Ward Mechanic Constraints

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by zanthr 3 Comments

Could we see a variant of ward with a cost similar to Gift? i.e. to target this creature, its controller gets the stated reward. Either as a set specific mechanic or just written out

Ward has to be a cost. We can’t do “ward: opponent gets to draw a card” as that isn’t a cost.

Praise for Bloomburrow

Howdy Mark! I'm checking out Bloomburrow Spoilers, and I just want to say, I'm absolutely loving this set, I really enjoy Gift as a mechanic, please tell the Commander precon teams to use it as much as you use ward! Its such a great political mechanic! And I also really like Offspring! The meme of being a mid 30-something and all your friends are having kids is so real, even the Magic cards are having babies! LMAO Cheers,
Dave.

Glad you’re enjoying it.

Gift Mechanic Wording

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by khaoskrtr 2 Comments

I also find the wording of Gift a little strange in that it doesn't explicitly define the "cost" like Ward does. "Gift — Create a 1/1 blue Fish creature token," doesn't sound as nice, I suppose. And maybe that's a good enough reason.

We could have written it more in “Magic-speak”, but we preferred making it sound more like normal English. It mechanically works just fine.

Formatting of 'Gift'

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by kingofyou115 1 Comments

Is there a reason Gift wasn't formatted like Ward to remain a generic keyword? It seems like the kind of keyword that could become evergreen if it wasn't specifically tied to hardcoded options like "Gift a tapped fish." For example:Gift - Draw a card (As you cast this spell, you may choose an opponent. If you do, they draw a card before the rest of this spell's effects.)

We can say Gift a _________ a do whatever gift we like. It’s not very restricting.

Possible Ward Cost Concept

Could "Ward - Gift..." work as a cost?

You giving something to the opponent is a cost, I think. I’m not 100% sure though.

Ward Costs Overview

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by theonetrueqriist 16 Comments

Regarding the hypothetical Ward costs that give opponents an upside instead of directly costing you anything, there's at least one card which does that repeatedly: Wall of Shards has an opponent of your choice gain life as a cumulative upkeep cost. This demonstrates that the game already treats benefiting your opponents as a cost.

Just because a card was printed once that does something doesn’t mean all problems with that thing were solved. Wards have to be costs and another player doing something isn’t a cost.

Rules for Ward Costs

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by planeswalker-umbral 27 Comments

Is there anything in the rules stopping Ward costs that give opponents (ie the controller) something instead of paying a cost? Like "Ward - Each other player draws 2 cards". Or "Ward - Each other player searches for a basic land. It enters tapped and then they shuffle."

Yes. Wards, by definitions, have to be costs.

Design of Brave-Kin Duo

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by silverswordofhope 27 Comments

The recently spoiled Brave-Kin Duo having both a mana cost and a sorcery restriction on its ability seems unnecessarily cautious. Some of my all-time favorite cards are the cheap combat-tricks on a body like Angelic Page, Ghost Warden, Infantry Veteran, Anointer of Champions, etc. Is there a reason we don't see those much anymore? They make for super interesting combat. As they're not really competitively viable cards these days, it would be cool to see a more pushed version (like a 1MV Ghost Warden).Or if it has to have a mana cost, why not a +1/+1 *counter* like a Cenn's Tactician that can target any creature? That would be super fun.

This is a common card designed for limited. The power level is adjusted to that goal.

Insights on Absorb Mechanic Designs

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by mytheralmin 28 Comments

Hello, I heard something interesting about MH3 where you retried EVERY mechanic to see what would work with a new context or be interesting. You (WoTC) revisited many of my favorite mechanics like grandeur but didn't for probably my favorite. That mechanic is absorb, and while it has only been keyworded on one card "Lymph Sliver" it did see a continuation on my favorite card of all "Valkmira, Protector's Shield" alongside what would only a few sets later become ward. I wanted to know if you could share any insights on the designs taken with absorb or any other of your favorite mechanics? Thank you very much for your time.

I designed Lymph Sliver and absorb. If I remember correctly, I was riffing off of a shield mechanic from the Star Wars TCG. (It was a trading card game design lead by Richard Garfield that I was on the initial design team for.)

Card Text Change

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 4 Comments

I'm so happy that "When Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward enters the battlefield" will now just be "When this card enters". It saves SO much space in card text and cleans up (IMO) Magic text boxes a fair bit. Can I ask what finally made the change happen? Also, why didn't the two changes (ETB and "Card Name") happen at the same time?

In templating, there often is a conflict between clarity and brevity. Also, we more often tend to take changes slowly as it’s easier if they’re more incremental.

Sharazad Card Interpretation

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 7 Comments

Why is sharazad a sorcery instead of a creature with an ETB and Ward cost both of which make you play sub games when the latter is more accurate to her lore.

Enter the battlefield effects didn’t exist when Arabian Nights was published.

Considering 3/2 Power in MKM

New 19 Jun 2024 Asked by shmittywerbenjagermanjensen 2 Comments

I was thinking about a blog from Ari Lax about 3/2 being the best power and toughness for limited and was wondering if you all considered or tested with disguise/cloak from MKM making 3/2s rather than 2/2s with ward?

The initial version of Disguise in vision design of Murders at Karlov Manor made them 3/2. It was a bit too aggressive.

Disguise and Ward Interactions

New 18 Jun 2024 Asked by bigbantbeast 0 Comments

Hi, Mark! Do you think letting Disguise use Ward {1} for its face-down creatures may have also led to greater game play and still letting players unmask their creatures? From what I've heard Gavin say about Ward, Ward {2} is good, but can be tough to interact with, especially when faced against multiple creatures. Plus, paying {3} for a 2/2 with Ward {1} is very aesthetically pleasing to me.

I think we need to be careful where we use Ward 2 in general, but I don’t think disguise is where it’s caused problems.

Infinity Concept in Gameplay

New 14 Jun 2024 Asked by moonsliceman 15 Comments

Countably infinite does NOT mean finite. If you shuffled an infinite number of Clown tokens into your library, you would never draw another kind of card in that game. Infinity plus however many cards were in your library is still infinity. Imagine if you didn't shuffle. How many cards would be on top of the first real card? Infinite cards are on top, so you'd never draw the card. If you shuffled the deck, that would still be the case. There would be an infinite number of Clown tokens before and after each real card, because the chance of getting a Clown token between any two cards while shuffling is 100%. Not 99%, not 99.999...%, just 100%. Infinity divided by the cards in your library is infinity. You can never draw any real cards, because even if you took off the top card, infinity minus one is still infinity.Grenzo, Dungeon Warden would always hit, since there are an infinite number of Clown creature token cards on the bottom of your library. Since tokens have 0 mana value, you can't cascade into any real cards. You could mill out if you got hit by Tasha's Hideous Laughter. If you chose Land for Abundant Harvest, you would get one if you had a land in your library. However, if you got hit by Cut Your Losses, you would only mill Clown tokens, and no cards from your library. Infinity plus the number of real cards in your library divided in half is infinity, so you'd never get to the first real card, and you'd still have an infinite number of Clown tokens on top. Finally, if you happened to play Braingeyser with X equal to infinity, you would STILL not draw any real cards. Infinity minus infinity is infinity. You would have an infinite number of Clown tokens in your hand, and an infinite number of Clown tokens on top of your library. It's easier if you think of infinity as a description or a quality rather than a number. Treating it like a number infects whatever math you're doing with odd-looking results.

Birthday Creature Choice

New 25 May 2024 Asked by standtoarms 5 Comments

Dear Sir, It appears I've happened fortuitously to visit your blog on your birthday. Felicitations! In honour of the occasion, you have been granted the Devour Food ability until the next time it becomes Day. However, you may also need to pay Cumulative Upkeep. My question: what is your favourite creature whose power and toughness as numerals together form your new age?

I’ll say Ancient Greenwarden. I enjoy both Elementals and doubling things.

Mana-Based Ward Shift

New 15 May 2024 Asked by nightfiremelody 4 Comments

I may be misremembering, but I feel like you mentioned in the past that mana-based Ward costs would be for White, Blue, and Green, whereas life, discard, and sacrifice-based Ward costs would be for Black and Red. However, we've recently seen Gisa, the Hellraise as a mono-black card with a mana-based Ward cost. Did I completely fabricate this rule, or has design shifted?

That’s where we started. We found mana-based ward just plays better, so we now allow black and red access to it when necessary for play balance reasons.
