Is Form of the Dragon a bend, break, or fine? (The “Moat” effect)

It’s a pretty decent bend.

Clamfolk Lore for D&D Conversion

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by bill-cipher-official 8 Comments

Mr Mark, what is the lore / biology of the Clamfolk? I would really like to know, due to wanting to make a Clamfolk race in D&D 5e.

There isn’t much established lore save a few pieces of flavor text. Some Clamfolk live in Clamville. One Clamfolk village got shelled. There are Clamfolk musicians who play “Duke of Pearl”. There are Clamfolk rebels.

Nature of Serpents in Magic

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 6 Comments

Yes, serpent is a synonym for snake, absolutely (...dragon also means snake). But I presume serpents in Magic are typically not snakes, as those are separate types (which have never occurred on the same card!), and the art typically portrays them as a mix of fish and snake characteristics.

Serpents are sea monsters in Magic. The question that came up with Serpents was we felt a lot of people would say yes “serpents” are an Earth animal as it’s a synonym for snake.

Trivia on Sphinxes

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by eviloverlordsinc 12 Comments

Hi Mark, it's my birthday for another hour or so, and so I'd like to request some trivia on Sphinxes in Magic.

We had trouble finding blue’s iconic creature. It needed to fly as blue is the color most associated with flying. We also wanted the creature to be intelligent. Dragons were red’s iconic. We stumbled upon Sphinxes one day, and said, “they tell riddles, that’s pretty smart.” Happy Birthday!

Potential for Other D&D Planes

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by darcskies17 1 Comments

Hey Mark first I want to thank you for what you and your team do. Is it possible that we could get other D&D planes as sets. Faerun has a lot of history but there are other planes that could be awesome Inspiration for MTG?

It is possible.

Ethos Differences in Magic and D&D

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by blorpityblorpboop 2 Comments

Can we have a podcast about the differences and analogies in Ethos between Magic and D&D(Color pie vs. alignments)?

I am not nearly as well versed in D&D’s alignments as I am Magic’s color pie.

Dragonstorm in Standard

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by bobbymcbobbo 7 Comments

Is Dragonstorm too strong for standard? I think I'll be a little disappointed if we get to the end of the Dragonstorm story arc and the card isn't printed into any of the sets within it. Is this something you (WotC, not you personally) took into consideration when naming the arc? I realize it's probably too early for you to answer this now, so I'll ask again after we return to Tarkir.

We’ve learned not to let old card names keep us from using words we need to use.

Excitement for Upcoming Sets

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 8 Comments

Hi Mark! Just wanna give shout out to awesome sets you have planned for the Dragonstorm arc: Bloomburrow for the high fantasy traditionalists and typal lovers, Duskmourn for the modern horror fans and a different take on an Enchantment matters set, The Death Race as a fun exploration of the Omenpaths and finally a set centered around Vehicles (I mean it's not confirmed but…c'mon), and a long-awaited Return to Tarkir set for Magic veterans and those who waited for a wedge faction set! I am absolutely stoked for all of these sets, and I am glad that Magic embraces variety enough to take risks for modern, novel aesthetics while still preserving old, familiar aesthetics!

I’m excited you’re excited.

Distribution of Unique Secret Lairs

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by armadagon 4 Comments

Mark, there are still three secret Lairs that have mechanically unique cards: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Dr Who: Regeneration, and Secret Lair X Lara Croft. Previous "Universes Within" versions of mechanically unique Secret Lair cards were reprinted via The List, but with The List being phased out as of Bloomburrow, how does Wizards plan on distributing these cards in the future?

It hasn’t been announced yet.

Using More or Less

Can I use more or less on Sword of dungeons and Dragons to roll a D21

You may. The trick is finding a 21-sided die.

Understanding 'Each Color' in Acorn Games

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by eredithdriscol 4 Comments

Per culation's ask about "each color" in acorn games, would having Water Gun Balloon Game or Sword of Dungeons and Dragons, which reference pink and gold but aren't those colors themselves, count for those colors being "active"?What about if I had Avatar of Me in the graveyard (and brown eyes)?

To count an additional color you have to have a permanent of that color on the battlefield, not just a permanent that refers to it.

Sword of D&D

I know it’s not how you meant it but Sword of Dungeons & Dragons also used a d20

That’s because it was referencing Dungeons & Dragons.

Special Draft Experience Feedback

New 29 May 2024 Asked by lebreadbox-blog 53 Comments

I played the 50th anniversary DnD battle for baldur's Gate special draft with the new dungeon. HOLY COW. Was this ever a fun draft. I LOVED the collector booster in your draft pool. I loved the new dungeon. And the set remains as fun as ever to draft and play. High fives, yes. But please, can we have more special drafts like this?

I can pass along how much you enjoyed it.

Die Rolling Cards

New 27 May 2024 Asked by violant-apologia 6 Comments

I'm not even sure die rolling exists outside of an Un or D&D set.
It does, though only on two cards: Mr. House, President and CEO, and Arden Angel.

Gaming Joy Shared

New 26 May 2024 Asked by snarkatr0n 4 Comments

Happy birthday, Mark! I got into Magic with New Phyrexia's Intro deck, but Dark Ascension was the first new set I was around for. I remember for our first few games my brother thought Llanowar Elves searched the deck for a forest each turn. You can imagine I lost more often than not. Dimir is still my favourite color combo from that. Now I'm lucky enough to play magic with my partner of 9 years (today's our anniversary) and two of my dnd friends, and it's been a constant in my life

D&D Card Trivia

New 16 May 2024 Asked by sapphic-recluse 20 Comments

Hello! Saturday, 18 May is my birthday and I'm requesting a(n early) spot of birthday trivia about any Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, please. It could be about a card from CLB or AFR, or something on the D&D side like the Strixhaven sourcebook. Many thanks!

This is the first Dungeons & Dragons themed Magic card we made. It was designed for Unstable, but first appeared in a special box at Hascon. When I designed the card, it rolled three six-sided dice, but the D&D team asked if we could change it to a twenty-sided die as that was more iconic for D&D.Happy Birthday!

Double Faced Card Rules

New 11 May 2024 Asked by tiwaztyrsfist 18 Comments

Hi Mark, can the rules currently support multiple Double Faced cards with the same front but different backs, OR multiple Double Faced cards with different fronts and the same backs (not like a meld, but identical back faces)?

As an example, say 4 cards that were the same card on the front, but 4 different alternate versions on the back, like a D&D druid with 4 different wild shape variations, OR 4 cards that were different creatures on the front, but the back were all the same legendary shapeshifter (Ovar, Lazav, etc), and the backs were identical.

The rules can’t support same front differential back, but can, hypothetically, support different fronts, same back.
