Color with Most Free Spells

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by zombsidian 4 Comments

Is there any color that flavorfully gets more access to more "free" spells?

Blue, by a little (if you count making other spells “free”). We don’t do a lot of “free” spells.

Reveal Your Hand Mechanic

New 25 Jun 2024 Asked by polluxr 4 Comments

If/when more "reveal your hand" as a cost/additional cost like Land Grant? It feels like a neat design space . (All for it being used as additional cost over more free spells though)

Probably when, but it has issues. We generally like hidden information and it isn’t that much of a cost to pay.

Power Level of Free Spells

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by xansor 32 Comments

If/when: getting a new cycle of potentially free spells (by exiling a card from hand) that are equal or above the power level of the "force" cycle?

If. That’s a high power level.

Changing Card Templates Over Time

New 08 Feb 2024 Asked by j-waffles 27 Comments

How come cards like the “will” cycle from commander legends or the free spell cycle from commander 2020 say “if you control a commander” and not “if you control your commander”. The VAST majority of the time these are the same thing, so I’m curious why it was decided to have them be worded the way that they are

Sometimes templates change over time.

Resource Denial Views

New 27 Jan 2024 Asked by canondwarf-blog 36 Comments

Hi Mark,I'm a long time fan of Smokestack, when will we get another effect like this?It seems like R&D is ok with printing pushed free spells and interaction, but is afraid of resource denial. Thanks,

Resource denial is wildly unpopular, so we have to be very careful with designs for it.

Costing Dangers Compared

What would you say is the most dangerous effect to get costed wrong? Mana reduction/free spells or card tutoring?

The former.

Mercadian Masques Evaluation

New 10 Oct 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 66 Comments

You have said that R&D made Mercadian Masque a "weak" block, but its a block with free spells, rebel, Brainstorm, spell shapers, if it was printed into Standard today it would probably be the most dominant set being played. How in R&D's eyes was the block made "weaker"?

It was significantly weaker than Urza’s Saga Block. : )

Chronomancy Trivia

New 29 Nov 2022 Asked by tempus-vulpes 47 Comments

Hi Mark! My birthday was this past Saturday, and as per the rite of Birthday trivia, I would like to ask about any trivia pertaining to Chronomancy or Chronurgy (Time Magic) as it relates Magic the Gathering, or, failing that, some trivia on my favored counterspell "Rewind". Thanks!

In Urza’s Saga, I made the “free mechanic” as an alternative to doing cantrips. (At the time, we weren’t allowed to have them in every set.) Rewind was me applying the mechanic to a counterspell. The “free mechanic” would prove to be horribly broken, but it appears there’s one case where it’s not - reactive spells (things you can’t just cast whenever you want, but only do it in reaction to something specific happening). So Rewind turned out to be a free spell we can reprint.
Happy Birthday!

Design Space Limits

New 01 Aug 2022 Asked by natew000 22 Comments

Thinking about cards like Simian Spirit Guide and Faerie Macabre, do you think there is much useful design space in effects where the cost is “Discard this card” or “Exile this card from your hand,” with no additional costs?

They are basically free spells, so there’s a limited amount of design space (that doesn’t have play design issues).

Black Boarder Dice Rolling

New 19 Aug 2021 Asked by prathin 37 Comments

Mark, I played my dice rolling deck and activated my Wizard’s Spellbook rolling a 20 and casting two free spells, triggering Faridah for a card, Brazen Dwarf for damage, and Feywild Trickster for a dragon. All on a single roll of the dice! That being said, I would like to request more black boarder dice rolling for my commander deck to really get it rolling.

I’m game to try. : )

Power Level of Free Spells

New 24 Jun 2021 Asked by k0olmini 55 Comments

Hey Mark!I've noticed a certain trend in Modern Horizon's 1 and 2. The "free" spells clearly have blue at the best and red at the worse. Blue seems to get access to what it usually does, Force of Negation is negate and Subtlety is sort of like Hinder. Yet for red it seems like design if VERY careful to not give red direct damage. Force of Rage, two 3/1's that die at end step and Fury only hits players. I think it is pretty obvious that red is being severely bottlenecked on its power level for free spells and blue continues to be the 'best' color, why is that?

Because defensive spells are much less dangerous as free spells then offensive spells.

Commander 2020 Decks Sales Performance

New 14 Mar 2021 Asked by arcadesuperturbo 49 Comments

Hi, Mark. Did the Commander 2020 decks sold well for the line? Now that we’re close to the Strixhaven Commander 2021 decks I’m wondering if the concept of pairing the decks with a set’s theme worked well for sales (beyond the free spell cycle).

The Ikoria experiment, tying Commander decks to a product, worked very well.

Issues with Phyrexian Mana

New 21 Nov 2020 Asked by su92 39 Comments

What would you say was phyrexian mana's greatest issue? Circumventing the color pie? Or allowing free spells?

The free spell part was probably the bigger problem. The color pie part was also a problem, but only an issue on a few cards.

Examples of Vision Design Mistakes

New 03 May 2020 Asked by 22bebo 116 Comments

Can you give an example of what you would consider to be mistakes made by vision design?

A lot of these are technically early design as they predate vision design.“Free spells”Odyssey being too Spike-yKamigawa block making all rare creatures legendary. Lorwyn being race tribal and Morningtide being class tribalShadowmoor shifting tribal colors.Eventide shifting to enemy hybrid.Battle for Zendikar focusing too much on the war.Kaladesh not removing opponent’s energy.Amonkhet being overstuffed.Ixalan not having tribal glue.

White's Mechanical Space from Blue

New 02 May 2020 Asked by lookingupanddown 20 Comments

Some of the relatively newer mechanics in Red (rummaging, polymorph, free spells off the top of the library) are either shared with or derived from Blue. White currently has this with card filtering. What I'm asking is, could we get more White mechanical space from Blue?

We prioritize getting things that make sense for a color over where we get it from.

Design vs Development

New 31 Oct 2019 Asked by tbjanowski 28 Comments

Beautiful design can be undermined with development by over pushing or over costing cards. Is the opposit true that poor design can not be fixed with great devoplment?

Bad design can be unbalanceable. For example, making certain free spells (from Urza’s Saga block) could make them more powerful,

Balancing Mechanics

New 03 Sep 2019 Asked by silentone2k 37 Comments

"For example “free spells” can be made stronger by raising the mana cost." I'm sorry, I feel like I missed a piece to follow what you're saying here.

I was taking about how not every mechanic can be balanced. As an example, I talked about a mechanic from Urza’s Saga block that had the odd quality that raising the mana cost could make the card more powerful.

Balance and Resource Intensity

New 03 Sep 2019 Asked by tbjanowski 27 Comments

You said "don' t confuse power level of execution with the mechanic itself" that could be applied to affinity, dredge, delve, pitch spells, storm etc. I believe any mechanic can be made playable to current standard(name any format) power level, its the time and effort needed for development to make it work. I believe it is possible to make standard playable moxen and other power cards. Would you say the time and efforts to balance these effects are resource intensive to be worth it?

Not every mechanic can be balanced. For example “free spells” can be made stronger by raising the mana cost.

Red vs Blue Traits

New 17 Apr 2018 Asked by keith-cancel 45 Comments

I find interesting you say red and blue have the least mechanical overlap. Both like to mess with the stack, both like spells, both like to use artifacts. Blue has card draw, red has impulsive draw. Blue has mind control effects, red has act treason effects. When it comes to filtering blue has draw then discard and red has discard then draw. Both have a form of free spells Cloud of Faeries vs Priest of Urabrask. I just thought of those quickly too.

I said the least, not none.

Comparing Free Spells

New 04 Mar 2017 Asked by neito 46 Comments

Which "Free" spells do you think are less broken, the Alliances ones (like Force of Will) or the Urza's ones (like Rewind)?

The Pitch spells (the nickname for the Alliances’ cards) are less broken than the Free spells from Urza’s Saga. Less is the optimal word. : )
