Hexproof and Un-Games

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by culation 4 Comments

CR 702.1c states that "the same is true for" effects apply to each of a keyword's variants separately. 702.11g states that "hexproof from each " is shorthand for one variant of hexproof per possible quality of that characteristic. This means in non-Un games, discarding Breaker of Creation (which has hexproof from each color) to Indominus Rex, Alpha gives five counters and thus draws five cards. How many cards do you draw in an Un game? (In particular, does every eye color count?)

In Un-games, when counting colors, you count the five normal colors plus any color of permanents you have. You have the gold Dragon token from Sword of Dungeons & Dragons, you’re now at six. You also have a brown Avatar of Me, you’re now at seven. You have a pink Teddy bear counter from Gift Shop, you’re now at eight.

Legal Cards Logic

New 17 May 2023 Asked by wtf-oclock 41 Comments

Why does the card ______ Goblin, which interacts with letters in names, get a pass as tournament legal but Gray Merchant of Alphabet, who arguably has a similar effect, is not legal?

The words you can add to _______ Goblin is a locked list, and they only exist in English. Gray Merchant of Alphabet cares about names on other cards which can be different when in other languages.

Praise for Gray Merchant

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by tybonel13 18 Comments

Mark! I love love love Gray Merchant of Alphabet! I'm still a bit iffy on this set overall, but I honestly don't think I've been more excited about a Theros reference. If possible, could you please distribute high-fives to any and everyone responsible?

Will do.

Cat Trivia

New 15 Feb 2020 Asked by coffeetime88 117 Comments

Hey Mark, could I get some belated birthday trivia on cats?

Sure. Cats was a long-running broadway musical (fourth longest on Broadway) based on a 1939 collection of poems by T.S. Eliot. Its most famous song is “Memory”. It was adapted into a movie with less successful results.Happy Birthday!
Oh wait, we’re you interested in Magic trivia? The first Cat was Savannah Lions in Alpha but it was printed as creature type Lions. The first Cat that was a Cat was Cat Warriors in Legends.

Birds of Paradise Origin

New 13 Feb 2020 Asked by calituco-blog 35 Comments

Where is the paradise from Birds of Paradise located? Dominaria?

I don’t think we’ve ever specified, but the majority of Alpha is set on Dominaria.

Alternate Universe MTG

New 24 Jan 2020 Asked by towel-guy 67 Comments

if you were put in a mtg less alternate universe, how would the first magic set you make look like (like, yes making MTG would be the best course of action)? like a modern core set but with origins' theme? just remake alpha?

Dual Lands Discussion

New 22 Jan 2020 Asked by jsyscryst 41 Comments

Is there a chance we could see duals that are better than shocks in a supplemental set to make older formats that rely on alpha duals more accessible?

I think the shock lands are about as good of a dual land as we want to print.

Pop Culture Mention

New 12 Jan 2020 Asked by sanschutz07 74 Comments

Magic Pop Culture in the wild: The Magicians on SciFi "I traded my Alpha Black lotus for wards on this place." "Wait, Magic cards are real magic?" "No, just extremely expensive." A character selling her vintage collection for coins that hold real magic in the show so the characters can cast spells because magic use is limited.

Thanks for sharing.

Dual Lands in Commander

New 05 Jan 2020 Asked by thegoblinguy 55 Comments

“When I say I don’t think they’re good for Magic that includes I don’t think they’re good for Commander.” - What makes you say this? For other formats, your justification is that it makes it easy to play too many colors but commander color identity solves that problem. Also, the battlebond lands are very similar to original duels and they haven’t caused problems.

What does color identity have to do with it? The Alpha dual lands make it to easy to play multiple colors in decks with lots of colors.

Prior Keywords Origin

New 30 Dec 2019 Asked by eyeball-frog 85 Comments

You mentioned there used to be nicknames for lifelink, vigilance, and haste before they were keyworded. What were they? What about other later keywords like reach, deathtouch, etc?

Vigilance was called the Serra ability after Serra Angel. Lifelink was called spirit link after the Legends card (which worked slightly differently than what we ended up keywording. Haste was called Raging after Raging Goblin or celerity which is what R&D called it.Reach was called the Spider ability after Giant Spider. Deathtouch was called the basilisk ability after Thicket Baslisk in Alpha. My point is that players will come up with slang usually based on the first and/or most popular card with the ability, but once we give it an official name, it eventually becomes the default. And yes, players always say they’re going to keep using the slang, but they don’t, not when the cards give it a real name.

Green vs Black Regrowth

New 19 Dec 2019 Asked by usernamesarehard17 39 Comments

Hi Mark, I just wanted to ask why is it that green gets regrowth effects and black has raise dead? Ignoring flavour because you can justify anything with it, green is the creature centric colour so it just seems philosophy wise it should be limited to raise dead effects rather than regrowth. Is this a grandfathered choice?

That’s just a choice grandfathered in from Alpha.

Enchantment Card Drawing

New 13 Dec 2019 Asked by cleverconvict 21 Comments

Drawing a card when you play an enchantment has bounced between Green and White - Verduran Enchantress in Alpha to 8th to Mesa Enchantress in M10 and M12 to Eidolon of Blossoms in Journey of Nyx and now Setessan Champion. Is this ability back only in green, or is it still part of white's color pie?

Both green and white have some access to it.

Artifact/Enchantment Creatures

New 13 Dec 2019 Asked by tmdoublezero 40 Comments

Without any payoff for them being artifacts/enchantments in the set(like being colorless), having creatures die in limited to a naturalize effect due to flavor seems a bit too arbitrary for my tastes.

But then dying to other specific qualities (power/toughness, creature type, CMC, etc.) is okay? Since Alpha, you could Shatter an artifact creature. I don’t see why Demystifying an enchantment creature is any different.

Black's Tutoring Origin

New 04 Dec 2019 Asked by jackpotpie 46 Comments

Why is black the color of tutoring?

It got grandfathered in from Alpha. I believe it was a top down design for Demonic Tutor.

Colored Artifacts Debate

New 26 Nov 2019 Asked by captainjackharness 48 Comments

Personally, if the question is "colored artifacts or less artifacts in general", I'd go with less artifacts. I don't think edging artifacts on to enchantments design space makes for a better game.

They’ve overlapped significantly since Alpha. Colored artifacts have been a thing since 2008 (technically the first one was 2007). I think this change is more psychological than practical. And we wouldn’t make this change if we didn’t feel strongly it was better for the game.

Alpha's Successful Launch Approach

New 26 Nov 2019 Asked by zanmor 29 Comments

If you were starting Magic new in a world where it had never existed and nobody knew of it, would your very first set be more like Alpha (kind of generic sword and sorcery fantasy) or something more like modern sets that show off a particular world and theme?

Alpha worked pretty well. I wouldn’t mess with success.

Playtest Cards Legitimacy

New 23 Nov 2019 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 46 Comments

A few of the playtest cards work within the rules and have reasonable names and textboxes, like Wizened Arbiter and Noxious Bayou. In theory, if Wizards decided to print these cards in an actual set, could they be printed exactly as-is text-wise?

In theory, yes. I think you are overestimating what is reasonable. I tried making Noxious Bayou as a blue/black dual land as part of my futureshifted land cycle in Future Sight, and the play design response was “hard pass”. Too much of the time it’s just an Alpha dual land with extra tracking.

Future Dominaria Focus

New 18 Nov 2019 Asked by mazu9 48 Comments

As someone who began following Magic lore in 2004, can I express my wish that future focuses on Dominaria not be limited to nostalgia/greatest hits and instead give an insight into a particular place or culture present on it as sets from Alpha to Scourge did?

Dominaria will continue to have a history focus, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any attention placed on certain places.

Fun Fact

New 30 Oct 2019 Asked by a-lien-kai 114 Comments

Hey Mark, it's my birthday, could you tell me a fun fact of any kind about Magic? ☺

The Alpha card Scavenging Ghoul has exact five vowels - a,e,I,o, and u, in alphabetical order.Happy Birthday!

Tutoring Mechanics

New 28 Oct 2019 Asked by soranetworker 41 Comments

Have you ever considered taking unconditional tutoring out of black? Seems like it's only there because it got grandfathered in by Alpha.

We’ve talked about it, but decided we liked it in black.
