EDH Format Debate

New 24 Dec 2022 Asked by mtgedhiction 65 Comments

Hey Mark, the new Norn has sparked a bit of debate within the EDH format. It’s comparisons have been to hullbreacher and Leovold. Some are predicting or arguing for a ban. I am curious how the effect relates to whites slice of the colour pie. ETBs are used across all colours but is specifically interacting with that style of trigger, is that supposed to be a strength for white?

Stopping ETB effects is quite white. I don’t think white is primary in copying ETB effects, but it can do it. Praetors often require some bending as few effects and their mirror are both primary in the same color.

BLUE's Use of Treasure

New 13 Apr 2022 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 42 Comments

Could you explain R&D’s philosophy with regard to how BLUE uses treasure? There’s been a couple cards (Malcolm Keen-Eyed Navigator, Prosperous Thief, hullbreacher) that feel a bit out of place to me. Not in line with how I expect blue to ramp generally

Blue really shouldn’t be making Treasure. We’ve justified it more than we should with Pirate flavor.

Treasures Mechanic Impact on Commander

New 10 Apr 2022 Asked by kriosuranous 55 Comments

I overall like treasures, but i feel like they are warping commander because three of the most overpowered cards of all time for the format (smothering tithe, Dockside Extortionist, and hullbreacher) all generate treasure, which leads to the mechanic being warping.

Ah, eternal formats, where mistakes live forever. : )

Color Choices for Prison Cards

New 10 Aug 2021 Asked by onebuckchuck 23 Comments

How do you decide what colors get a new prison card? For example, why does R&D decide to put cards like Dress Down and Hullbreacher into blue instead of white?

Different abilities overlap in multiple colors, so we tend to change it up a little over time for variety sake.

Commander Committee and Hullbreacher

If the commander committee sees the product beforehand then why was hullbreacher recently banned? Misjudgement of power level?

They’re not designing it. They look at it during set design and give feedback. Play design will later finalize costs, long after they’ve seen it.

Card Drawing Restrictions

New 12 Jul 2021 Asked by itsmearia 40 Comments

Shouldn't "each opponent can't draw more than one card a turn" type effects be white? It's the color that wants everyone to play fair after all. It's also the color that wants to set rules (Ethersworn Cannonist, Rule of Law, Deafening Silence). It even started in white with Spirit of the Labyrinth. What caused that ability to shift to blue (the color that already has the most ways to gain card advantage anyways)? It feels like Hullbreacher and Narset should be white cards and not blue.

The effect can be in white, but it’s also home in blue.

The Community's Love for Cycles

New 27 May 2021 Asked by strix-soven 66 Comments

"Everything does not have to be a cycle" The community is always hungry for a completed cycle even when it was unintentional. We still need a R, G, and W Flash 3/2 for 3 with an ability that punishes opponents for doing that color's thing. (Opp Agent & Hullbreacher)

We might take our time with this one. : )

Hullbreacher Card Query

New 01 Dec 2020 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 58 Comments

If Hullbreacher can't be a white card, does that mean that either Spirit of the Labyrinth or Smothering Tithe are no longer white effects? Because it seems like Spirit + Tithe pretty much make Hullbreacher, unless this is a case of "green gets deathtouch, and it gets fight, but it can't get a fight card with deatchtouch"?

Two things:1) It is possible for a color to do two things, but not be able to do those two things combined on a single card such as your green example.2) Those two cards combined are not the same thing as Hullbreacher. White can universally set rules to prevent something and it can tax something, but it doesn’t take something away from someone else and get a reward each time it does that.
