If/When a version of Improvise/Convoke but for lands?

Isn’t that all spells? : )

Attractions as Artifacts

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by timelyintervention 26 Comments

Re: Attractions as ArtifactsOnce they are in play, are they treated like a regular artifact? Can they be tapped to pay an alternate cost (ie. improvise) or enchanted or destroyed? Also, I am loving what I am seeing so far. Technically, I'm annoyed because I'm going to have to make a whole new Unfinity cube instead of just adding cards to my Unstable cube. ;)

Yes, they are normal artifacts that can do whatever an artifact does.

Enchantment Variant of Gold Possibility

New 22 Apr 2022 Asked by metamagix 36 Comments

Do you think an enchantment variant of gold is possible (sac for mana of any color NO TAP NECESSARY)
Because affinity and improvise for enchantments aren’t as problematic I’d reckon it’s design space that lets you keep mana fixing and generation while giving artifact treasures a break

I do think we’ll make an enchantment token one day similar to Treasure, Food, and Clue, but the flavor won’t be it’s a tangible thing.

Colored Artifacts and Improvise

New 03 Apr 2022 Asked by matthewgm 38 Comments

If colored artifacts were as common then as they are today, do you think Improvise would have let you tap for WUBRG costs? (Making it more like Convoke)

Yes.

Improvising with Colored Artifacts

New 07 Mar 2022 Asked by kmattmebro 40 Comments

If Improvise were created today, do you think it would include the "taps for {1} or a mana of that card's color" clause the way convoke does?

Probably as colored artifacts are commonplace.

Enter the Dungeon Twice Scenario

New 15 May 2021 Asked by heyitsmeurspacewizard 67 Comments

If you cast Enter the Dungeon, and then during that subgame, you cast it again, what happens? Do you have to find a second, smaller table to play under?

If you can, go one floor down. : )Improvise the best you can. Try to capture the spirit.

Evergreen Keywords Distribution

New 12 May 2020 Asked by suerterec 23 Comments

Hi Mark ! We know that evergreen keywords are distributed between the different colors, but is it the case for non-evergreen keywords (e.g. Improvise, Ascend) ? Or does it depend on the set where the mechanic appears ?

Set mechanics can be divided up by color.

Archetype Linearity

New 04 Feb 2020 Asked by tmiguelt 32 Comments

Are enabler/payoff (A/B) archetypes that *aren't* parasitic, like Constellation (THB); lifegain matters (M20); discard matters (AKH); Historic-matters (DOM) and Improvise (AER) considered linear? They do get better the more you have of either, but you have to try to balance the quantities of enabler and payoff.

They have a linear component.

Convoke vs. Improvise

New 26 Mar 2019 Asked by perkymanz 34 Comments

I would think that Convoke and Improvise would be the same on the storm scale. Is the difference just because Improvise is slightly less popular?

Convince works in any set (because of the percentages of creatures in sets). Improvise can only work in an artifact set.

Commander Set Design Praise

New 27 Jul 2018 Asked by ultradinosaurdude 46 Comments

Please pass along thanks to the C18 design team! One of the reasons why Commander sets are always the some of my favorite spoiler seasons is the ability to bring back old mechanics. New takes on stuff like Metalcraft, Retrace, Evoke, Miracle, Improvise... it's all been really great to see!

They’re also fun cards to design.

Treasure and Gold Tokens

New 05 Nov 2017 Asked by bitsow 16 Comments

With Treasure playing better with Improvise cards, are they going to replace Gold tokens going forward?

Not necessarily. We’re more concerned with the interaction in Standard than Modern.

Treasure Usage Mechanics

New 21 Oct 2017 Asked by battle-of-wits 27 Comments

If I spell swindle a little girl getting half a treasure, can I use half of that treasure to reduce the cost of an improvise spell by 1/2 of a generic mana?

No. You need a whole treasure to use it. I’d let you use two half treasures as if it was a whole treasure.

Treasure Token Standard

New 17 Sep 2017 Asked by reels-and-cartridges 27 Comments

Is Treasure the new standard moving forward for Lotus Petal/Gold artifact tokens? So they have to tap and sacrifice instead of just sacrifice?

Not necessarily. Improvise won’t always be in Standard.

Treasures and Improvise

New 03 Sep 2017 Asked by raptorstalon-blog 30 Comments

How far into development of Ixalan did you get before you realised that Gold and Improvise were an issue and that you had to create Treasure?

As I wasn’t involved much in the development, I’m not sure.

Treasure vs Improvise

New 03 Sep 2017 Asked by bloodstonegoth 71 Comments

Why have you tried to block the interaction between Treasures and Improvise, if the latter isn't even a strong mechanic. I have made multiple Improvise decks because I like the idea, some were even playable, but none of them broke the format.

Gold became Treasures *because* it was a problem with Improvise in playtesting.

Gold and Treasure Tokens

New 01 Sep 2017 Asked by psyberdaemon-deactivated2019072 49 Comments

Would it be possible to errata Gold tokens to have the Treasure artifact type?

No, they work differently. Gold tokens don’t require tapping. We tried Gold tokens originally for Ixalan but they were problematic with Improvise in Standard.

Gold vs Treasure Tokens

New 29 Aug 2017 Asked by leonbread-blog 107 Comments

Why weren't Gold tokens used instead of creating the new Treasure tokens for Ixalan? Gold would have been on flavor for pirates and it would make cards the care about Treasure tokens backwards compatible with the few cards that already make Gold tokens.

The Gold tokens were problematic with the improvise mechanic from Aether Revolt, so we had to add a tap and change the token’s name.

Torment of Hailfire Props

New 22 Jul 2017 Asked by vespidsunset 25 Comments

Hi Mark! Just got home from FNM, playing an Improvise-based deck. Torment of Hailfire is a beautiful card, major high-fives for its designers.

High fives to be applied.

Constellation Mechanics

New 10 May 2017 Asked by sultaiascendancy-blog 34 Comments

I don't understand Constellation and enchantment matters can't work together when blocks like Scars of Mirrodin and Kaladesh with strong artifact matters themes have had both strong individual artifact cards and artifact matters mechanics like metalcraft and improvise without it being much of an issue. Strong enchantment matters + Constellation would be no riskier than those blocks, if anything it would be safer because enchantments don't have generic mana costs like artifacts do.

Neither of the sets you mentioned had artifactfall (all being artifacts to follow Constellation’s lead). “Enchantments matter” can work as a theme but we have to be careful how powerful the components are synergistically with one another.

Pseudo-Mechanics Rule

New 23 Mar 2017 Asked by thelifeofanoodle 23 Comments

About the "pseudo-mechanic" question(s). I interpreted it more along the lines of Gearseeker Serpent's ability being pseudo-affinity than improvise.

The rule with this is if there is just one or two cards that do something that was ability worded in another set, we don’t use the ability word.
