Magic's Unforeseen Evolution

New 01 Mar 2024 Asked by fuddlesthegatekeeper 27 Comments

Mark! I just turned 30 a few minutes ago! My birthday trivia request: in all of Magic's own 30 years, im sure it's gone places no one would have expected. If early mtg designers got a look into the future, at the game as it is presently, what aspect do you think would blow them away the most? (yourself included!)sorry if this has been answered across interviews and such, i just got to thinking about what a wild ride its been since i got into the game (worldwake) and the ways that magic has changed alongside my own life

Probably double-faced cards.

Landfall Keyword Logic

New 25 Oct 2022 Asked by eyeball-frog 27 Comments

Of the 119 landfall cards, only 5 don't have the "land enters the battlefield under your control" trigger. The exceptions are a cycle of common instants from Worldwake that instead look for whether a land has entered under your control this turn. So, if one were willing to errata those 5 cards to no longer have landfall, it could become a genuine keyword.

But it doesn’t need to be a keyword. It adds a vocabulary word for no reason. It works just fine as an ability word.

Worldwake Card Grouping Trivia

New 26 Oct 2021 Asked by aoliitis 33 Comments

Regarding Whales vs. Krackens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents. The first card to group them was Quest for Ula's Temple in Worldwake - which only had one kracken: Wrexial, the Risen Deep. Zendikar had 1 Krakens, 1 Octopus and 1 Serpent, but still no Leviathans. However, at the time of Worldwake's printing no whales had been printed since Great Whale in Urza's Saga nearly 12 years prior whereas Alara block had 3 Leviathans (and another was coming in M11).

Usage of Non-evergreen Mechanics

New 22 Sep 2021 Asked by kazzack 38 Comments

RE "Because we don’t use mechanics that aren’t evergreen if they’re not a focus of the set." If it were on the adversaries, multikicker would be on the same number of cards as Investigate. Out of curiosity, what makes that able to be a named mechanic? Just that it's been a big part of Innistrad before?

Investigate was in Shadows over Innistrad while multikicker was in Worldwake (set on Zendikar).

Trivia Regarding Omnath's Colors

New 25 Mar 2021 Asked by madeahippo-blog 44 Comments

hey Mark, my birthday is technically tomorrow but I'd like to ask for some trivia! Can you give me trivia on Omnath, and maybe more specifically when/how you guys decided he would gain more colors?

Omnath started as just a fun design in Worldwake. It wasn’t until their return in Battle for Zendikar that the idea of adding colors took form. Once we added the first color, we knew where it was going. Happy Birthday!

Landfall Mechanic Sustainability

New 01 Dec 2020 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 49 Comments

How much deeper is the landfall mechanic? We have had it in Zendikar, Worldwake, Battle for Zendikar, Oath of the Gatewatch, and Zendikar Rising as well as a smattering of other cards that have the mechanic without being named. I love the mechanic, but worry that the well will run dry eventually.

It’s a pretty open-ended mechanic, so there’s plenty to mine. Also, when it gets brought back we have access to reprints or tweaks of previous landfall cards.

Absence of Traps Mechanic

New 07 Sep 2020 Asked by coolflashyname 39 Comments

Were traps not a very popular mechanic or was Zendikar just decided to not be in need of them? I started magic back in worldwake and whenever I think of Zendikar I think of Traps and Landfall. I was surprised to see that it wasn't involved in the "return to form" for the plane.

We did make a new version of traps in vision design, but they didn’t make it to print.

Future of Mutate Creatures

New 15 May 2020 Asked by fuddlesthegatekeeper 31 Comments

Perhaps my question got buried but ill try again for good measure! Can i get an if or when on more mutate creatures? i adore the mechanic and im worried it won't show up again cuz its only on ikoria :( p.s. this set finally took the lead as my favorite over worldwake cuz it encapsulates the whole team work and adventure feeling but also BIG BOYS so thank you!

We have to see how it goes over in Ikoria first. It’s a complex mechanic, so it’s not something easy to find another home for.

Constellation on Instants

New 12 Jan 2020 Asked by spiritkhan 29 Comments

Did you ever design instant and sorceries with constellation, like you had in worldwake with landfall?

We talked about it, but felt we had enough cool designs without it.

Magic in Pop Culture

New 04 Aug 2019 Asked by mirrodinrestored 25 Comments

Magic in pop culture: In Warehouse 13, season 2 episode 2 (Mild Mannered), there's a scene where they go into a comic store and you can clearly see people playing Magic, as well as various Magic products for sale (I know I spotted packs including Worldwake as well as deck boxes and sleeves that I believe had Liliana art).

Thanks.

Foreshadowing in Card Design

New 27 Jun 2019 Asked by thealiasman 48 Comments

Is there any design concept behind a specific card from one set that links te story to the next set? I mean, is there any 'foreshadowing' card?

We’ve done a bunch. The first one that comes to mind is Eye of Ugin. Eye of Ugin was in Worldwake and referenced Eldrazi spells even though none existed yet.

Omnath Origin Trivia

New 15 Sep 2018 Asked by piggles-destroyer-of-worlds-dea 29 Comments

Hi MaRo! Today is my birthday and I'd really like some trivia on my first and favourite (don't tell the others) commander: Omnath, locus of mana!

I had first messed around with mechanically caring about what mana was in your mana pool in Mirrodin with Glissa Sunseeker. Ken Nagle, inspired by that, made Omnath in Worldwake. Happy Birthday!

Walking Archive Type

New 23 Sep 2017 Asked by lutherbellhendricksv 24 Comments

Walking Archive was printed in Worldwake as "Creature - Construct". It received errata before release clarifying that it was actually an Artifact Crewture. With R&D's Secret Lair in play, is Walking Archive a Creature, or an Artifact Creature?

A creature. It’s as written.

Mechanic Name Confusion

New 22 Sep 2017 Asked by aphrodieselac-blog 31 Comments

While searching for conversations about the explore mechanic I kept running into forum conversations on Explore the card from worldwake instead. Does MtG consider whether mechanic name overlapping with card name is confusing, and if so what part of the development cycle would this fall in?

We’ve named too many cards to have card names be off limits for mechanics.

Timing for Plane Returns

New 06 Aug 2017 Asked by nanabeats 129 Comments

What would you say is the minimum amount of time it would take for you to consider returning to or revisiting a plane? There were seven years between Ravnica and RTR, seven between Mirrodin and Scars, Six between Worldwake and BFZ, five between Innistrad and SOI, so I was wondering what your internal "minimum" for returns to these popular planes is.

Let me turn this question back on all of you? What do you all feel is the right amount of time for a return to a plane?

Leatherback Baloth Trivia

New 06 Apr 2017 Asked by idisegnidicarlo 29 Comments

First, thanks to you and all the people at Wizards! Then, april 3rd was my birthday...I wasn't able to ask in time, so I'm asking now. Could I get, please, a trivia on my favourite green creature ever, Leatherback Baloth? Thanks in advance and...long live green! :-)

Ken Nagle, the lead designer of Worldwake, loves big green creatures. I’m sure was this figuring out how to get the biggest possible three drop in green.Happy Birthday!

Spaghetti Block Cards

New 27 Sep 2016 Asked by barracius 38 Comments

I was just re-listening to the Worldwake podcast story about how you told people on Twitter that on that day you designed "Convertible Turtle." So, in that spirit of playtest names, what card did you design today?

Nothing yet, but I have to design Spaghetti block cards this afternoon.

Convertible Turtle Revelation

New 20 Sep 2016 Asked by crushcastles23 26 Comments

Did we ever learn what the Convertible Turtle was or is that not out yet?

It was Calcite Snapper from Worldwake.

BFZ Story Focus Error

New 11 May 2016 Asked by leslielived-blog 23 Comments

Hi Mark! Regarding your mistake that BFZ was focused on Rise when it should have focused on Zendikar and Worldwake: Aren't you hands somewhat tied by needing to finish telling the story? People are expecting the conclusion of the conflict from Rise to be in the return to Zendikar set. How would you have balanced this expectation with your lesson learned on BFZ?

We needed to have a resolution to the Eldrazi storyline. That didn’t require as many Eldrazi cards as we had. It didn’t have to be a war that populated almost all the set.

Manlands Distribution Strategy

New 24 Oct 2015 Asked by jacekenai 25 Comments

Why didn't you put all five manlands in OGW like all five were in Worldwake?

All five started in Battle for Zendikar originally.
