Card Templating and Phrasing

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by standtoarms 89 Comments

Hi, Mark! A templating question (with some recent card text for reference):

Whenever you commit a crime, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life. This ability triggers only once each turn.

Whenever one or more +1/+1 counters are put on Dusk Legion Duelist, draw a card. This ability triggers only once each turn.To save space and avoid any sense of letdown, why does Magic not more frequently use phrasing such as the following?

The first time you commit a crime each turn, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life.

The first time one or more +1/+1 counters are put on Dusk Legion Duelist each turn, draw a card.Unrelated feedback: I quite like these designs, which slot perfectly into a certain Burn deck of mine: Amped Raptor; Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury; Fear of Missing Out (such good art); Bloodbraid Marauder; also Inventor's Axe.

Two main reasons. One, it becomes a memory issue where you have to think back to what you did before you cast this spell. Two, it increases the chances that you miss a chance to use the card the turn you play it.

Retro Frame Timing

New 21 May 2024 Asked by ondansefur 2 Comments

Hi Mark. Happy taco Tuesday. I was just wondering why cards like fury (and the rest of the cycle), and ragavan don’t just get retro frame printings in their original MH set and wizards opts to waits til later modern horizons sets? It’s a very feel bad for customers when they have to buy a version of a card that should have been printed originally given the set. I now feel more unhappy than happy that the version I wanted is out because I had to spend unnecessary money in the end (which is probably the point from the business side). Why not just print the cool chase rares in MH sets in retro fraw to begin with? Hope you eat some tacos today Mark.

There was a limited number of slots for the retro frame and Ragavan didn’t make the list. Note we have to choose the cards long before we have any feedback from the audience.

Legendary Morph Challenges

New 08 Feb 2024 Asked by natew000 31 Comments

Akroma, Angel of Fury is the only legendary card with a morph or disguise ability. Considering that morph/disguise is a way to make extra copies of legendary cards useful, is there a reason that the more recent sets have not included any with those abilities?

It allows players to accidentally turn a second one face up and destroy it, so we try not to make that happen too much.

Unquenchable Fury Naming

New 28 Nov 2023 Asked by sombramainexe 15 Comments

Is there a reason Unquenchable Fury from NEC was given that name when it was given to a supplemental card in Battle the Horde or was that not considered?

We don’t consider the names in Battle for the Horde to be official, in the sense that we can’t use those names for new cards.

Chandra's Goggles

New 19 Jul 2023 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 29 Comments

RE: GOGGLES. chandra is depicted wearing her goggles (over her eyes) on at least 5 cards: act on impulse, chandra pyromaster, chandra's fury, chandra's revolution, and fiery confluence. there are also multiple cards where she is facing away from the viewer or depicted too small to tell if she is wearing them. young pyromancer, who is dressed to look like chandra, also has the goggles on.

Pitch Mechanics Future

New 08 Jul 2023 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 32 Comments

the printing of the pitch elementals in modern horizons 2 (fury, solitude, etc.) and the new forces (negation, vigor, etc) indicate that this alternate cost is not something relegated to magic's past. but while we've seen the specific restrictions change (X cost for shoals, 2 cards in coldsnap, etc.) the cards exiled always need to share a color. could we see pitch cards that need a card of a second color to be exiled? or a specific card type? or multicolored cards that can pitch either color?

The challenge is not breaking the color pie. If a card does a blue effect, for example, you have to have a payment that ensures you’re playing blue.

Horizontally Framed Cards Possibility

New 26 Apr 2022 Asked by mysterio797 34 Comments

Hello Mark, why has Magic not had more horizontally framed cards like Burning Cinder Fury of Crimson Chaos Fire?

We don’t want to do it in a card that taps (as Magic players are trained to see a certain orientation as tapped/untapped) and there aren’t a lot of opportunities. I do think we’ll find one some day.

Reason for Reprinting Unquenchable Fury

New 08 Feb 2022 Asked by smol-ball-of-stress 41 Comments

Is there a reason why you printed Unquenchable Fury again in this set when it was already printed in the Battle the Horde deck?

Those cards aren’t treated as official Magic cards and thus do not eliminate names as an option for future cards.

Understanding Unquenchable Fury Redundancy

Did you know that Unquenchable fury from the Kamaigawa commander deck is also the name of a Theros Battle the horde card?

I do.

Power Level of Free Spells

New 24 Jun 2021 Asked by k0olmini 55 Comments

Hey Mark!I've noticed a certain trend in Modern Horizon's 1 and 2. The "free" spells clearly have blue at the best and red at the worse. Blue seems to get access to what it usually does, Force of Negation is negate and Subtlety is sort of like Hinder. Yet for red it seems like design if VERY careful to not give red direct damage. Force of Rage, two 3/1's that die at end step and Fury only hits players. I think it is pretty obvious that red is being severely bottlenecked on its power level for free spells and blue continues to be the 'best' color, why is that?

Because defensive spells are much less dangerous as free spells then offensive spells.

Largest Number in Card Cycle

New 18 Oct 2020 Asked by delightofthefarceur 46 Comments

What is the largest number of cards you could think of that could define a cycle? So far my highest count from what was done is 20. (A tie between the Magus cards and the cycle from the original Ravnica block that has 2 monocolour cards from each guild that gave a bonus effect if you paid for it with the other colour, as in Boros Fury-Shield)

It depends how loosely you define a cycle. Twenty is about the tops without getting super loose.

Interest in horizontal permanents

New 23 Apr 2020 Asked by ilgwa 19 Comments

Can I request more horizontal permanents? (Like Burning Cinder Fury of Crimson Chaos Fire)

It probably requires a new card type, one that doesn’t ‘t tap.

Chandra Mechanics

New 21 Aug 2019 Asked by nexusgames 90 Comments

There was a question from November 2016 about Chandra, Flamecallers +0 (discard your hand, draw that many +1) and your answer was "the debate is whether that's a bend or straight up allowed in Red" - we've had Heartwarming Redemption and Khorvath's Fury since then but nothing on a permanent - how did that debate end?

For now it goes on spells and Chandra.

Trample Mechanic Queries

New 30 Sep 2018 Asked by killerofgiantswi 30 Comments

I've seen a few questions regarding trample on instants and sorceries, but i believe that effectively there are several spells that effectively already have it, Aurelia's Fury off the top of my head comes to mind.

Black border can kind of mimic it, but not do it exactly.

Landscape Mode Full Art

New 05 Aug 2018 Asked by jhyrryl 24 Comments

Has there been any consideration for full art lands where the art is oriented in landscape mode, rather than portrait? I'm thinking of "Burning Cinder Fury of Crimson Chaos Fire", but with the frame oriented correctly.

Because tracking the tapped state of lands is so important, we don’t want to mess with art orientation. Note Burning Cinder Fury was on an enchantment and thus doesn’t tap.

Akroma Morph Choice

In hindsight, would you still put Morph on Akroma, Angel of Fury?

Yes.

Planeswalker Deck Spells

New 07 Mar 2018 Asked by metallix87 23 Comments

Hey Mark. Do you think, moving forward, the planeswalker-specific spells in the Planeswalker Decks could be more general, as opposed to requiring a specific card? For instance, having Angrath's Fury care about any Angrath card as opposed to the one specifically in the deck?

Usually some are specific and some are general depending on different issues including power level.

Landscape Art Layout

New 23 Jan 2018 Asked by invisibletalker 28 Comments

Could permanents that seldom tap have landscape art/layout?

I did one in Unglued: Burning Cinder Fury of Crimson Chaos Fire

Damage Redirection in White

New 11 Jan 2018 Asked by themartiangeek 24 Comments

Are damage redirection effects still in white's section of the color pie without requiring another color (usually red, as in Deflecting Palm and Boros Fury-Shield)? Could something like Harm's Way still be printed?

It’s still in white’s part of the color pie.

Chaotic Black Border

New 18 Oct 2017 Asked by trishyeves 20 Comments

Would it ever be possible to move something like "Burning Cinder Fury of Crimson Chaos Fire" into the black border space?

It’s a bit chaotic for black border, but maybe.
