Is Spy Network still in color for Blue? Or is having access to that type of information more in Black's color pie nowadays?

It’s still in pie for blue.

Card Name Rules

New 02 May 2024 Asked by mgmegadog 16 Comments

"Q1: Can the rules text of a non-acorn card change the name of a card? Q2: Can cards have multiple names? I was wondering if texts like "This card's name is also Reach Through Mists" or "This card is named Dragon's Approach while in the graveyard" were legal. Q1: No. Q2: The same rules text can appear on two differently named cards." Just FYI, both parts of your answer seem to be wrong. Spy Kit both changes the name of a card (the equipped creature) and gives that creature multiple names.

Spy Kit, I believe, is an Un-card that snuck into a non-Un set. It does some things that cause problems, I believe.

Spy Creature Type

New 24 Jan 2024 Asked by zanthr 20 Comments

Are spies a kind of Detective? Traditionally in Magic they'd either be Rgues or Ninjas, but a few creatures in the set with the Detective creature type look like they're doing espionage more than solving crimes.

When Unstable did them, they were creature type Spy.

Favorite Number Origin

New 09 Sep 2023 Asked by modoqm 44 Comments

Maro, my favorite number is 2097 but lately 11 has been catching up. How did 254 become your favorite number?

It’s a combination of 25 (my birthday) and 54 (as a kid it was my spy number, inspired by “Get Smart”). Silly personal stuff.

Spy Kit Surprise

New 07 Sep 2023 Asked by cursedereaper 50 Comments

With Spy Kit in blackboarder and _____ in Unhinged is it a when or if until we see a card that can be used for Grandeur even though it isn't the same card?

The fact that Spy Kit was printed in black border surprises me to this day. When I first saw it, I literally said, why is this Un-card here?

Silver Border Logic

New 09 Nov 2022 Asked by geistfueledscarecrow 39 Comments

Howdy Mark!If i may ask...why are cards that play around with names silver bordered/acorn stamped? Like yeah, it's a goofy idea...but it works perfectly well in constructed Magic, and the existance of cards like Spy Kit doubles down on that.Maybe there's a technical loophole i don't get? And thanks for reading!

It has to do with the fact that cards are printed in different languages yet mechanically have to function like the English version. It’s odd for a foreign card that starts with a certain letter not to start with that letter mechanically.

The only reprints we considered were the shock lands.

Request for Spy Kit Creature

May I request a legendary creature with the spy kit text?

Spy Kit is the card I’m most surprised isn’t an (acorned) Un-card.

Concerns of Black-Border Un-Cards

New 10 Dec 2021 Asked by bassimelwakil 94 Comments

For every player lamenting “I don’t like un-cards being black border because it makes it harder for ME to avoid them”… well, this is how silver-border players have felt for nearly 30 years. I’ve had to ask permission to use my favourite cards every time. That’s why when people go “well you can rule 0 it” it’s disingenuous because those players want their version of the game to be the only default. It’s gatekeeping. Why should I have to ask the commander player with a broken land destruction deck full of legacy staples if I can play contraptions or Spy tribal? I paid money for my cards same as anyone else. I shouldn’t have to ask permission to play my cards when no one else has to. Making un-cards default to being legal means mtg’s default is more inclusive. It’s a good thing.

The previous line between black border and silver border was drawn in an odd place. Mutate and meld are fine, but you can’t use Host/Augment is strange.

Sure.

Spy Kit and Princess Sparkle

New 11 Jun 2021 Asked by yd12k 59 Comments

since spy kit is already a topic of discussion, something I've always wondered: if I have it equipped on a creature, can I activate princess twilight sparkle's ability and have it work? My playgroup got in a debate since some of the names aren't cards, but personally I feel like it should work given the spirit of silver-bordered magic and also friendship

I’ve ruled it works.

Informal Name for Spykit

New 10 Jun 2021 Asked by reginakasteen 44 Comments

A followup question about Spy Kit: is there an informal name (in the vein of "cantrip") for equipment that gives +1/+1 and a unique effect?

There is not. Well, at least none that I’m aware of.

Color Identity Decisions

New 21 Nov 2020 Asked by people3004-deactivated20201122 97 Comments

Hey Mark! Are we seeing a shift from colour identity being primarily decided by flavour rather than mechanics? An example from Commander legends wsould be the Opposition Agent a black card flavour wise (being a spy for the Dimir guild) but a white/blue card mechanically (re: Aven mindcensor, Thada Adel, Acquisitor etc.). This is just one of many examples but I am curious to know if this is a design shift or just, for lack of a better term, "mistakes"

Color identity defines what is possible. An ability is primary, secondary and tertiary in various colors. Flavor can define which color, of those capable of the effect, might do it on any one card, but flavor won’t justify the use of something not allowed in a color. Also, a small tip for you. If you don’t understand why something is done, ask so you can get an understanding from the person who is more knowledgeable about the topic. It is better to accept that you don’t know why rather than assume it’s a mistake. It can cause the person you’re asking to see the question as an attack rather than an inquiry and thus might encourage them not to answer. In other words, how you ask a question can impede your ability to learn.

Synergy Possibilities for Spy Kit

New 12 Nov 2020 Asked by johannna 31 Comments

Can we get some synergy for spy kit in an EDH precon? Maybe a legendary shapeshifter that naturally has all card names, and an accompanying precon with a subtheme of Legalized name repetition (Brothers Yamakazi, grandeur, etc)? Or is that too implausible a theme?

Black border can only care about a specific name being the name of something. It can’t care about the quality of a name. Silver border has your back though.

Common MDFCs

New 08 Nov 2020 Asked by artemisisqueer 31 Comments

Was there any reason we don't have any common MDFCs? I was looking at making one-land spy for pauper using some MDFCs and when I checked, saw there were none I thought I should ask

It’s the kind of mechanic we tend to do at higher rarities.

Alternate Win Condition

New 09 Oct 2019 Asked by theactr-blog 35 Comments

Question! Twilight Sparkle's alternate win condition just lists creature names as a required "Group Win". Since most of those cards don't exist, and therefore aren't Legendary, could a creature equipped with Spy Kit fulfill that condition?

They are implied legendary as the ones that do exist are legendary. Plus, they are referencing famous characters.

Spy Kit Mechanics

Does Spy Kit give the names of cards in rules text?

Not on creatures that are legendary or heavily implied legendary (such as the My Little Ponies).

Spy Eye Loss

New 25 Jul 2019 Asked by magicthecasual 54 Comments

UN rules question: if I use spy eye, and my opponent has no cards in their library, do I lose?

Yes. The rules simply state you lose if you draw from a library with no cards in it.

Nonexistent Spy Type

New 25 Jul 2019 Asked by 1for3-for-president-of-haik-blog 29 Comments

Why isn't spy a creature type yet? Seems like it would be a staple of the Dimir. I don't really feel like I would be taking away from assassins as spies gather intelligence while assassins kill their targets.

Spy is a creature type… in silver border.
