Clamfolk Lore for D&D Conversion

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by bill-cipher-official 8 Comments

Mr Mark, what is the lore / biology of the Clamfolk? I would really like to know, due to wanting to make a Clamfolk race in D&D 5e.

There isn’t much established lore save a few pieces of flavor text. Some Clamfolk live in Clamville. One Clamfolk village got shelled. There are Clamfolk musicians who play “Duke of Pearl”. There are Clamfolk rebels.

Creature Type Updates

New 19 May 2024 Asked by planeswalker-umbral 21 Comments

Its been over 15 years since the grand creature type update. Is there plans to do a smaller scale version to update old creature types? Like making Frontline Rebel a Rebel finally? Or Witch Engine a Phyrexian? Or combine older types like Aurochs and Oxen?

There are no current plans to do another Grand Creature Type Update.

Outlaws Mechanic Trivia

New 17 May 2024 Asked by zendikon-sage 63 Comments

Hi Mark,It’s my birthday and me and my friends are going to play some OTJ sealed today. In honor of this, can I get some trivia on Outlaws, my favorite mechanic to come out of the set?

We made a list for Outlaw of any creature type that might make sense:
  • Assassin
  • Barbarian
  • Berserker
  • Minion
  • Mercenary
  • Ninja
  • Pirate
  • Rebel
  • Rogue
  • Warlock
Assassin and Rogue felt like automatic includes. We added Mercenary because we wanted the “henchperson” token to be a Mercenary. The creative team asked us to add Warlock because we needed to have an outlaw spellcaster to hit all the card concepts. That’s what we handed over to set design. When making a batch, we do between two and five, with three being optimal. Four seemed in a good spot and allowed set design to add something if they had to. They added Pirate because of all the Pirate cards in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. We did talk through many of the others. We considered bringing Minion back instead of doing Mercenary (we stopped doing it a while ago). We talked a lot about Ninja. In the end though, we felt this collection best served the mechanic.Happy Birthday!

Myr Alignment

New 17 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 36 Comments

Do Myrs truly have an alignment? I know they were built by Memnarch, but after that they kinda just hung out like lil robot goblins, until the Phyrexians, where they were... active dissedents? But other than some cards it just seems like they were just useful creatures for the Rebels to utilize.

The Myr work for whoever will allow them to be useful.

Rebel Support Possibilities

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by sapphicvalkyrja 32 Comments

Lin Sivvi holds a special place in my heart from my Type II days in high school. If/when on Rebel support that isn't as token-focused as what we saw in ONE, so it plays better with Masques-era Rebels? I'm hanging on to that 30th anniversary printing of her in the hopes of building a Commander deck for her someday

We’ve talked numerous times of using Rebel again. With the right set, I think we will.

Warlock as Outlaw

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by mysticleviathan 60 Comments

Why warlock as outlaw? I feel like rebel fits the theme way better. All the other creature types make sense, but warlock seems completely out of place to me…

We needed the flexibility to make any card an outlaw, so that meant we had to cover a wide spread of creative options to give the creative team the flexibility to concept any card. They needed a spell caster, and warlock was the best choice for an outlaw spell caster, so it became part of the batch.

Set Roster Decisions

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by yeckit-blog 60 Comments

Loving things so far but a couple of questions, why weren't Ninjas considered outlaws and was clash considered for this set? The latter seems like it would fit flavor as a standoff with the higher cost being who drew and shot quicker.

Repeated batches, meaning things we use on multiple cards in the same set, are normally restricted between two and five items, with three being the sweet spot. We needed Rogues and Warlocks to hit all the creative executions we wanted. Mercenary was needed because that was our henchperson token. We also knew Assassin’s Creed with its Assassin typal theme was coming. We turned those four in when we handed off from vision, leaving one potential space open so set design could add something if needed. That something was Pirate due to all the ones added by The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. As I show in today’s article, we considered all the following:AssassinBarbarianBerserkerMinionMercenaryNinjaPirateRebelRogueWarlockThere just wasn’t room for all of them. Also, we prioritized what would be in the set. So some things, like Ninja, didn’t make the cut.As for clash, it’s just wasn’t popular enough when we first did it to bring it back.

Santa's Red Aspect

New 26 Dec 2023 Asked by cookiebomba-blog 61 Comments

White makes sense but what makes Santa red?

You need to watch the TV special “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town”, the origin story of Santa. He’s a rule breaker and a rebel, doing things his way despite what the authority says.

Rebel Support

New 07 Dec 2023 Asked by rhinoprodigy 34 Comments

Mark! Where's my Rebel creature type support for a Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero EDH deck? How high on the Storm Scale is the Rebel/Mercenary fetch ability?

Rebel, the creature type, is much more likely to see new cards than the Rebel/Mercenary fetch ability.

Masques Block Assessment

New 10 Oct 2023 Asked by braveswordwielder 31 Comments

The weakness of Masques block was always overstated, I think. Yes, it paled in comparison to Urza’s Block, but most blocks did, and after Invasion rotated in Standard was defined by cards like Rebels, Blastoderm, Saproling Burst, Troublesome Spirit, Chimeric Idol, and Nether Spirit more than any of the new cards. The problem with Masques block was that it was boring, not that it was especially weak for its time.

I won’t argue it wasn’t boring. I will argue that it wasn’t weak for its time.

Mercadian Masques Evaluation

New 10 Oct 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 66 Comments

You have said that R&D made Mercadian Masque a "weak" block, but its a block with free spells, rebel, Brainstorm, spell shapers, if it was printed into Standard today it would probably be the most dominant set being played. How in R&D's eyes was the block made "weaker"?

It was significantly weaker than Urza’s Saga Block. : )

Rebel Army's Future

If / When: Rebel Army

If. While I assume we’ll use amass again, I’m not sure we’ll make every creature type people are asking about.

Creature Type Timing

New 28 Jun 2023 Asked by viorea 25 Comments

At what point do cards get their class, and is there a chance that a card could be a standalone ally typing in a set, if it doesnt feel like a stretch thematically? (Also awesome to see a few rebels being seen in one <3)

Creature types, if not mechanically relevant, get assigned near the end of the process.

Nomads in Premier Sets

Hey Mark, do you think a few Nomads could show up in a premier set like the Rebel creature type did?

It’s possible.

Creature Type Updates

New 01 Mar 2023 Asked by captainjackharness 36 Comments

Any thoughts on giving creatures with types in their name the actual creature type? Such as Shadowmoor's Demigod of Revenge getting Demigod, in addition to its Spirit Avatar types it already has? Or Elite Inquisitor getting Inquisitor? Or the Aether Revolt Rebels getting that?

When we errata creature types, we often do that, but not always. The word being in the name doesn’t always line up. A Giant Spider is not a Giant as an example.

Keyword Mechanic Nuances

New 22 Feb 2023 Asked by eyeball-frog 59 Comments

Keywording a "living weapon" mechanic seems to run into the issue that the token's size and type must be set by the keyword. Is that why For Mirrodin! was given a plane-specific name, since who knows if 2/2 rebels will be appropriate the next time you want to do a similar keyword?

Yes.

Rebel vs Ally

New 30 Jan 2023 Asked by lordprimus95 48 Comments

Curiosity: Why Rebel instead of Ally? I don't see Rebel a big tribal to make a library around

Because they were Rebels more so than Allies. Creature types are more based on flavor than anything else. They only time we might prioritize something if if that set (or sometimes Standard with something like Party) has a creature type theme that the card might want to be part of.

Rebel Type Importance

New 26 Jan 2023 Asked by saralunaisme 45 Comments

Now that all the cards are revealed, I’m confused about why you guys made a big deal about the Rebel creature type coming back. I’m still very excited about the set, but pretty disappointed by the gap between the implication that they’d be a big part of the set and the reality of only getting a handful of insular cards.

We weren’t trying to make a “big deal” out of it. It’s a small element of the set we knew some players would be happy to see.

For Mirrodin Mechanic

New 19 Jan 2023 Asked by archsinccubus 84 Comments

So like... Why did you make a mechanic called "For Mirrodin!" Not the mechanic itself is bad, it's an improved version of Living Weapon. But the name is just... So timeline and setting specific that it basically guarantees it'll never be used again, regardless of the Storm Scale. So.... Why?

We did it for Mirrodin. : )It was flavorful, and tied to a 2/2 red Rebel token. If we want to do it again, odds are it will have a new token and a new name.
