Artifact Synergy Appreciation

New 22 Sep 2023 Asked by la-femme-de-stardust 48 Comments

Hey mark, I've really been enjoying how green and black have been getting interesting and unique artifacts and artifact synergies of late. Specifically cards like Sarinth steelseeker and vat of rebirth, I really appreciate them.

Happy to hear that.

Attitude toward Recontextualizing

New 15 Feb 2022 Asked by su92 21 Comments

When a Limited environment has a card that's contextually much less powerful than normal (Terror in Mirrodin, Glory Seeker in Rise of Eldrazi), do you consider that good/interesting design? Or do players end up feeling "tricked" by those?

I think a little recontextualizing is fun, but you don’t want too much of it.

Trivia on Glissa Sunseeker

New 10 Nov 2021 Asked by dolbyzalo 33 Comments

Hey Mark, looks like my birthday trivia got swallowed last week. Can I get some trivia on my favorite character Glissa Sunseeker?

Glissa was the first creature to have “mana in your mana pool matters”. I was trying to give her something new because she was the protagonist of the novel. Happy Belated Birthday!

Keywords Outside of Standard

New 15 Aug 2021 Asked by needlerfanpudge 35 Comments

I understand not wanting to put nonevergreen keywords in set as they go through Standard. However, would it make sense to grant them the keywords when they're only legal in formats outside of that? For a non Consider example, Gearseeker Serpent would gain Affinity for Artifacts.

That gets into a larger question: how often do we want cards to function in a way that the written card doesn’t tell you?

Dread Wight Group Membership

New 30 Jul 2021 Asked by szwanger 40 Comments

With Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, Dread Wight joins a select group of cards including Glory Seeker, Restore Balance, Stasis Cocoon, Void Shatter, etc. What qualifies a card for membership in this group?

I assume card names where all the words in the name are themself card names.

Rarity and Promo Card Discounts

New 03 May 2020 Asked by sirapplesaws 18 Comments

Silver-bordered rules question: Let's say I have Rarity in play, and I want to cast a promo card from back before rarities were defined on cards, like DragonCon Nalanthi Dragon or the HarperPrism Book Promo Windseeker Centaur. Do I get a cost discount? If not, what rarity should they be considered?

Cards without a rarity don’t get a discount.

Green's First Strike Ability

New 27 Mar 2020 Asked by darthvedik 51 Comments

Hey MaRo, could you provide some insight into why Green doesn't get or shouldn't get First strike unconditionally (Glissa Sunseeker). What about Green as far as the color itself or its philosophies doesn't make First strike fit?

We limit how many colors have any one ability. White and red, the combat-oriented colors, have it primary. Black which has a lot of knights has it tertiary. Three colors is enough.

Dryad Greenseeker Validity

New 25 Mar 2019 Asked by b4da1r 31 Comments

Wait, is Dryad Greenseeker from M19 a mistake? That was pretty recent [T, Look at the top card of your library. If it’s a land card, you may reveal it and put it into your hand.]

Green can land fetch, so that is fine.

Color Identity Balance

New 20 Dec 2018 Asked by noblecuriosity 37 Comments

Blue excelling at many low as-fan things vs. other colors excelling at a few high as-fan things means blue's splashy (set-selling) MEMORABLE cards get to be more varied and unique. Ex. All Modern Masters mythics: U: Keiga, Snapcaster Mage, Temporal Manipulation, Tezzeret the Seeker, Vendilion Clique. 5 radically different effects, 2 blue-exclusive. Vs. R: Bonfire of the Damned, Comet storm, Kiki-Jiki, Past in Flames, Ryusei; 3/5 are damage boardwipes, the other 2 could be bends in U. See issue?

I’ve talked plenty about how Snapcaster is pushing more towards red and Vendilion Click is a black card masquerading as a blue card (aka a heavy bend). Things are more balanced than they seem.

Booster Pack Definition

New 09 Oct 2018 Asked by thatdummy 29 Comments

So, for Booster Tutor and Lore Seeker, what counts as a booster pack? Do the Dominaria and Guilds theme boosters count? What about the DotP promo boosters? A standard showdown or an Ugin's Fate pack? A seeded booster from a core game 7th, 8th, or 9th edition?

If it’s a sealed booster pack, you’re good to go. Not in an actual booster? No good.

Target Destruction Criteria

New 04 Oct 2018 Asked by evios31-blog 55 Comments

A number of cards recently (Vraska, relic seeker, status/statue, bounty agent) have "destroy target artifact, creature or enchantment" as opposed to the cleaner "destroy target nonland permanent". Is there a reason for this? i ask because one of the design principles you tend to stress is to keep things simpler/easier to understand and to avoid wordiness on cards (the text on bounty agent is a mouthful)

I assume the reason is so they can’t destroy planeswalkers.

Omnath Origin Trivia

New 15 Sep 2018 Asked by piggles-destroyer-of-worlds-dea 29 Comments

Hi MaRo! Today is my birthday and I'd really like some trivia on my first and favourite (don't tell the others) commander: Omnath, locus of mana!

I had first messed around with mechanically caring about what mana was in your mana pool in Mirrodin with Glissa Sunseeker. Ken Nagle, inspired by that, made Omnath in Worldwake. Happy Birthday!

Green Card Draw

New 24 Jun 2018 Asked by beautifulboodle 33 Comments

Is Dryad Greenseeker another one of those cards where, since it's green card draw not associated with creatures, it wouldn't be put into a set file anymore?

No, green can get land out of the library. That’s a different ability.

Early Magic Era

New 08 Mar 2018 Asked by aquipravoces 34 Comments

When asked how Storm Seeker got the "green light", your answer was that early Magic was different. What do you consider early Magic?

Pre-Mirage. There are ways to look at it though that extend it out further.

Storm Seeker Approval

Mark, can you help me figure out how Storm Seeker got.... The green light? n_n

Early Magic was a different time.

White Prowess Possibility

New 22 Apr 2017 Asked by ashmount-blog 27 Comments

Are we ever likely to see prowess in white again? I know it's primarily a U/R mechanic now but cards like Seeker of the Way and Monastrey Mentor were favourites of mine from Khans. Second only to Monastery Swiftspear of course :)

White has it tertiary which means it could show up infrequently.

Pseudo-Mechanics Rule

New 23 Mar 2017 Asked by thelifeofanoodle 23 Comments

About the "pseudo-mechanic" question(s). I interpreted it more along the lines of Gearseeker Serpent's ability being pseudo-affinity than improvise.

The rule with this is if there is just one or two cards that do something that was ability worded in another set, we don’t use the ability word.

Affinity Keyword Future

New 14 Dec 2016 Asked by pelirrojo-93 34 Comments

Just a quick question about a keyword I didn't see in the article Monday: Will affinity ever make a reappearance or will it only be worded out like on Gearseeker Serpent?

Affinity could make a return although I believe when we next see it keyworded it won’t be Affinity for Artifacts but some other subset.

Affinity for Artifacts

New 17 Sep 2016 Asked by chilliaxe-blog 42 Comments

Hi Mark! Just wondering how you managed to get Gearseeker Serpent into Kaladesh. I thought affinity for artifacts was a 10 on the storm scale :O

One card is not a whole mechanic.
