Type-Specific Abilities Viability

New 31 May 2024 Asked by meu133 45 Comments

Hi Mark, since you aren't doing abilities linked to types (the old "Walls can't attack" rule), what do you think about types linked to abilities? (things like Embalm & Eternalize granting the Zombie type or a rule saying "Mutated creatures are Mutants")

I’m not against the concept, but it has a pretty high bar to clear.

Creature Type Mechanics

New 02 May 2024 Asked by aalgot 37 Comments

Okay how about this, the creature type “mutant” exists, so how about updating the rules to make mutants able to mutate even if they are also human science a mutant not being able to mutate (see cytoplast manipulator) sound dumb.

We don’t like creature types having mechanical meaning. It’s why we made the defender keyword, so becoming a Wall didn’t inherently keep you from attacking.

Creature Type Choices

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by mythial-blog 28 Comments

When designing UB sets; is there more of a preference to use a creature type that already exists for a non-MTG creature, or to create a new creature type. And example that comes to mind is the Warhammer Astertes vs calling them something like "Mutant Humans" (not a perfect 1 to 1 but just for arguments sake).

There’s a delicate balance. We like using existing creature types where we can, but if something is core to a property, we’ll consider using it.

Suggested UB Sets

Star Trek and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universes Beyond sets please. They're both Paramount properties, and Hasbro has an existing relationship with them thanks to the GI Joe and Transformers films.Ninja Turtles would make a great set of Commander decks and Star Trek is worth a full draft set.

I’ll pass along the suggestions.

Professor X’s Color Identity

"Hi Mark! Have you done the X-Men yet? :) What is Professor X’s color identity? One color: blueTwo colors: white/blueThree colors: white/blue/black" What black aspects does Professor X has?

Professor X has, on numerous occasions, done quite questionable things to keep mutants alive.

Universes Beyond Creature Types

New 28 Aug 2023 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 77 Comments

I know this is something you're still testing out, so I'd like to give some feedback on it: I'd rather see fewer new creature types created for Universes Beyond. For example, for the upcoming doctor who decks, I would have liked to have seen "Artifact Creature- Alien Mutant" and "Artifact Creature- Robot Zombie" intead of "Dalek" and "Cyberman" respectively. It would allow for more synergies for one thing, since they can tie into existing typal synergies as well as give more members to types that were previously lacking, and just overall makes them feel more at home in magic as a whole. For all the same reasons magics own creature types were consolidated, I think UB ones should be too. But beyond that, I also just think it often sounds cooler. "Alien Mutant" is a lot more descriptive than "Dalek", telling magic fans who aren't familiar with doctor who a little about them, and imo just has a punchiness to it. It's also just less redundant. There's something to be said for the power of specific words, yes, but i think the name and art can do a lot of work there. You don't need "creature type: dalek", when you already have a picture of a dalek and "dalek" in the name.Thank you for listening!

Universes Beyond is young, so we’re still figuring out how best to handle creature types. I agree with you that I lean towards more general terms where appropriate.

Could we get more Mutants in red or is that strictly tied to blue and green?

We just need the right world.

Mutate Mechanic Explained

New 06 Jun 2023 Asked by blizzardstrider27 36 Comments

Is there a lore reason why creatures that are "human mutants" like those in the simic guild can't mutate, but their elven and merfolk mutants members can?

The non-Human rider was to capture the flavor specifically on Ixalan.

There’s always a chance. Let me know what licenses you’d like to see in Universes Beyond.

Master Biomancer's Flavor

New 30 Jan 2023 Asked by cwnate 55 Comments

What was was rationale behind Master Bionancer making all creatures enter as a Mutant if there is absolutely no Mutant support? I see the flavor, but was there a time were mutant would be mechanically relevant in the original set but it was abandoned and that part just stuck, or was another consideration? Its one of my pet cards and i love it, but it always made me wonder what was behind that part.

It was done for flavor, but with an eye to the fact that probably one day we’ll make some cards that care about Mutants.

X-Men Cards' Creature Type

New 08 Jul 2022 Asked by jjustin1379 40 Comments

If you made cards based on the x-men would they have creature type human? They are homo superior in the comics not homo sapiens.

They would most likely be Mutant Human because human is what they are a mutant of.

Hypothetical Spider-Man Card Type

If you printed a card of Spider-Man, would his type line be Legendary Creature - Human Spider Mutant?

I could see the argue for Human Spider. He is not a mutant. That word has specific meaning in Marvel.

Use of Mutant Creature Type

New 16 Feb 2022 Asked by charitycharicola 58 Comments

Hey Mark, is the Mutant creature type still used? I was a bit disappointed that none of the creatures with Mutate were creature type Mutant, and it makes me think that it is a retired creature type.

We still use Mutant. We just chose not to put it on creatures with mutate.

Order of Turtle Character Creature Types

New 25 Jan 2022 Asked by spaceyjdjames 88 Comments

If you did make a teenage mutant ninja turtle, what order would the creature types go in? Teenage turtle mutant ninja?

I assume we’d do Teenager and not Teenage as our creature types are nouns not adjectives. I believe this would be the order: Turtle Teenager Ninja Mutant. Turtle would come first as it’s essentially the race. Teenager is next as it speaks to age. Ninja’s next as it’s the class. Mutant is last because we tend to put Mutant last (it’s last on 51 out of the 53 non-Changeling Mutants) as it’s an overall modifier, I guess.

Erratum on Slivers' Non-Sliver Types

New 22 Jan 2022 Asked by tyranova 46 Comments

Just as a polite correction to "Slivers with non-Sliver types," not counting the two Playtest cards, there have been six non-Sliver types on Slivers: Fungus (Fungus Sliver), Illusion (Mistform Sliver), Trilobite (Scuttling Sliver), Construct (Sliver Construct), Mutant (Sliver Overlord), and Spirit (Spectral Sliver) with the two Playtest cards "technically" adding 2 more (Eldrazi and Dragon) for a combined total of 8/112 (~7% of all Slivers period) or 6/109 (~5.5% of all Slivers legal in most formats) of Slivers that have additional types, which I found interesting to look up (Just in case anyone was curious what other types were added onto Slivers)

Likelihood of Changeling for Certain Creature Types

New 04 May 2021 Asked by ryuujin759 24 Comments

Hi Mark, how likely is it that creature types like Mutant and/or Chimeras (flavorfully) get Changeling and not just to Shapeshifters (though I love Shapeshifters of all shapes!) ???

Not super likely.
