Appreciation for Arcbound Condor

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by edibleashell 8 Comments

Mark! Is birthday for me! I want to use my valuable birthday right to extend my extreme appreciation for whoever is responsible for Arcbound Condor. Such a wonderful card, definitely my favorite from the set and probably the year even. It fits in multiple decks I have and I'm just so happy it exists. So, for my birthday, cab you make sure the responsible party knows how appreciated they are? And if you want to share some arcbound/modular trivia that would be nice too.

The modular mechanic was inspired by the Chimeras from Visions. Happy Birthday!

Chimera Definition Support

New 16 Dec 2021 Asked by dmfmagic 32 Comments

Hi Mark! I believe the technical term for a half horse half human sewn together (or any two separate beings) would be a chimera. I've got your back on this one.

Thank you for that.

Trivia on Chimeras or Manticores

New 20 May 2021 Asked by calituco-blog 41 Comments

Hi Mark! Today's my 28th birthday! May I request a trivia on Chimeras or Manticores?

The Chimeras from Visions are the first cards to (kind of) use keyword counters. If we remade them today, they would definitely use keyword counters.Happy Birthday!

Likelihood of Changeling for Certain Creature Types

New 04 May 2021 Asked by ryuujin759 24 Comments

Hi Mark, how likely is it that creature types like Mutant and/or Chimeras (flavorfully) get Changeling and not just to Shapeshifters (though I love Shapeshifters of all shapes!) ???

Not super likely.

Old Cards Keyword Change

If keyword counters become evergreen, will old cards like the Chimeras that grant keywords indefinitely be errataed to use counters?

Possibly.

Spellheart Chimera Trivia

New 06 Feb 2019 Asked by pinkayechameleon-blog 34 Comments

Hey Mark, maybe it got lost in the shuffle, but yesterday was my birthday, so I'd like to re-request some trivia on the original spell drake, Spellheart Chimera.

Spellheart Chimera as an uncommon gold build-around draft card. We like having a cycle of multicolor cards that help communicate each two color archetype and the Chimera was that for blue/red in Theros.Happy Belated Birthday!

Existence of Chimaeras

New 30 Nov 2018 Asked by cle-guy 40 Comments

Why aren’t there chimaeras in mtg?

There are. Both Visions and Theros block had Chimeras and it’s a supported creature type. The Visions ones were artifact creatures for some reason.

Modular Trivia Origins

New 27 Sep 2018 Asked by hakkairequiem 30 Comments

I'm an avid Blogatog reader but I forgot to ask for my birthday question this year. If it's ok to have it late, I'd like some obscure trivia about Modular, as I started the game with the mono blue modular themed precon back in Darksteel. Thanks for your hard work and for the way you keep in touch with the community :)

Modular was inspired by the Chimera artifact creatures from Visions. Happy Belated Birthday!

Protection Keyword Status

New 30 Jun 2017 Asked by datwaldoguy 30 Comments

I saw the new Chimera spoiler and it got me to thinking about protection as a keyword. Is it gone for good or taking a hiatus?

It’s now deciduous and shows up infrequently.

Diverse Creature Requests

New 22 Oct 2016 Asked by arbiterofknollridge 64 Comments

You know why Kaladesh can't be the best set in recent history... No Minotaurs or barely any exotic creature types. (exotic for magic) Last Minotaur was in BFZ. My tribal minotaur EDH deck needs more MINOTAURS! May I request Minotaurs... Also Ooze, Cats, Fungus, Centaurs, Treefolk and perhaps even a Chimera again? Please? Rare or Uncommon. Commons doesn't count.

A perfect example that there are so many lenses through which players see the game.

Gargoyles and Grotesques

New 22 Dec 2015 Asked by mgmegadog 52 Comments

Gargoyles weren't even the winged statues on buildings. Those are called grotesques or chimeras. Gargoyles were statues used as drainpipes.

Tell that to Disney. : )

Illusion Enchantment Creatures

New 21 Nov 2014 Asked by danvogelsong 11 Comments

Why is it too late to make illusions enchantment creatures? Weren't all chimeras artifact creatures until recently? You could also include things like incarnations and avatars into that category of you need more to make critical mass.

Because we don’t want a world in which some illusions are enchantment creatures and some are not. We can’t change the old ones because that would be functional errata.

Arcbound and Omnath Trivia

New 16 Sep 2014 Asked by yupimmadbro 30 Comments

It was my birthday yesterday so I was wondering if you had any trivia on Arcbounds (besides Ravager wrecking face) or my favorite commander, Omnath, Locus of Mana?

The modular mechanic (aka the arcbounds) was me revisiting the chimeras from Visions.  Happy Belated Birthday!

Chimeras in Theros

New 08 May 2014 Asked by lhferree 29 Comments

How did the decision to make Chimeras a Blue/UR standard in Theros, when previously they were last artifact creatures, develop?

The real question should be why we’re they ever artifact creatures? In mythology they were always flesh and blood.

Off-Color Activation

New 22 Apr 2014 Asked by tonyredgravedmc 17 Comments

Okay, there's Hybrid cards and Gold cards, but what would you classify cards that are one distinct color, but with actual colored mana-costing abilities of a different distinct color, like Coastline Chimera for example, when Theros chimeras are GUR?

We call that an off-color activation.

Chimeras vs Hydras

New 05 Feb 2014 Asked by philbratcher 16 Comments

A chimera is a beast that is the embodiment of nature. It's a combination of a bunch of different animals all in one super awesome powerful beast. I feel like Chimeras would be a better choice than hydras, and would provide for more design opportunities. I think the reason a lot of people don't like hydras is because they're all just +1/+1 counters and effects that give them more. Dragon, Sphynx, Angel and Demon creatures have a lot more variance than the hydras.

To be an iconic creature you have to be something that people will known and easily identify. Each chimera looks different from the last which makes instant identification hard.

Infinite Combos Opinion

New 22 Oct 2013 Asked by mrkristopher77 21 Comments

How do you feel about infinite combos? There seems to be one in standard right now with Archangel of Thune, Horizon Chimera, and Fathom Mage.

I like combos, infinite or otherwise, when they are a fast way to win in a control deck but not when they are speed goldfish decks with no interaction.

Theros Chimera Hint

Are we going to see the first-ever non-artifact Chimera creatures in Theros?

Maybe. : )

Greek Mythology Creatures

New 01 Aug 2013 Asked by seanryan28-blog 22 Comments

Centaurs, Chimeras, Gorgons, Harpies, Manticore, Minotaur, Hydra, Sphinx, Spirits, Pegasus, Phoenix, Giants, Dragons, Demons, Angels all are in Greek mythology and all fit perfectly into the already established creature types in Magic. What other creature types am I missing?

You shall see. : )

Information on Theros

New 25 Jul 2013 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 19 Comments

Will Chimeras get any love in Theros?

I’m going to save you all some time. For right now, I’m not going to tell you anything more about what is or isn’t Theros. We gave you a lot of clues so please have some fun guessing ideas amongst yourselves. I’m just not going to tell you if you’re right or wrong.
