Preacher of the Schism Analysis

New 09 Jun 2024 Asked by groselhaviking 15 Comments

Re: Preacher of the SchismWould the last ability be in white if it didn't make you loose life? As it is already limited to once a turn and you have to be at least tied to most life, I would think it is fine in white.

Being rewarded for being ahead isn’t really white’s style.

Preacher of the Schism Color Suitability

Could Preacher of the Schism also work in White? (Without death touch)

The first ability, after the deathtouch, is fine in white. The second is not.

Card Name Rules

New 02 May 2024 Asked by mgmegadog 16 Comments

"Q1: Can the rules text of a non-acorn card change the name of a card? Q2: Can cards have multiple names? I was wondering if texts like "This card's name is also Reach Through Mists" or "This card is named Dragon's Approach while in the graveyard" were legal. Q1: No. Q2: The same rules text can appear on two differently named cards." Just FYI, both parts of your answer seem to be wrong. Spy Kit both changes the name of a card (the equipped creature) and gives that creature multiple names.

Spy Kit, I believe, is an Un-card that snuck into a non-Un set. It does some things that cause problems, I believe.

Land Destruction Promise

Reminder that Winota, Joiner of forces +Agent of Treachery enabled stealing three lands on turn four in Standard and you promised me a land destruction effect just as powerful.

When did I promise this? : )

Battlebond Trivia Request

New 02 Jan 2024 Asked by umberu 45 Comments

May I request birthday trivia about Battlebond or the plane of Kylem where it takes place?

Kylem is the only world where the entire set takes place in a single building (Valor’s Reach, the arena). Well, until Duskmourn comes out. : )Happy Birthday!

Ban Consistency Explained

New 17 Sep 2023 Asked by godkingjinping 40 Comments

And will you guys be consistent with bans. If underworld breach is unfun for legacy what makes you guys think we want to see it in modern.

Card power can vary greatly between formats. Something warping in one format might not even be good in another format. Much of card power has to do with the environment it exists in.

Arcane Subtype Lore

New 04 Sep 2023 Asked by cursedereaper 48 Comments

What would Arcane be outside of Kamigawa?
The lore says Arcane cards are the spells used by the Kami by channeling magic from their realm.
Is it fair to assume that Arcane spells are those that rach across realms? Could there be (lore wise) Arcane spells linked to Theores/Kaldheim gods and Eldrazi? The alternative art of through the breach at least implies possible relations to the blind eternities

The subtype Arcane can mean different things on different worlds.

White's New Mechanic

New 28 Aug 2023 Asked by pontemosca 34 Comments

Hi Maro, The Princess Takes Flight saga allows white to steal a creature. Is this a change? In the pass you have said Evangelize and Preacher are out of White Pie

It allows white to flicker a creature (over two turns) and get it back if it’s the controller. White can already do that.

Praise for Saw in Half

New 15 May 2023 Asked by krobat 39 Comments

Hi Mark, I just got to Through the Breach an Archon of Cruelty on my opponent's end step and then Saw in Half it the same step to untap with two of them. Saw in Half is such a cool card, please give my applause to whoever designed it (especially if it's you)!

I think Chris Mooney designed it, but I’m not 100% sure. It wasn’t me.

FIRE Design Changes

New 11 Apr 2023 Asked by jimhensonreject 27 Comments

I think a great subject for a podcast episode would be the ways that FIRE design has changed. Its very interesting comparing cards like Oko and Underworld Breach try to make a splash in older formats through sheer power vs modern FIRE design focusing more on doing so through backwards compatibility, modality, and niche strength.

I’ve already recorded a podcast on F.I.R.E. design.

Expanding Theft Effects

New 15 Jan 2023 Asked by honor-basquiat 38 Comments

If you had to expand Confiscate/Agent of Treachery style effects to an additional color, which color would you pick and why?

I don’t think we want a second color, but if we had to, probably red, as it’s the other color stealing things.

EDH Format Debate

New 24 Dec 2022 Asked by mtgedhiction 65 Comments

Hey Mark, the new Norn has sparked a bit of debate within the EDH format. It’s comparisons have been to hullbreacher and Leovold. Some are predicting or arguing for a ban. I am curious how the effect relates to whites slice of the colour pie. ETBs are used across all colours but is specifically interacting with that style of trigger, is that supposed to be a strength for white?

Stopping ETB effects is quite white. I don’t think white is primary in copying ETB effects, but it can do it. Praetors often require some bending as few effects and their mirror are both primary in the same color.

Dominarian Werewolves

New 09 Dec 2022 Asked by natew000 34 Comments

Traditionally, werewolves from Dominaria were black. Do you think all Dominarian werewolves are black, or could we see them in other colors too?

Traditionally? There’s only one black Werewolf definitely from Dominaria (Treacherous Werewolf). Lesser Werewolf is from Legends, but the set has creatures from multiple planes, although Dominaria was one of them. Greater Werewolf is from Ulgrotha. I bring this up because there just isn’t a lot of precedents for Werewolves on Dominaria, so we have some freedom if we want to make more.

Alliteration Rules

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by j-waffles 33 Comments

Alliteration means that a group of words start with the same sound. Often times this means the same letter, but not always. For example “cat”, “Quail”, and “Kidney” are all alliterative, although they each start with different letters. Some poets and linguists also argue that vowels are all alliterative with each-other, however that part is up for debate. Is there a reason Treacherous Trapezist only pays attention to spelling, rather than how a word sounds? “Circle of Confinement” passes the definition of alliteration according to Treacherous Trapezist, but it’s not actually alliterative.

I understand that Treacherous Trapezist’s definition doesn’t match the English definition, but it’s easier to track and identify, and that won the day. Magic-ese and English don’t always line up.

Alliteration Interpretations

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by neotrup 24 Comments

Should the reminder text of Treacherous Trapezist be treated as hard rules for alliteration, or just as a basic reminder? For example, Civil Servant would generally be considered alliterative while Citizen's Crowbar would not, despite the explanation in the reminder text.

It depends how rules compliant your play group is. If you were playing with me, I’d allow true alliteration as well as what the Trapezist defines, but technically it doesn’t follow the rules of the card.

Alliteration Rule

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by inferno390 28 Comments

Regarding Treacherous Trapezist, the definition of alliterative don't fully match the definition of alliteration, which is based on sound, not letter. So "Centaur Courser" is alliterative but doesn't actually have alliteration, but "Kiddie Coaster" isn't an alliterative permanent even though the name does have alliteration. What was the reason for that change? An issue of language compatibility? Was referring to the sound of a word too complex? Or something else?

We chose to prioritize something that was easy to monitor over perfectly matching the English definition. There is one spell in the set that is alliterative by the English defintion, but not by the Treacherous Trapezist.

BLUE's Use of Treasure

New 13 Apr 2022 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 42 Comments

Could you explain R&D’s philosophy with regard to how BLUE uses treasure? There’s been a couple cards (Malcolm Keen-Eyed Navigator, Prosperous Thief, hullbreacher) that feel a bit out of place to me. Not in line with how I expect blue to ramp generally

Blue really shouldn’t be making Treasure. We’ve justified it more than we should with Pirate flavor.

Treasures Mechanic Impact on Commander

New 10 Apr 2022 Asked by kriosuranous 55 Comments

I overall like treasures, but i feel like they are warping commander because three of the most overpowered cards of all time for the format (smothering tithe, Dockside Extortionist, and hullbreacher) all generate treasure, which leads to the mechanic being warping.

Ah, eternal formats, where mistakes live forever. : )
