Handling Discard and Counterspell Mechanics

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by zopandrel 15 Comments

from what you said to a previous asker, if I recall, you and the team try to be cautious about discard, and also counterspell to some extent because of how both mecanic are "feel bad" overall. Why not making more card that, don't per say straight up negate, but at least react to those type of effect, like that one baloth that, if I'm not mistaken, come into the board if an enemy effect would make you discard it ? Are those considered too polarizing or difficult to balance or make interesting ?

The problem solving it with a response is that you then only solve the problem for a) the people that own the card (even at common, the majority of players will never own it), and b) the more advanced players who understand that this is an answer to a problem and use it accordingly.

Counter Terminology

New 31 Dec 2023 Asked by mattgmueller 21 Comments

Hi Mark, you wrote an article defining hard and soft counters, is that terminology still accurate today? Or should Negate be classified as a hard counter?

It’s still accurate.

Art and Flavor Focus

New 29 Mar 2023 Asked by wynnecluster 29 Comments

Might be outside your area of expertise, but figured I'd give it a shot:The art and flavor text for Negate in MOM both reference Ajani being cured, but in the story both Ajani and Nissa were cured. Do you know why only one of them is highlighted here?

Because a card has one image, so it was focused on that specific event.

Green Counter Creatures

New 14 Jan 2023 Asked by darkangelzero 29 Comments

Could green get "counter" creatures based on power? Basically pay x and tap negate spell with lesser mana cost than this cards power? (Like a creature fighting against magic using its fist)

No, that’s not something green can do.

Standard Counterspell Variety

New 16 Oct 2022 Asked by gmzombie007 51 Comments

Mark more of a statement and a request. We need less new counter spells per standard. It's ok to reprint things like cancel, negate and essence scatter. I know you just reprinted them but I mean in another current set. We don't need 10-20 different counter spells in standard. It's ok to have 1-3 new counterspells per current standard rotation. You don't need 10-20 it's to much.

Is there a Standard permission deck filled with all the different counterspells? Why is having 20-ish problematic in Standard?

Power Level of Free Spells

New 24 Jun 2021 Asked by k0olmini 55 Comments

Hey Mark!I've noticed a certain trend in Modern Horizon's 1 and 2. The "free" spells clearly have blue at the best and red at the worse. Blue seems to get access to what it usually does, Force of Negation is negate and Subtlety is sort of like Hinder. Yet for red it seems like design if VERY careful to not give red direct damage. Force of Rage, two 3/1's that die at end step and Fury only hits players. I think it is pretty obvious that red is being severely bottlenecked on its power level for free spells and blue continues to be the 'best' color, why is that?

Because defensive spells are much less dangerous as free spells then offensive spells.

Bolas' Red Traits

New 18 Nov 2019 Asked by lits57-blog 61 Comments

You answered a question earlier about which parts of Nicol Bolas' personality were red-aligned; you mentioned that sometimes let his emotions sway him more than they should and that he was a dragon. While being a dragon does sound like a pretty good deal, the other trait sure sounds like purely downside. What aspects of Bolas' red-side are beneficial? Has being partly red-aligned helped him with this plans?

Being upside or downside doesn’t negate something being part of you.

Alara and Tarkir Returns

New 13 Nov 2019 Asked by deliriousspine 47 Comments

Does a return to Alara negate the chances of returning to Tarkir as long as the Return to Alara set is in Standard?

They wouldn’t be right next to each other, but other than that, no.

Green Murder Impact

New 26 Oct 2019 Asked by nezumibloodeyes 18 Comments

Does that fact that, say, Negate couldn't counter a "green murder" make it harder or easier to put in without a break?

No impact either way.

Adventure Mechanic Clarified

New 04 Sep 2019 Asked by bostonsportsfan86 15 Comments

So how does adventure work with cards like negate that reference non-creature spells? Love the set so far!

If you cast the adventure it’s either an instant or sorcery depending on what the card is.

Reasons for Randomness

New 03 Sep 2019 Asked by tbjanowski 26 Comments

While full deck tutoring is at a low, the impulae tutors eventally just combine and create a new issue, if I use Narset Parter of Veils and Vivian, Chapion of the Wild 2 times I will have a good idea the bottom 3rd of my deck putingbthem rangomly on the bottom doesnt negate that. Thats only reducing any advantage average players get while pro's are able to use that information to a significant advantage. So why keep it random?

We keep it random so players don’t have to exert a lot of mental energy for something that will seldom matter in gameplay.

Tasty Card Humor

If Negate and Shock aren't deciduous cards, are they at least delicious cards?

Once again - don’t eat the delicious cards!

Deciduous Card Definition

New 14 Jul 2019 Asked by blood-fish-god 23 Comments

Would you say cards like negate and shock are “deciduous cards”, where they may not appear in most sets, but its very likely to be in any given standard format?

I would use a different word because that’s not true of most deciduous things.

Negate's Evergreen Status

New 13 Jul 2019 Asked by todayshighlights 22 Comments

Is it fair to call Negate an evergreen card? If so what other cards would you call evergreen?

I would choose a different word as there really aren’t spells that appear (almost) every set.

Counter Terms Distinct

New 09 Jul 2019 Asked by boltedmonkeyman-deactivated2023 39 Comments

Why is the whole counter (negate) vs counter (+1/+1) thing a concern at all? It would be good practice not to have conflicting terms, but I don't really see how these terms could ever cause confusion. They have drastically different contexts, almost never appear on the same card together, and the word "counter" intuitively describes each mechanic to any English-speaker. Has someone really asked you, "Does Negate give +1/+1 to my Lightning Bolt?"

One of the reasons we haven’t changed it is the terms have very different contextual uses. In general, it’s better not having one vocabulary word mean two different things though.

Proliferate Tweaked

New 01 Apr 2019 Asked by darkfox190 43 Comments

Acknowledging that Proliferate has been tweaked, can we get the reason why it was tweaked?

R&D is always on the lookout for ways to make cleaner, more straight-forward mechanics. This makes mechanics easier to process in tabletop and lessens the amounts of clicks on digital. When we decided to bring back proliferate, we realized we could make a simple change that would both, on average, make the mechanic more powerful and clean it up for digital. Previously if a player or creature had more than one counter, you the owner of the proliferating source chose which one of the different counters to duplicate. This new version doesn’t make you chose, but instead duplicates all of them. Remember, you still choose which players and/or permanents to proliferate.Yes, there’s a tiny scenario where you have to chose between duplicating both a positive and a negative counter, but that’s far less likely than the scenario where you have two different types of counters you want to duplicate (especially on creatures as +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters negate one another).

Artifact Lands and Historic

Do artifact lands count for historic? Or does being a land negate it?

Artifact lands (and legendary lands) are historic but you don’t cast them.

Red's Enchantment Dilemma

New 13 Feb 2018 Asked by vgglasses 151 Comments

Someone brought up what seems to be a very good question about red’s lack of answers to enchantments. Blue can’t conventionally answer anything that’s already on the board, but can bounce + counterspell. Green is supposed to focus on using its creatures, but said creatures can have abilities that negate having to answer certain threats. Why not introduce a circuitous or expensive method by which red can maybe answer enchantments without undercutting its weakness to it?

Enchantments go away when the opponent reaches 0 life. Red’s good at that. : )

World Design Fears

New 21 Jun 2017 Asked by markusleben 70 Comments

I think the fear people have of a 'world of hats' is reasonable, even if it's misplaced. They're worried that using some sort of theme in a world makes it impossible to reuse the world with different themes or the theme with different worlds. I feel like Kaladesh giving us a new kind of artifact world is good evidence of a world using a theme again, and New Phyrexia is a good example of revisiting a world with a different theme, but I also think respecting and addressing that fear is important.

Fair point. Our goal is to make worlds that are both deep and defined. One though does not negate the other. Also, the primary lens that we show worlds is through a card set and the nature of that forces us to highlight more focused aspects of that world.Because we’ve moved to a system where we return to many worlds, that allows us the opportunity to show different facets. The new design model will also allow us to remain on a world and shift focus.

Gatewatch Sunburn Curiosity

New 22 Apr 2017 Asked by spytefull-deactivated20181218 46 Comments

The double suns on Amonkhet has got me wondering, how easily do the Gatewatch sunburn? I'm especially curious about our favourite fair-skinned ginger, Chandra. Does her tenancy to be on fire negate the sun's ability to burn her?

I do know she doesn’t burn easily. : )
