Subtype Expectations Issue

New 17 May 2023 Asked by machinepriestexemplar 50 Comments

"There's a big debate if we should use subtypes outside the window of where they are mechanically relevant to allow interactions in eternal formats. That card (Thran Portal) was us dipping our toes in the water and trying it out."Personally, I think this should be done more often! Usually when stuff like that is added, it's expected to have synergy with nearby premier sets (Thran Portal actually made me think gates were going to be mechanically relevant in MOM), but this is only because this was how it's been used in the past. Not only is backwards compatibility one of my favorite things, but having things like this happen more often means the few that are in fact throw forwards for premier sets don't get clocked immediately as hints for what is to come.

The biggest con is it creates expectations that don’t get met.

Gate Subtype Strategy

New 17 May 2023 Asked by zennithgp 50 Comments

Hey, Mark! This may be a bit too early to ask since there's now two years of sets coming to Standard before Thran Portal rotates out, but could you speak about why Thran Portal was given the Gate subtype? It's the only Gate in Standard and plays differently from every other Gate in Eternal formats. Thanks again for all that you do!

Gate Subtype Usage

New 06 Sep 2022 Asked by styx2319 38 Comments

You've stated that you don't use mechanics or subtypes in a set if they don't matter (like printing a card with a landfall ability but not labeling it as such). However, Thran Portal has the Gate subtype. Does this represent a shift in design philosophy or are Gates becoming Deciduous or something like that?

Magic just breaks its own rules from time to time.

Kaldheim Reprints Query

New 26 Aug 2022 Asked by selein 47 Comments

I don't understand why the common snow duals from Kaldheim weren't reprinted for DMU for domain but Thran Portal has the gate subtype. Neither are mechanically relevant but the new DMU duals use up name equity.

You are equating very different things.

Rashmi Trivia

New 11 Oct 2021 Asked by phasesofblue 47 Comments

Hey Maro! It's my birthday today! I was hoping to get some trivia about my favorite commander Rashmi! Thanks for all you do!

Rashmi was the creator of the Planar Portal, so we wanted to capture the sense of her doing wonderful things. I think we were told that she was green/blue and built the card trying to match her flavor in those colors. I think the final card is close to the first attempt at the design (with a bunch of number tweaking).Happy Birthday!

Commander Reprints Request

New 28 Apr 2020 Asked by lazilyimportantnacho 249 Comments

Could we get reprints of erratic portal and some of the other impossible to find cards for commander? I keep seeing reprints of boring, easy to find $1 rares when some of the more exotic and more interesting cards repeatedly get passed over(even if they aren't valuable either tracking them down is a drag)

Make a list of reprints you’d like to see in the comments and I’ll prompt our Commander-focused designers to take a look.

Enchantment Copies Potential

What are the chances we ever get a prototype portal/soul foundry for enchantments?

How many enchantments do you want multiple copies of?That said, maybe. : )

Portal 3 Interest

New 29 Nov 2019 Asked by heshotmeagain 182 Comments

Can we get a portal 3

I’d say you have a better chance getting it from Valve than us. : )(Technically, Portal: Three Kingdoms was Portal 3, but that joke seemed too good to pass up.)

Card Reprint Decisions

New 15 Nov 2019 Asked by juzamsgrin 30 Comments

There are tons and tons of cards with only one printing that most players would like to get more of. The tutors from the Portal sets, Grim Tutor and Goblin Settler from Starter, etc. Is there a reason these have yet to get reprinted, even in a supplementary set?

We have a list of cards we think players want and are always looking for places to put them.

Portal Set Contributions

New 30 Oct 2019 Asked by thertock 32 Comments

The official Wizard's webpages for the sets credit you as a design contributor for both Portal and Portal: Second Age. How much work did you actually get to do on those sets?

Some, not a lot. I designed cards for both sets.

Portal Set Planes Absence

New 29 Oct 2019 Asked by tomasaki19 28 Comments

How come Rabiah is a retroactively conceived plane for Arabian Nights, but the Portal sets don't seem to have a planar identity? I'm asking because it seemed absent from your list of potential revisits.

I didn’t talk about planes from supplemental sets.

Flying Variants Likelihood

Mr. Rosewater, what are the chances of new Flying Variants like Horsemanship from Portal Three Kingdoms?

Low.

Firearms in Magic

New 19 Oct 2019 Asked by ralinski 33 Comments

We've seen primitive firearms in Portal. Are there more planes were primitive firearms (possibly similar to those in the late middle ages) are possible?

We have since opted not to show guns. Tbe most powerful weapon in the game wants to be magic.

White's Card Draw History

New 20 Sep 2019 Asked by originalskaiil 40 Comments

As a matter of trivia, symmetrical draw actually isn't 100% new for white. There are two very old "Truce" cards, one from Portal and one from Homelands, that cause each player to draw two cards or forego drawing to gain life. There's also a monowhite Parley card from Conspiracy which does, strictly speaking, cause each player to draw a card.

The two cards you’re taking about are pre-color pie monitoring. Parley is just an example of slight bends when we cycle mechanics through all five colors. Happily Ever After is the first time we’ve made a conscious decision to make this ability part of white.

Portal Three Kingdoms Plane

New 12 Aug 2019 Asked by meradric 37 Comments

"Portal: Three Kingdoms took place on an unnamed plane that shares a lot with early history China, but is not China." Including the names of a bunch of Chinese historical figures? It seems like a weird choice to insist it was some other multiverse plane that looked so much like Han dynasty China that the people even had the same names.

Both Arabian Nights and Portal: Three Kingdoms borrowed strongly from existing story elements from the source material.

Request for Foil Reprints

New 31 Jul 2019 Asked by metallix87 33 Comments

Hey Mark, can I make a weird request? There are a few old Portal cards that I and others need in foil for Cube. Can you try to push them into a future Horizons or Masters-esque set? The cards are: Omen, Fire Ambush, Three Visits, and Devastation.

I can pass along the info.

Changelings and Planar Portals

New 14 Jul 2019 Asked by cairnwanderer 37 Comments

Couldn't we do what Comics do any use story to explain bigger changes in the future? Like, if we need Changelings in every tribal block, make a story about them escaping through the planar portal and getting scattered on every plane or something.

1) Planar portals are no longer really a thing. The Planar Bridge, the only existing planar portal, can’t transport living materials. Bolas had to raise a zombie army covered in lazotep to use it.2) While changeling is an answer for heaby tribal sets, it’s far from the only answer mechanically.3) Worlds need creative integrity. We try to avoid using things that conflict against the nature of the world.
