Determining Limited Archetypes Numbers

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by su92 3 Comments

I don't know if this is fit for a regular article, a podcast or a Nuts and Bolts, but I'm very curious to know about how you determine numbers/as-fan for Limited archetypes, especially A+B stuff. Like, why did WOE's WU have many tap triggers while OTJ's GU only had one explicit plot-matters card? Why did the tap triggers were all at uncommon but other themes usually have at least one common trigger? I understand it's a feel and testing thing mostly, but any effort to put it into words would be appreciated. :)

The short version is every theme is different and we endlessly playtest to get a sense of the appropriate as-fan. Maybe I can turn that into a whole column or podcast. Not sure.

Dream Job

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 11 Comments

I had a Maro dream once. You'd hire me on if I completed a scavenger hunt quest around Seattle. I had to find and take pictures of various land marks such as Pike Place but it was closed that day. Then somehow we rode a mono rail over the bay and you gave me until the end of the ride to design 5 Commons for an upcoming set, but your critique was I designed rares. :(

Thanks for sharing.

Untap Symbol and Q

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by thoughts-of-the-transience 18 Comments

Hi Mark, I was listening to your podcast episode on the alphabet in magic, and you say something along the lines of "I can't quite remember why we used Q for the untap symbol". If you still don't know, could it be that Q in English is almost guaranteed to be followed by a U, which is what you most likely would have used if it was not already used by Uncommon and Blue?

I think it most looked like the circle of the tap symbol.

Potential Second Set for Bloomburrow

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by strymon 18 Comments

I’m very excited for Duskmourn, but I wish that Bloomburrow had received a second set to further develop its setting. It’s clear that the set was so packed that things were left out. For example, it would have been nice if the types received explicit support at common in both of its colors rather than just the one. I do get that part of the point was to have a looser typal structure for greater flexibility, and I definitely love that choice compared to say XLN. I suppose 1/4 of all commons (20/86) referring to a particular type would have been too much?

If a setting is successful, we can return. It’s risky to stay on an untested world for two sets.

Impact of Increased Uncommon Cards

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by simicmimic 6 Comments

Since sets now have more uncommons than commons, are there some cards printed at uncommon that might have previously been common?

Yes. Threaten (temporary creature stealing in red) effects are now uncommon, as an example.

Distributing Card Rarity Per Set

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by inketc 6 Comments

How does the team decide how many rares and mythics or just overall cards each color gets from set to set?

Colors are always balanced in common and uncommon, and often rare. Mythic rare is the only rarity where there’s usually never a totally even split.

Uncommon Signposts Naming

Hi Mark! What led to all the uncommon signposts being named "mentors" unlike uncommon signposts in other sets?

The world building.

Future of Hybrid Commons

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by trainmastergt 13 Comments

Hi Mark!
With Karlov Manor and Bloomburrow, we’ve now seen two cycles of common creature cards that can be played with Hybrid mana in sets that otherwise don’t have a major hybrid theme. Does this mean that we’re going to see an increase in the number of hybrid commons in the future?

Common hybrid cards have proven to be a valuable tool in helping to raise as-fan of certain themes for limited, so I do think we’ll see it used again.

Hybrid Commons Goal in Bloomburrow

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 6 Comments

What was the goal behind the hybrid commons in bloomburrow? This set doesn't seem to have either the strong multicolor focus or the strong monocolor focus that tends to necessitate that kind of thing in limited

It gets the as-fan of creature types up.

Understanding Value Booster

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by kuldothaphoenix 31 Comments

People aren't understanding what a value booster is- it's a low price point impulse buy for grocery stores or pharmacies or toy aisles, not a thing that card shops (usually) would actively stock. These are more in the vein of "saved my treat money from lunch to buy boosters on the way home from school" or "was picking up prescriptions and decided to buy a pack instead of my usual candy bar. Opened a $4 uncommon!", not "cracked a case of these at the LGS"

Correct.

Changeling Role in Typal Sets

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by tevans-living-life 40 Comments

Does Bloomburrow prove that a typal-themed set doesn’t need changeling to work? Or will Changeling stick around for typal sets with heavier creature type emphasis?

The as-fan of typal themes is a lot lower than sets like Lorwyn or Ixalan. “Here’s a snippet from my article today that touches upon this:To give you a sense of what I mean by a sprinkling, here are the typal rewards for Frogs:
  • A common that costs less if you have a Frog
  • An uncommon sorcery with a rider if you have a Frog
  • An uncommon land with an effect that helps Frogs
  • An uncommon land and a rare creature that cares if a Frog entered the battlefield this turn
  • An uncommon creature and a rare creature that grant Frogs an ability
  • A rare creature that cares about casting Frogs
The number of typal cards can vary slightly, but that will give you a rough idea of the as-fan I’m talking about.”Here’s a link to the whole article:

Issues in Play Boosters

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by guardmanxl 23 Comments

Mark, I play a lot of limited and one thing I've noticed with the new play boosters is that it is no longer guaranteed to have a card of every color in it. This is especially glaring in a set like MKM or MH3 with multicolored commons. In MH3 especially, since there are no colorless commons, I've opened several packs where it is missing a color and the only cards in my other color are multicolored, meaning I basically don't get a 1st pick. Is this a known problem? Is anything being done about it?

The collation only allows us to guarantee four colors and not five.

Pack Card Order Standardization

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by macrochelys 4 Comments

May I request that more effort be done to standardize the order of cards in a pack? I understand that different printers may have different requirements but it really hurts the enjoyment of opening packs when I can't tell which end has the commons and which has the rare.

It’s a much harder request than you might imagine due to the number of printers we use.

Disparity in Spirit Guide Rarity

Why is Simian Spirit Guide printed at common but Elvish Spirit Guide uncommon?

The Planar Chaos timeshifted sheet did some wonky things to rarities.

Critique on Teaser Decisions

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 6 Comments

Hey mark, I wanted to say that I thought it was an odd decision to have your teaser include stuff that has already been spoiled (the cycle of uncommon lands that each reference four creature types)

There are a lot of moving parts to a preview season. I try my best to not hint at things already known, but sometimes it doesn’t work out.

Support for Limited Archetypes

New 19 Jun 2024 Asked by ryder052 7 Comments

Hey Mark! What percentage of Commons needs to clearly support *some* limited archetype?

It depends what you mean by “support”. Playable in at least one archetype, ideally multiple? All of them.

Nontoken Army Creature

if or when, nontoken army creature?btw I love all these new modern horizons commons! The designs are very cool and they make my melvin brain happy. Please give everyone involved in the design of Warped Tusker 3.75/3.5 high fives

If. We’re planning to keep it tied to Amass right now. High fives shall be applied.

Errata Excitement for Kenessos Deck

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by light-bender 21 Comments

Hi Mark,I've seen that some people are upset about the whole cephalid are octopus errata but as someone who plays a Kenessos deck I am pretty excited! "Sea creatures" are 4 pretty uncommon types so it's rare I get any fun pieces for that deck, this errata brought a lot of new (old) cards into the fold that I am excited to play. Bonus points the flavor is still perfect! So it seems like a great choice to me, please pass along many high fives.

Will do.

Impact of Play Boosters

New 07 Jun 2024 Asked by battle-of-wits 20 Comments

Does the fact that play boosters have the opportunity for more rares impact what cards you print at rare and mythic for limited purposes? One of the MKM packs I opened for a draft recently had 4 different blue rares in it.

We’re designing sets such that common and uncommon have more answers to the rares and mythic rares.

Snow-Covered Wastes rarity and precedent

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by czechasociallife 12 Comments

Why is the Snow-Covered Wastes an uncommon and is that a precedent for the future?

I don’t think anything in a Modern Horizons set is a precedent, except maybe for a future Modern Horizons set.
