Amonket Flamingo Request and Birthday

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by littlethingwithfeathers 4 Comments

Hello Mark! I would like to invoke the rite of Birthday Trivia (a day late) with a request for Amonket, since I was an Ancient Egyptian Mythology kid growing up.

I'd also like to make an animal request... my partners' favorite animals (a duck and ferret respectively) have appeared on cards (Decoy Duck playtest card and Joven's Ferrets), but my favorite animal, the noble flamingo, has to make do with only a sticker as far as I can tell. Can there be a card with a flamingo someday? Even just a reprint of "Uncage the Menagerie" or similar? Or a variety of Aven?

Thank you for all the work you do for us, both on the cards themselves and demystifying and discussing the hobby.

Amonket and a flamingo, got it. They probably won’t be in the same set. : )Happy Birthday!

Vorthos and Casting Cost

New 15 May 2024 Asked by yeen-zone 3 Comments

Un-rules question:If I have a Vorthos, Steward of Myth naming Storm Crow (bear with me here), and a Fist of Suns on the battlefield, can I then cast Mindstorm Crown for 0 mana under the interpretation that it “contains the chosen character in its name”?

A noble attempt, but no. : )Vorthos actually cares it’s referencing the character.

Sliver Queen's Class Identification

New 02 May 2024 Asked by exalted-boda 48 Comments

Why isn’t Sliver Queen a Noble? 🧐

The term “Queen” mirrors the phrase “queen bee” to signify that she birthed the Slivers (at least the ones on Rath), not that she’s a noble in charge of politically overseeing them.

Why Kudo isn't a Noble

Why isn’t Kudo, King Among Bears a noble?

Kudo is not actually a king. It’s a metaphor.

Elephant Trivia Request

New 15 Mar 2024 Asked by grosguerrier 33 Comments

Hello Mark! I humbly request the birthday trivia: my favourite PW is Quintorius Kand (hf for your teams btw), have you got any Boros-elephant data related thing for me? Thanks~

The first creature to be printed with the creature type Elephant wasn’t in Alpha (War Mammoth was a Mammoth), but Arabian Nights with War Elephant. The second card printed with the Elephant subtype wasn’t until 1996 (three years in) in Mirage. (There were three: Iron Tusk Elephant, Noble Elephant, and Wild Elephant.)Happy Birthday!

Frog Flavor Query

New 15 Oct 2023 Asked by dtsanders 39 Comments

Why isn't Cursed Courtier a Frog? I get that the frog aspect is represented by the cursed role token, but it seems to me like it'd be a cool bit of flavor if they were a Human Frog Noble. On a related note, will Bloomburrow have any Frog support? I've been itching to make a Frog Commander deck.

The Cursed aura is the part carrying the Frog flavor. As for Bloomburrow having Frogs? Maybe. : ) Ribbit.

Clown Trait Integration

New 03 Aug 2023 Asked by powroffriendship 31 Comments

If Clowns do make the jump to a non-un- set would older cards like Spike Jester get erratad into them, like what happened with Noble, or is the MtG idea of a 'Clown' the distinct aesthetic of the red nose and make-up kind of idea we see on Pietra that would differentiate them from Rakdos' whole deal?

Clowns would probably have to typally matter in a premier set to have us do errata.

Portal Trilogy Podcast

New 22 Jul 2023 Asked by titania776 19 Comments

Is there enough material to have a lessons learned style podcast on the portal trilogy? They seemed like a product with really noble goals that fell short.

My “Lessons Learned” series are only on products I led or co-led the design for. I had to do something to learn lessons from.

Design vs Competitive Power

New 03 Oct 2022 Asked by onebuckchuck 25 Comments

Hey Mark, does it ever bum you out when a certain card doesn't make the cut in the competitive scene, or doesn't show up in a deck that it was clearly designed for? Thinking of things like Ignoble Hierarch not appearing in Jund, for example.

Power level of individual cards is far outside the realm of my responsibilities. I focus much more on if players like the larger themes, mechanics, and structure of a set.

Challenges in Reprinting

New 05 Sep 2022 Asked by ultimatealphawalker 44 Comments

Are there any older creatures whose updated creature type is too long for those cards to be reprinted off of The List (Such as Ascendant Evincar now being a "Legendary Creature- Phyrexian Vampire Noble", for example)?

I assume there are. If we want to reprint them, we’ll have to get creative. EDIT: The question is referencing The List. Those reprints are straight pick-ups (meaning we just use the exact last printed version), so this isn’t an issue there.

Opposite Personality Creatures

New 20 Jun 2022 Asked by cheesedurian-deactivated2023010 31 Comments

If/When: Creatures that have the opposite personality. For example, a stupid Sphynx, a cowardly Dragon, a smart Beast, a noble Demon. Would they still be in color?

Colors cover a range of possibilities. You can be blue and not be intelligent, for instance.

Card and Lore Inconsistencies

New 22 Apr 2022 Asked by coldersoul-deactivated20230822 44 Comments

Is there a reason Xander got to be a noble but Jetmir didn’t get to be a Druid? His lore mentions being a Druid a few times and if Xander can be incongruous why can’t Jetmir be too?

The lore often gets created after the card set is locked. That’s my best guess what’s going on here.

Updates on Creature Types

New 27 Oct 2021 Asked by j-waffles 80 Comments

In recent years, when you introduce new creature types (dinosaur, phyrexian, noble, etc.) you add that type to a bunch of older cards. In the case of noble it was little more than flavor, but phyrexian being added to glistener elf and blighted agent was a huge blow to infect decks. Is this not an example of major functional errata?

The cards were always Phyrexian in flavor. That was the original intent. We just didn’t have a way to signify it or cards that cared. Once we did, we felt it was important that it matched the original intent.

Errata Request for King Cheetah

May I request King Cheetah to be Errata’d to be a Noble?

I’ll pass along the suggestion, but I’m skeptical he is an actual noble. : )

Reconciling Personality and Mechanical Colors

New 30 Jul 2021 Asked by iamthespineofmybook 28 Comments

Ah, birthday trivia time. How often do you have to reconcile a character's personality colours with their mechanical colours (such as a noble scholarly character (WU) who is also a life-draining vampire (WB)), and do you find it difficult?

When we’re making up the character, we have a lot of control to match them up. When we’re drawing from a real world source, there’s a balance. Usually, you have to get a sense of what component is more key to the card as a whole. Art can help a lot in making something feel right.

Expansion on Class Enchantments

New 04 Jul 2021 Asked by paladin-of-the-small 41 Comments

Regarding the limited flavor space for class enchantments, couldn’t they go beyond what is in d&d for future sets, Magic has several class types, such as knight, noble, zombie etc., and even then you could just make up more based on professions.

I didn’t say there was no space. I said it was limited.

Creature Types Explanation

New 09 Jun 2021 Asked by badatcommander 54 Comments

Since we’ve had some fun with creature types recently, can I ask why Spike Rogue is not a Rogue? And why Noble Elephant is not a Noble?

The reason is simple. Spike Rogue is not a rogue, and Noble Elephant is not a noble.

Sales distribution of Magic cards

New 27 May 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 35 Comments

In the United States of America, what percentage of Magic cards sold do you think are NOT sold in LGS's (i.e. Wal Mart, Target, Amazon, Barnes and Noble)?

Local Game Stores (LGS) and Mass Market Stores are very different things. None of your examples are an LGS, they’re all Mass Market. I don’t have percentages, but I do know a decent chunk of players don’t live within a few hours of an LGS.

Impact of Shrine Updates

New 30 Aug 2020 Asked by gridnack 36 Comments

Re: Shrines. Plenty of creatures receive updates all the time. Just look at Lords which became elves, goblins, and merfolk. Or the new Noble errata. Or how the rules changed walls to function so now they have “Defender”. Artifact creatures became Golems. Why can’t Nantuko Shrine be a Shrine? If it’s because it makes other shrines better, making a lord an elf, functionally improved Elf tribal, no?

Making a non-Shrine a Shrine has a much bigger impact that making a creature an elf. Also true for Locus. : )
