Ape Trivia

New 30 Dec 2019 Asked by graymerchantsmonomyth 24 Comments

May I please have some birthday trivia on apes in Magic?

For a long time all Simians were creature type Ape, but a few years ago we added Monkey. All the playtest cards in Alliances, by the way, had the word “Monkey” in the title. They were rebelling against the story having sentient gorillas in it. Happy Birthday!

White's Card Drawing Potential

New 21 Dec 2019 Asked by anarresurras 41 Comments

Is white allowed to give card draw to another player, instead of all? giving cards to players that are really ahead in commander can be problematic, but making alliances can be really useful!

It’s something we could explore.

Definition of Politics

New 23 Jun 2019 Asked by arandomstringofcharacters 47 Comments

"I’m just not a big fan of politics in my Magic." I'm not sure what Commander has can be called "politics". With most players there are no alliances, no favor trading, and no grudges. There are just people you have to take out sooner, people you'd prefer to tackle later, and people who offer a rolling stream of symmetric effect benefits that make them more useful alive than dead (until you realize their mostly unmolested board is unassailable). It's not politics, just multiplayer competition.

Multiplayer competition *is* politics. Decisions are influenced by what people say to one another. That’s what “politics” in gaming means.

Article Access Issue

New 09 Jan 2019 Asked by mois113 21 Comments

Hey Mark, I can't read your "Building Alliances" articles, whenever I open them I get redirected to the german wotc magic homepage.

Anyone have a guess as to why this is happening?

Library Shuffle Colors

New 05 Jan 2019 Asked by jimharbor 46 Comments

What colors get "Target player shuffles their library?" Thanks for answering our questions sir

That’s not an effect we want to do anymore. Red did it on the one card with just that affect (Alliances’ Soldier of Fortune- one of my earliest designs, by the way).

Mechanic Reuse Ratings

New 03 Jan 2019 Asked by captainnv 20 Comments

Can you tell us what some of the numbers on the whiteboard featured in your Building Alliances article referred to?

We were rating the chance of reusing the mechanic. 1 was low, 3 was high.

Ape Theme Origin

New 09 Dec 2018 Asked by braveswordwielder 54 Comments

With regards to Simian Spirit Guide, the card it’s a riff of, Elvish Spirit Guide, was from Alliances. Alliances had a heavy Ape theme in red, so it’s an Ape because if it had originally been printed in Alliances, that the type it probably would have been.

Good point.

Event Attendance

New 11 Aug 2018 Asked by nerdhaven-blog 19 Comments

Are you going to be at the Alliances event in September and/or do you know which WOTC reps will be there?

I will not. I don’t know who will be.

Request for New Ninjas

New 24 Jun 2018 Asked by broomtl 38 Comments

Hey Mark! Long time Blogatogger and MTG Player here (playing since Alliances! Never quit! :) ). I’m reading the recent Ninjutsu/Ninja posts and would like to ask you guys to please print new ninjas. If possible, an UB Legendary one. They are among my favourite creature types of all time and I keep hoping seeing new ones since forever.

I think we’ll eventually make more Ninjas. Also, I call Blogatog followers Question Marks rather than Blogatoggers.

Homelands Placement Explained

New 09 Jun 2018 Asked by thatdummy 36 Comments

So, what's the story behind Homelands appearing smack dab in the middle of Ice Age and Alliances? To my knowledge it's the only time it's happened in a Magic block's history. (I know Coldsnap did replace Homelands, btw.)

Alliances wasn’t actually designed as a continuation of Ice Age. The connection was all done in development.

Fallen Empires Context

New 19 Dec 2017 Asked by jasonvorthos-blog 12 Comments

In the beginning, a lot of set were designed by playtesting team. East Coast playtester; Antiquities + Ice Age Bridge Club; Mirage + Visions Peter Adkison rpg friends; Legends + Homeland What's the context behind Fallen Empire? Was it rushed like Arabian Night? It feel so weird and different than the other sets of its time. It is also very cohesive in flavor.

Fallen Empires was designed by the East Coast Playtesters (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty & Chris Page), the same design team that did Antiquities, Ice Age & Alliances.

Booster Pack Sizes

New 05 Aug 2017 Asked by pepinismo 25 Comments

Trivia podcast: Alliances booster packs actually have 12 cards, not 15. I think you skipped that size? So you've done 5, 8, 10, 12 and 15 IIRC.

Yes, Alliances was 12. Good catch.

Dominaria's Return Timeline

New 03 May 2017 Asked by astralwizard85 126 Comments

You keep calling Dominaria a return set. We didn't leave Dominaria for a number of years after Magic started. When did we finally actually "return"?

Alpha was in Dominaria.Left in Arabian Nights for Rabiah.Returned to Dominaria in Antiquities.Left again in Homelands for Ulgrotha. Returned in Alliances.Left again in Tempest for Rath.Returned in Urza’s Saga.Left again in Mercadian Masques for Mercadia.Returned in Prophecy.Left again for Mirrodin.Returned in Time Spiral.Left again in Lorwyn.

First Return Set

New 30 Apr 2017 Asked by vaezarek 31 Comments

I was thinking. Technically Shadowmoor is our first return set. We just returned to the dark side of a plane we were already on.

Our first return set was either Antiquities if you consider Alpha to be set on Dominaria or Alliances if you don’t.

Wedding Advice & Trivia

New 09 Mar 2017 Asked by stormx 35 Comments

Hey Mark, I got engaged over the weekend. Any chance I could get some wedding advice, or some wedding related MTG trivia? : )

The Alliances card Exile was almost called Marriage of Convenience (with different art).Happy Birthday!

Comparing Free Spells

New 04 Mar 2017 Asked by neito 46 Comments

Which "Free" spells do you think are less broken, the Alliances ones (like Force of Will) or the Urza's ones (like Rewind)?

The Pitch spells (the nickname for the Alliances’ cards) are less broken than the Free spells from Urza’s Saga. Less is the optimal word. : )

Multiple Arts Experiment

New 04 Mar 2017 Asked by greatghoul 48 Comments

This complaint is probably a few years too late. But I really hate the multiple arts in alliances/homelands/fallen empires. Especially when the art is EXTREMELY similar. Anaba shaman for instance is almost the exact same art, just facing the other direction! Thanks for not doing that anymore.

We consider it an important experiment because we learned how much (most) players hated it.

Snow and Chandra Trivia

New 22 Feb 2017 Asked by rimefeathermage 28 Comments

Hey Maro! It's my birthday! Have any cool snow trivia? If not, Chandra trivia would also be hot. Thanks! :D

Alliances didn’t originally have Snow in it as it wasn’t designed to be a follow-up to Ice Age.Happy Birthday!

Birthday Trivia Request

New 01 Jan 2017 Asked by whoisangelx 31 Comments

Hello MaRo, today (the first) is acting as my birthday. I was wondering if I could get some trivia, if you can remember it, what was the first card you designed chronologically that saw print, or any rare old trivia. Happy new year.

The first three cards I designed that saw print were on the first set I worked on, Alliances (I was one of 13 people on the development team). I designed Gustha’s Scepter, Library of Lat-Nam and Solider of Fortune. All were hole fills for cards killed in development.Happy Birthday’
