Memnarch

Myr Alignment

New 17 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 36 Comments

Do Myrs truly have an alignment? I know they were built by Memnarch, but after that they kinda just hung out like lil robot goblins, until the Phyrexians, where they were... active dissedents? But other than some cards it just seems like they were just useful creatures for the Rebels to utilize.

The Myr work for whoever will allow them to be useful.

Vorthos Character Naming Limits

New 31 Oct 2023 Asked by thehigherdissidency 48 Comments

What's the limit of Vorthos character naming, in your opinion? Mirari became Memnarch; Narset of the Khans timeline and Narset of the Dragons timeline; Phage, Akroma, Karona, are all Jeska, that nonsense; Lim-Dul = Raven Man?; is there anything here that's off the table? Can you think of canon Magic lore that Vorthos "nonbo"s with?

If the two different named characters are clearly the evolution of the same being, it’s all good for Vorthos.

Character and Machine Naming

New 31 Oct 2023 Asked by neotrup 36 Comments

While I don't think The Skyship Weatherlight qualifies as a character, it does eventually turn into Weatherlight Compleated which does seem to qualify as a character since it moves of its own volition even after it's powerstone was removed. The question comes down to whether naming the character will count the machine that became it. So for a similar question: If I name Memnarch with Vorthos, will it count towards cards with Mirari in them?

If you want to name Weatherlight as a character, I won’t stop your fun. Have at it. Memnarch can count the Mirari, why not?

Given the new expansion of colored artifacts, if Memnarch were printed today, would it have blue in its casting cost?

Probably.

Major If. The Mirari is currently New Phyrexia and I believe Memnarch is dead.

Request for 'Father' Card

New 11 Jan 2019 Asked by msprzegaj 84 Comments

Mark, Today I have become a father :) Can I get a “maybe” on a creature card with “father” in its name? There are mothers (and smothers), sons (and arsons), sisters (and resisters), daughters, brothers and children, but neither Memnarch, nor Angrath are fathers by their cardname... And Bazaar of Baghdad doesnt count!

Had Karn been a legendary creature rather than a planeswalker in New Phyrexia, he was going to be called Father of the Machines.
As far as s new card with “Father”, Maybe. : )

Can you name more Phyrexian references from original Mirrodin?

The novel starts with the antagonist, Memnarch, finding the glistening oil and getting infected.

Memnarch Facts

Hey Mr Rosewater it was my birthday yesterday can I please have a fact about my favourite Legendary Memnarch?

Memnarch is infected by Phyrexian oil in the first few pages of the original Mirrodin novel, but few caught its significance at the time. Happy Belated Birthday!

Memnarch's Phyrexian Status

FYI: For the question about Memnarch being Phyrexian, it is not, but it was infested with Phyrexian Oil, leading to many of the events which occurred on Mirrodin.

Yes.

Phyrexian Planeswalker?

New 17 Feb 2018 Asked by junebug406-blog 36 Comments

Hi Mark. Will there ever be a Phyrexian Planeswalker, finally acheiving that artificial spark Yawgmoth and Memnarch wanted so bad? Or did this already happen and I never noticed?

Phyrexians can’t hold a spark.

Mirrodin Clues Inquiry

New 09 Apr 2017 Asked by ultwarrior 132 Comments

You've mentioned before that hints about the Phyrexians were hidden in the original Mirrodin block from the outset, but apart from the mycosynth, which always struck me as an easy retcon, I find them hard to see. Do you think we'll ever get an article or a podcast pointing them out, similar to how you've highlighted the jokes in Unhinged that may have been missed?

That will require some research as there’s no one left from the creative team that worked on Mirrodin to get all the references. The most obvious clue happens in the beginning of the Mirrodin novel where Memnarch discovers the Phyrexian oil.

Mirrodin to New Phyrexia

New 26 Jun 2016 Asked by revealingmetal 63 Comments

Why was the decision made to have phyrexia destroy Mirrodin? The original Mirrodin Set was when I started playing and I always thought it was and really interesting place.

Phyrexia’s eventual overrun of Mirrodin to become New Phyrexia was decided when we built Mirrodin. There are clues of Phyrexia’s presence in original Mirrodin. The Mirrodin novel even starts with Memnarch finding Phyrexian oil.

So how did the Memnarch use a soul catch if devices like portals and inter dimensional travel machines don't work anymore?

They exist. They are just much, much rarer than they once were.

Charms and Mana

"Charms are like any Magic card. You can only play them in a deck if you have the mana to cast them." Aww, you made Ornithopter and Memnarch sad!

Every deck has the mana to cast them. : )

Mirari's Journey Recap

New 06 Oct 2014 Asked by rebmcr 71 Comments

Mirari summary/correction: Karn took the Mirari from Dominaria after seeing the conflict it caused. He created a metallic plane, Argentum, and turned the Mirari into Memnarch to be caretaker there. Some Phyrexian oil got into Memnarch from Karn, he went nuts and turned Argentum into Mirrodin. In Fifth Dawn, Glissa and Slobad defeat Memnarch, and Karn turns him back into the Mirari. Glissa became the Mirari's guardian, and we haven't seen it since — but Glissa was Phyrexianized last we saw her...

Mirari's Fate

New 05 Oct 2014 Asked by moholmes 29 Comments

The Mirari was either turned into Mirrodin or Memnarch. I don't quite remember which, but I want to say Mirrodin.

It was Mirrodin but that doesn’t mean parts of the Mirari if not the whole thing is still on Mirrodin.

Mirrodin's Native Life

New 06 Aug 2014 Asked by xophnog 21 Comments

What were the original denizens of Mirrodin? A bunch of myr and golems and clockwork automata? Were there any organic creatures native to Mirrodin before Memnarch did his soul snatching from other planes?

I believe those creatures were all created and not native to the world (which was itself artificially created).
