Crovax Story Arc

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by wherehavealltheuswrnamesgone 36 Comments

What was your plan for Crovax in the original Weatherlight story?

He became part of the crew. We wanted all five Magic colors, and colorless/artifacts, represented, but feel they wouldn’t let a Vampire join them. So, we wanted Crovax to prove himself before being turned into a Vampire, so there was a reason for him to stay.

Stat Modifiers Color Identity

New 25 Mar 2024 Asked by zorroaburrito 21 Comments

Would a static +1/+1 for your creatures and -1/-1 for opponent creatures (like Elesh Norn or Crovax) be in pie for mono-B? Or any single color?

Monoblack is the best place for it.

Weatherlight Saga Original Vision

New 06 Feb 2024 Asked by ultwarrior 50 Comments

Invoking the hallowed and ancient rite of birthday trivia, I was wondering if there was anything new you could share about your original vision for the end of the Weatherlight Saga? Failing that, is there a villain in Magic's past that you personally would like to see return?

Our original pitch was for a three-year story (with the idea that we’d tell more stories; this was the first story arc). Year one was Rath. It mostly matched with what happen save Crovax going evil and killing Mirri.Year two was Mercadia. A completely different story, and a very different world from what was made.Year three was Dominaria, but in the future. The crew returned to warn Dominaria about the upcoming Phyrexian invasion only to learn the portal they traveled through sent through time and the Phyrexians have already taken over Dominaria. The crew is able to defeat both the Phyrexians (using the hourglass pendant to rewind time) and Volrath who is aboard the ship disguised as Tahngarth.Happy Birthday!

Weatherlight Crew Remakes

New 25 Feb 2023 Asked by dantebeleren-deactivated2023062 35 Comments

How likely will we get remakes of the rest of the Weatherlight crew? Specifically Starke, Orim, Rofellos, Crovax (pre-curse/Evincar), and/or Takara?

I assume it will happen eventually.

Weatherlight Crew Cards

New 12 Feb 2023 Asked by dalenthas 43 Comments

Can I request modern takes on the remaining members of the Weatherlight crew who haven't gotten them yet? Crovax, Orim, Starke, Takara, pre-Completion Ertai. I would also like new cards for related characters like Eladamri and Selenia.

How about poor Lyna? She’s never even gotten one card (save a Vanguard card). Takara didn’t have one for years.

Favorite Evincar

Lore-wise, who is your favorite evincar of Rath: Crovax or Volrath?

Volrath. I believe Crovax never should have had that role.

Crovax Character Arc

In your original Weatherlight Saga, did Crovax become a non-evil vampire?

Basically. He had his urges, but was going to be a member of the crew and be a good guy.

Urza's Four Card Counts

New 18 Nov 2021 Asked by capnsammy 34 Comments

Urza has 4 cards: one in disguise as Blind Seer, one that's himself as a creature, one as a planeswalker head in Unstable, and a Vanguard card!

I don’t think we’re counting Vanguard cards as they are oversized cards that can’t go into a deck. Crovax and Mirri hit four if we do.

Predicting Future Character Cards

New 18 Nov 2021 Asked by j-waffles 70 Comments

Omnath and Niv Mizzet are the only characters to have 4 creature cards representing them, more than any other character. In the hypothetical where you don’t know what’s going to come out soon, who do you think is most likely to be the next character to join that club?

Do any other characters have four copies? And who has three? Off the top of my head - Olivia Voldaren, Crovax, Mirri, Rakdos? Who else?

Elesh Norn and Crovax in White

New 12 Oct 2021 Asked by the-darklorous 21 Comments

Are Elesh Norn and Crovax, Ascendent Hero in colour for white?

-1/-1 to others is a big bend in white.

Monowhite Capability Query

New 26 Aug 2021 Asked by zorroaburrito 28 Comments

Is the static -p/-t on Crovax and Elesh Norn an ability that monowhite is still allowed to have?

It a bend we allow white very infrequently.

Crovax's original color

Before Crovax became a vampire, what color(s) was he and why?

He was still black. He was a self-centric nobleman.

Arvad versus Crovax Story

New 18 Feb 2020 Asked by gus-goose 32 Comments

Was Arvad the cursed from Dominaria your attempt to “fix” Crovax’s story by having a loyal vampire?

Maybe, but not my doing.

Crovax's Crew Loyalty

New 18 Feb 2020 Asked by rakdosfiesta 43 Comments

I remember one of the main concepts for Crovax was that you wanted a vampire on the Weatherlight crew. Was Crovax originally intended to stay on the crew longer after his transformation into a vampire, or was he always meant to betray and leave the crew immediately afterward?

In our version he stayed on the crew as a loyal member.

Reverse Anthems

New 12 Dec 2019 Asked by belteshazzar98 40 Comments

Are "reverse anthems" like Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite and Crovax, Ascendant Hero still in pie for white?

No, those are bleeds for specific set flavor. That’s not normally a white thing. White’s more of a team player.

Mirri/Crovax Fates

New 06 Nov 2019 Asked by asksweetjasmine 29 Comments

Hey Mark! You previously posted you were a big part in Mirri/Crovax's alternate versions in Planar Chaos: can you please tell me more/tell me where to find out more about the ultimate fates of these alternate Mirri/Crovax? I'm desperate to find out whether or not there was a resolution (some say Mirri was killed, some say not, etc...) and hope you can help!

Mirri lives in the alternate reality.

Noble Creature Type

New 27 Sep 2019 Asked by sfanative 55 Comments

Hi Mark, Since the errata for the creature type "Noble" took place, shouldn't Crovax, Ascedant Hero have this creature type? He is a noble of Urborg in the story.

I believe we’re using Noble to imply some kind of leadership role which Crovax never held in Urborg.EDIT: Eli says they just missed it.

Decoupling Legendary Status

New 18 Sep 2019 Asked by chibinyanta 40 Comments

What would be the point of decoupling legendary when that's the whole point of legendary? Like "Hooray, this unique location can be a legendary land... but I can have 75 copies in play just like any other card now so who cares?" Besides, some of us LIKE being able to see how many Crovax's we can have in play at once and that's no fun if you remove any sort of challenge to it :P.

There’s a major format that’s defined by legendary creatures and we make cards and sets that care about legendary as a quality. If we could up our number of them because we get rid of the downside baggage, we could even make more of them, making it easier to have occasional legendary themes. Think of it this way. Some players seem to adore snow and outside of mana producing cards, it’s just a marker. Same with creature types. Markers on supertypes and subtypes are well liked.

Nemesis Trivia

New 22 Aug 2019 Asked by jet-set-jaguar 27 Comments

It's my birthday! I was hoping I could get some trivia on one of my favorite sets Nemesis?

Mercadian Masques block is interesting in that each set takes place on a different plane. Mercadisn Masques is set on Mercadia, Nemesis is set on Rath, and Prophecy is set on Dominaria. Nemesis is also the first set to have a second version of a legendary creature (Crovax), but now changed due to the story. Happy Birthday!

C19 Art Choices

New 12 Aug 2019 Asked by thewonderdoc-deactivated2020013 37 Comments

Mark I very much look forward to playing with some of the cards from C19. But one thing stuck out to me: Gerrard has the Weatherlight crew in the background of his art. Greven has Crovax and Volrath behind him. Why wasn't Vhati il-Dal also depicted behind Greven? He's one of the more memorable characters connected to him.

The artist picked the images he thought made the art look the best.
