Exile-Trigerring Cards

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by shadowstar91 1 Comments

abzanhouseguest asked about cards that trigger off things being exiled. We already have a few! The War Doctor being probably the strongest example. A couple Eldrazi too. It's a very rare thing but you've done it before.

Fine point.

Eldrazi Card and Colourless Devotion

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by temporarynameiwillchange 2 Comments

Could an eldrazi card care about devotion to colourless?

We don’t tend to print many cards with colorless costs, and when we do we use less colorless mana symbols, so affinity for colorless isn’t set up well.

Xerex's Storytelling Potential

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by 1953943 6 Comments

The fact that Xerex is beyond comprehension could be an asset for storytelling. That’s the kind of place that’s ideal for an escape story or a story about finding an important objective that’s hidden there. As far as mechanics go, that’s a bit tougher. I could see it overlapping with the flavor of the Eldrazi.

It could work in print where the player can imagine the setting. It has a lot more problems when we have to draw art showing what it looks like.

Potential Future Set Tutoring

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by archfiend487-blog 5 Comments

RE: Previous set TutorHas Wizards ever planned to do a card that would tutor a card in an upcoming set (not yet released)?

We’ve done numerous cards that reference unprinted (at the time) cards in rules text. None that tutor come to mind. Here’s the closest I could think of: (no Eldrazi card had been printed yet)

Cosmic Horror Typing Considerations

Was there ever any consideration to re-type Cosmic Horror as an Eldrazi?

Not that I know of.

Colorless Philosophy

New 28 May 2024 Asked by shiggymegamitiggy 0 Comments

Had a listen to the "Color Speaks" series while driving this weekend. It was really interesting insight. While colorless is not a color, is it possible to get a "Colorless Speaks"? Colorless does have representation on the Council of Colors and there's some kind of philosophy behind the actions of Karn, Ugin, and the Eldrazi.

Colorless does not have a philosophy.

Repurposing Wasteland Planes

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by cursedereaper 56 Comments

With omenpaths being a thing could previously depopulated wasteland planes (maybe through Eldrazi attacks) be repopulated? Maybe similar to how Karn made Mirrodin but with a base instead of creating it out of this air made from metal?

It’s possible.

Colorless Cards Discussion

New 28 Oct 2023 Asked by goldgaridelve 46 Comments

Mark, I know colorless isn't a color, but have you done a DTW on the different non-artifact colorless cards and how you make them distinct (if WOTC even does)? Just thinking of the colorless lessons from Strixhaven versus the feel of colorless Eldrazi cards. Or designing for what feels right for an Ugin card versus a Karn planeswalker.

I can stick it on the “short” list.

Colorless Flavor Identity

New 14 Mar 2023 Asked by captainjackharness 39 Comments

I loved your Council oof Colors series, but I was confused about the colorless one. It was brought up that there's no flavor identity to being colorless, but Urgin, Karn, and the Eldrazi all prove that's incorrect. There's a lot of flavor there! Is there enough for a full podcast on the flavor of colorless, maybe? Or maybe the history of it in the game?

Colorlessness doesn’t have philosophical connotations. Cards end up in colorlessness more for mechanical reasons.

Order of Colors Question

New 22 Sep 2022 Asked by ultimatealphawalker 38 Comments

Why does opening ceremony put “C” after “WUBRG” when colorless cards like Eldrazi or Karn come before white cards in set order? Shouldn’t the order be the more pronounceable “CWUBRG”?

It’s just something we do so infrequently, that I don’t think we have a set order.

Colorless Philosophy

New 22 Sep 2018 Asked by bad-witch-alert-deactivated2021 48 Comments

I know colorless isn't a color, but what does colorlessness mean philosophically? There's colorless characters within the story, like Karn; it's not reserved for mindless automatons like thopters and forces of nature like the Eldrazi.

Colorlessness doesn’t have a philosophy. That doesn’t mean colorless characters can’t individually have one.

Nissa vs Eldrazi

New 08 May 2018 Asked by nedistro 65 Comments

If Greens' ultimate goal is "acceptance of the natural order", then why would Nissa interfere with the Eldrazi on Zendikar? Shouldn't she accept their natural purpose is to consume and remake as they see fit?

They weren’t supposed to be imprisoned there. Their existence there wasn’t natural.

Emrakul Pronoun Explanation

New 21 May 2016 Asked by choppenstantz 59 Comments

Sorry, my question was more about Emrakul than Karn; I was just trying to see if the two cases were similar. Isn't calling Emrakul "she" something the titan herself hasn't provoked, but rather just an easier label for those referring to her? I know there are differences - Eldrazi don't have the same sapience required to correct someone or have an issue - but ultimately it seems like both characters are in the same boat where they have no gender, but do have a pronoun others use for convenience?

Emrakul is a very different case than Karn. The Titans spurned “gods” loosely based on them. The God associated with Emrakul was female. The actual Titans are so far removed from anything fathomable, that I’m not sure what gender for them actually means.

Color Pie Philosophy

New 21 Dec 2015 Asked by false---prophet 48 Comments

I love the color pie. However I feel that the gameplay of magic did not quite reflect the philosophy of each color. For example, running a green ramp deck needs a mindset of "I will take a few hit from the faster deck, but later you will be in trouble ", but in philosophy green wants acceptance which does not match the mindset. Could we have a set that focus on the philosophy of colors? Perhaps when we get to know the origin of colored mana the next time we revisit the eldrazi?

Acceptance of the natural order which is exactly what you just described. “If can survive the initial onslaught and give nature time to do its thing, I’ll win.”

Planeswalkers' Knowledge

New 02 Nov 2015 Asked by tibalt-the-aggressively-costed 40 Comments

Hey Mark, I really love the direction that magic is going in. I sincerely love that magic can address an old threat that was left unresolved such as the eldrazi Titans, and yet introduce new conflict such as the disappearance of Nahiri. My question is this. Are most planeswalkers aware of New Phyrexia? I understand that Koth is there, and Venser is of course dead. But is Karn warning people to stay away, did Elspeth even tell her good friend Ajani?

A question for Doug. I don’t think a lot of planeswalkers know about the Phyrexians let alone Mirrodin.

Colorless Basic Land

New 05 Nov 2013 Asked by misterbunni 17 Comments

It's there any chance for a colorless basic land? I know it's very narrow in its purpose (colorless commander aka Karn/eldrazi), but I thought I'd ask.

Go to our site and search for “Whatever Happened to Barry’s Land?”. That’s the tale of the colorless producing basic land.

Embracing Psychographics

New 02 Nov 2013 Asked by solune44-blog 14 Comments

Mark, thank you. I've read your articles about the psychographics and i recognized that i'm a timmy, power gamer. So, i decide to fully embrace my destiny, i built up Karn Tron in modern yesterday. Wahoo, this is FUN. Thank you for helping me understand why i play magic and what i want my deck to make me feel. Karn rules ! Well, Eldrazi rule too !

One of the reasons I’ve been very vocal about the psychographics (well, other than being transparent in how we do things) is to let players understand that they play for different reasons and that it’s okay. Make Magic the game you want it to be. That’s one of its greatest strengths.
