think we will ever see the enemy color Mirage fetchlands in Standard?

I never say never, but I’m pretty dubious it will ever happen.

Teferi Lore Trivia

New 19 Dec 2023 Asked by monowhite-lifegain 39 Comments

Hey mark? I think my birthday trivia got lost, I sent it two days ago. I wanted trivia about my favorite Planeswalker, ma boi Teferi.

Teferi first appeared in the Mirage block story. He then played a role in the Urza’s Saga story which took place in the past when Teferi was a young student. He lost his spark in the Mending, leaving an open-ended storyline we didn’t resolve until March of the Machine.Happy Belated Birthday!

Phasing Colors

New 08 Oct 2023 Asked by mistymountainsgay 37 Comments

Is caring about things phasing in or out part of white's color pie? Growing up with mirage, I'd've thought it was blue, but we got that WB card in LOTR and now the War Doctor in WR. Also I think phasing matters is a super cool direction considering the changes to phasing no longer being tied to the old keyword--which I guess is why it's no longer blue.

“Phasing matters” is white and blue.

Favorite Black-Border Art

New 02 Oct 2023 Asked by watdattho 32 Comments

What is your favourite black-border Magic art of all time?

Probably the original Maro by Stuart Griffin (in Mirage).

Favorite Airship Designs

New 11 Sep 2023 Asked by burninggiverwolf 35 Comments

Hi Mark, what are your favourite kind of airships? Classic like The Weatherlight, weird and intricate like in Kaladesh, ragtag and piratical like in Mercadia, or something else?

I have a soft spot for the Weatherlight, which I didn’t create, by the way. The Weatherlight and Sisay were part of the Mirage story.

First Draft Design

New 07 Jul 2023 Asked by mtgerik 32 Comments

Mark, What was the first set designed for draft? some side questions: Was there a version of draft designed for before the 3 pack per person 8 person pod? What did it look like? By which set did you think R&D had really figured out how to design for draft? ( I assume it took a set or two…. Lol) I guess same questions for sealed (6 packs) as well…Thanks,
eric

Mirage was the first set developed for draft. Tempest was the first set designed from the beginning for draft.

Limited Design History

New 01 Jul 2023 Asked by su92 36 Comments

Mirage was the first set to take Limited into account for design, correct? I don't recall the first sets you were involved in, but is it fair to say that most of your time designing Magic has included designing for Limited?

I was on the development team for Mirage. My first design team was Tempest, a year later. My design has all taken limited into account.

Teferi Trivia

New 14 Mar 2023 Asked by automaticclampeachland-deactiva 30 Comments

Birthday trivia! Can I have some obscure trivia on Teferi?

Teferi first appeared in the Mirage story, but he was a planeswalker and at the time we didn’t make cards for planeswalkers, so we referenced him by name in titles and showed him in art, but he didn’t get a card. Years later we were making the Commander 2014 decks and finally found a slot to make a card for him. Happy Birthday!

Ward on Spells

New 08 Feb 2023 Asked by nutsofoden 25 Comments

"if / when instants and sorceries with ward instead of "cant be countered"?" Kaervek's Torch from Mirage has - /As long as Kaervek’s Torch is on the stack, spells that target it cost {2} more to cast./ While not exactly ward this is an example of a spell that taxes the opponent trying to interact with it.

That card predates “can’t be countered” getting put on cards.

First Limited Draft Set

New 05 Feb 2023 Asked by ulrichvonsigwin 29 Comments

Hi Mark, in your opinion which set is the first design to draft?
Thanks.

Mirage was the first Magic set which was developed/balanced with limited in mind.

Phasing's Design Evolution

New 21 Dec 2022 Asked by nadojo1 33 Comments

Just a heads up on your recent storm scale article you have phasing listed as a 9, that's likely because of how phasing used to work. But it has become far more common in design since it's rework.

That’s phasing as a creature ability like it occurred in Mirage (aka here every other turn). The deciduous ability is phasing out. That said, I get the confusion and will change the 9 example in my next Storm Scale article.

Phasing Clarification

New 20 Dec 2022 Asked by basketofpuppies 43 Comments

I thought a recent core set pushed phasing up to deciduous, but your latest storm scale article said it was a nine. Was I mistaken, or did something happen?

Phasing - I disappear and reappear every other turn (aka the mostly creature ability from Mirage block) is a 9.Phasing out - I sort of disappear for a turn is deciduous. I’m going to change the designation in future Storm Scale articles in that difference is subtle.
