Pitch Cards Design

You mentioned a while back that the problem with pitch cards discarding a different color is that it could lead to lead to color pie problems. Could a card be one color but pitch a different color if the effect was in pie for both colors? Like a naturalize effect in Green and white; or a redirect in Red and blue.


That is possible, but narrow in application.

Enchantment Creatures Future

If enchantment creatures became evergreen, what's more likely? Naturalize effects get weaker, or enchantment creature is treated as a drawback?


Naturalize effects are weak enough that them getting a little better would be fine.

Yes. Modality is not color assigned, but some effects that tend to be modal, like Naturalize, are.

Addressing Flavor Issue in Green's Design

Obviously mechanically Green as a primary Treasure producer makes sense; sustained mana production and whatnot. But some (perhaps a loud minority) seem to have a lot of trouble getting over the connotations of "artifact" as artificial and in an inherent conflict with Green's natural focus. Obviously good mechanical design and adherence to pie trumps flavor, but any thoughts on overcoming this flavor-inertia (if it even matters)?


I think this stems from a little misunderstanding of green. Green dislikes artifice not artifacts as a whole. There are both artifacts that are natural (which green has no issue with, and could even treasure) and enchantments that are unnatural. This is why Naturalize, a core green ability, destroys artifacts and enchantments, and not just artifacts.

Artifact and Enchantment Removal

Would it be possible to see a standard in the future where Green only got artifact removal and white only got enchantment removal? Just for a brief moment, letting naturalize effects rotate and giving both colors more limited removal.


We seem to be going in the opposite direction where both green and white have access to artifact and enchantment removal.

Green's Destruction Capabilities

Unless I'm mistaken, the reason green can kill enchantment creatures and remain in pie is because you usually don't include a naturalize or return to nature in your deck to kill creatures. It's not guaranteed to work, unlike murder


The reason is green is allowed to destroy artifacts, enchantments and lands, so it can destroy artifact creatures, enchantment creatures and land creatures.

Artifact Creatures Vulnerability

Artifact creatures are either in sets that care about artifacts or colorless, so them being artifacts has effects on gameplay beside being destroyed by naturalize ,an enchantment creature, or a colored artifact creature, in a set that doesn't care about these types at all would be like if a naturalize variant could also kill target noble or another type with no associated typical stats or color and no tribal support in the set.


Colored artifacts can be in a set without an artifact theme. Creatures can have extra qualities that make them more vulnerable. There’s nothing wrong with that from a design or gameplay perspective. It can be factored into their costing.

Enchantment Creature Removal

I get that Enchantment Creatures is the equivalent to Artifact Creatures and could as well be evergreen. But wouldn't that open Green up to straight up creature removal with Naturalize-like effects?


It can already destroy artifact creatures. Same difference.

Evergreen Enchantment Creatures

Sorry, I wanted to say that I'm not a fan of the idea of making enchantment creatures evergreen and in every set, stuff like power and toughness has implication outside shock/reave soul, destroy target creature type is mostly in tribal sets or for constructed, If there aren't cards in a set that care about enchants except naturalize and maybe a mythic, then the card being destroyed by a card that mostly destroy noncreatures due to flavor seems really arbitrary to me.


But artifact creatures dying to artifact destruction is okay?

Without any payoff for them being artifacts/enchantments in the set(like being colorless), having creatures die in limited to a naturalize effect due to flavor seems a bit too arbitrary for my tastes.


But then dying to other specific qualities (power/toughness, creature type, CMC, etc.) is okay? Since Alpha, you could Shatter an artifact creature. I don’t see why Demystifying an enchantment creature is any different.

Black and Red Removal

Since black now has a form of enchantment removal and red is still good at artifact removal, I'd love to see black and red card that is a variation on Naturalize (or Disenchant). I don't expect the same exact wording, but I do hope for a flavorful card name. Do you think I have long to wait?

Artifact vs Creature

If you had a set where every creature was an artifact creature, would you pull back on green naturalize since green doesn't get "destroy target creature" and in that format "destroy target artifact" functions the same? Maybe the answer is no, which I think would be informative for the commander bounce in blue, but if it's yes, how is that different?


In Mirrodin, green got more artifact removal not less while the number of artifact creatures was significantly higher. Green is allowed to destroy artifact creatures, so green’s ability to deal with creatures is better than normal on Mirrodin. Same with enchantment creatures on Theros.

Color Pie Balancing

Blue can counter anything, black can discard anything, white can destroy anything, and green can either naturalize or fight anything. How come red gets such a hard line on "absolutely no enchantment interaction, ever, in any way" when every other color gets some in-color way to handle all card types?


The colors’ weaknesses are all very different from one another. It’s not structured as being as parallel as each being unable to deal with a particular card type. That aspect is something red plays up more than other colors. Green, for example, has an over-reliance on a card type, but that type of weakness is not seen in another color. The color pie is constructed such that each color has unique problems. Red’s enchantment issue is easier to notice as it’s a specific card type a color can’t deal with and that’s just more visible than things like blue being more reactionary or white having card flow issues. In other words, you can frame it such that any color seems unfairly treated versus the other four if you look from the right vantage point.

White vs Green Efficiency

Given that White is supposed to only get "Disenchant" effects at higher rarities or less efficiently than Green, could it not be argued that 3-mana instant speed "destroy target artefact or enchantement with upside" like Expose to Daylight of Invoke the Divine is pretty close in terms of efficiency to Naturalize? If mana cost were the only criterion for efficiency then Fragmentize, as another recent print, gets involved in the conversation.


Green supposed to be a little better but it’s not a giant chasm.

Reprint Probability Query

How about a game called Stump Maro? We ask you a question about Magic Trivia. The stipulation is that the trivia has to be within what the Lead Designer of Magic should know, without an exhaustive knowledge of Gatherer and Oracle. Rules questions are fair game, since you made the mechanics. Obviously you are the final judge on what’s a fair question. First question: what is the most reprinted card, outside of A/B/U sets?


My best guess is Naturalize.
