Phyrexia Arc Feedback

New 09 May 2024 Asked by megastarfic 247 Comments

Hi Mark. I’m wondering if WOTC has heard some of the criticisms of the Phyrexia arc from trans and disabled fans. I honestly don’t know how prevalent the critique is but I’m surprised there hasn’t been at least a comment from WOTC staff about it. I have always loved how open WOTC seems to be to discussions of representation so I was very surprised when I felt two minority communities I am a part of never even got a “we weren’t thinking about it” or “we were aware but made these creative choices anyway.” Things as small as Kaya’s natural hairstyle rightly get while articles, but this gets nothing, and I’m wondering if you can tell us why.Ableism is often treated as the odd one out of the oppressions, as an afterthought. Did that happen here, or is there a rationale I missed? As someone with a surgically modified body of my own I was looking forward to my Xantcha to see myself in.

I haven’t heard the criticisms. Can you spell them out for me, as I do very much want to hear them?

Henchfolk Card Typing

New 06 Apr 2024 Asked by jimharbor 32 Comments

Why was Mercenary chosen for the henchfolk cards in OTJ instead of Minion? Thank you for answering our questions sir.

We support Minion in that we haven’t changed it from the cards that have it, but we don’t use it on new cards anymore. With the exception of three cards in Commander 2019 that were redone legendary creatures that were originally Minion (Chainer, K'rrik, and Xantcha), we haven’t printed Minion on a card since Legions in 2003 (21 years ago!)

Xantcha Character Misrepresentation

New 16 May 2023 Asked by jtfr96 53 Comments

Minor complaint that I know you have no control over, but a recent ad for the secret lair with Xantcha completely got her backstory wrong and labeled her a villain. As a massive Vorthos who's favorite character is her, it really did bug me to see her first public reference in years depict her wrong even if it was so minor. It really seems to cheapen the wonderful work Lynn Abbey did with that mostly forgotten novel

I’ll pass along the note.

Mercadian Phyrexians' Backstory

New 22 Aug 2021 Asked by jurrasicoresposts 37 Comments

The Mercadian Phyrexians and also Xantcha are all the same as the Phyrexians as the ones that invaded dominaria. This was all pre-mending when the phyrexians could use portals to move between various planes.

That’s what I thought.

Facts about Classic Magic Women

New 24 Feb 2020 Asked by salubriousmannequin 44 Comments

Birthday trivia! Can you give me something about one of my favorite classic magic women: Xantcha, Orim, And/or Belbe? (Telling me if Orim will get a second card or Belbe her first in the upcoming Commander stuff would be awesome, but you probably can’t do that)

Orim came about because we were using “Star Trek” as a model for the crew (it was a flying ship, after all) and we realized we needed a doctor. What better fit Magic than an actual Samite Healer?Happy Birthday!

Player-Controlled Cards

New 22 Jul 2019 Asked by rhonas-the-indomitable-blog 31 Comments

I think the prophecy question was specifically asking about "any player may activate this ability" effects like Xantcha, Sleeper Agent. How were those received?

They’ve never been particularly popular. Players prefer that only they can use their cards.

Praise for Commander 2018

New 24 Feb 2019 Asked by mrtitanic 84 Comments

You have to admit, for black border, the designs of many of the new character cards from Commander 2018 were some of the most innovative, boundary-defining cards I've seen. Arixmethes, Xantcha, Varchild, etc. They're not just amazing flavor captures of requested characters, but very fun and unique. Let's give C18 credit where it's due.

There are some very cool designs in Commander 2018.

Xantcha Gameplay Impact

New 26 Jan 2019 Asked by theelectricfrog 27 Comments

Regarding Xantcha, is it really a drawback to give you opponent a 5/5 if they can't attack you with it?

They can block with it and it lets them draw cards.

Xantcha's Power Level

New 26 Jan 2019 Asked by theelectricfrog 36 Comments

Is Xantcha a bend or a break? It's card draw in red that doesn't require discarding, and it's card draw in black that doesn't have a drawback for the person drawing the card.

No drawback? You gave your opponent a 5/5 creature.

Birthday Trivia Wish

New 22 Nov 2018 Asked by solanj 29 Comments

Hi! Yesterday was my birthday. Could you please share some trivia about Xantcha or Feather? Or, failing that, about a place with the best aesthetics ever aka Esper?

The Esper mini-team was made up of all Marks (me, Gottlieb and Globus).
Happy Birthday!

Minion Creature Types

If Minion is a class why do most, including Xantcha, not have race creature types?

Not every race has a corresponding creature type.

Karn's Spark Origin

New 13 May 2017 Asked by corveroth 87 Comments

Karn's first spark was, if you go way back, Glacian's. Glacian was the Thran architect responsible for creating powerstones. When he died, his spark was trapped within the powerstone that Urza and Mishra shattered and split. When Urza should have died in the Sylex Blast, the powerstone became his eyes, and acted as his own spark. Gerrard tore Urza's eyes out at the climax of the Phyrexian Invasion, and Glacian's spark transferred to Karn. Xantcha was Phyrexian and had no spark.

Karn's Spark History

New 13 May 2017 Asked by roastedgravy 26 Comments

On Karn, wasn’t it that he inherited Urza’s spark, then was given Venser’s spark to save him from Phyresis?

I believe the first time was Xantcha’s spark.

Phyrexians Holding a Spark

New 07 Oct 2016 Asked by sebasgl1 25 Comments

hi maro, you have said a lot of times that phirexian can't hold a spark, but reading with detail about karn get in urza's spark, what makes karn capable of holding the spark is that is completly sentinet thanks to the hearthstone of xantcha (a phyrexian sleeper agent, for those that dont know), he, all the biological phirexians and all the artificial phirexians with a heartstone look capable of holding a spark. PD: why the legacy didn't activation didn't purgue karn from the glistening oil?

The Phyrexians being unable to hold a spark is due to some quality unique to the Phyrexians.
