Nostalgic Feelings

New 22 Nov 2019 Asked by silpheed-tandy 131 Comments

is there a word that means "the feeling you get when you come across wonky, terrible Homelands and Fallen Empire cards, and suddenly feel a yearning for those innocent days when you would get excited when your big brother would buy you m:tg cards from the vending machine at the hockey arena that would dispense wonky, terrible Homelands and Fallen Empire cards"?

I’m sure there’s a word for that in German. : )

Serra Angel Trivia

New 11 Oct 2019 Asked by leonardbrutus316 66 Comments

Hi Mark, it's my birthday today. Might I ask for some trivia about the 'original' Serra Angel and/or maybe a specific question? Was Serra as a planeswalker as we know her today part of the concept from Day 1? I started playing when Revised was just out and cannot recall any such info available back then. Keep up the good work and cheers to the team, Heiner

When Richard Garfield made Serra Angel, the word Serra came from “serrated”, as in a blade, as the creature was a warrior. I don’t believe there was any intent that it was specifically referencing a person, let alone a planeswalker.I believe Serra, as a planeswalker, first came about in the story for Homelands. The set borrowed a lot of inspiration from popular cards in Alpha which included Serra Angel.Happy Birthday!

Draftable Set Quality

New 08 Oct 2019 Asked by thasgar 21 Comments

From what I've heard, old sets like Alpha, The Dark, and Homelands weren't very draftable.

Fair enough. I was talking modern times. And as has been pointed out, the collector booster and theme boosters aren’t designed to be drafted.

Weapons Rack Inspiration

New 08 Oct 2019 Asked by bashleytrashley 21 Comments

hi mark! I was wondering if weapons rack was in any way a callback to serrated arrows from everyone's favorite set, Homelands? (my friend and I made a cube for it) :D also could I get an update on koth's position on the venser scale?

It wasn’t a conscious inspiration.

Joven's Ferrets Trivia

New 23 Sep 2019 Asked by orca-iguana 43 Comments

It is my dad's birthday tomorrow, and as he is the one who got me into magic, I was wondering if you had any trivia on his favorite card, Joven's Ferrets?

Joven’s Ferrets is a referencec to one of Homelands’ designers, Kyle Namvar. I think Joven was a nickname and he owned a ferret. Happy Birthday to your dad!

Homelands Naming Reason

New 22 Sep 2019 Asked by phoenixfyre0012 31 Comments

What is Homelands called Homelands. I believe it is the only set that is not second or third in a block that does not reference the plane it's set on

It was at a time when we weren’t doing tons of sets in other worlds, so we hadn’t really hit on the “put the plane name in the first visit” idea. I think the name represented that Serra and Feroz we’re making a safe zone. I’m not sure though.Tempest is another example and one could argue Arabian Nights.

White's Card Draw History

New 20 Sep 2019 Asked by originalskaiil 40 Comments

As a matter of trivia, symmetrical draw actually isn't 100% new for white. There are two very old "Truce" cards, one from Portal and one from Homelands, that cause each player to draw two cards or forego drawing to gain life. There's also a monowhite Parley card from Conspiracy which does, strictly speaking, cause each player to draw a card.

The two cards you’re taking about are pre-color pie monitoring. Parley is just an example of slight bends when we cycle mechanics through all five colors. Happily Ever After is the first time we’ve made a conscious decision to make this ability part of white.

Creature Type Errata

New 18 Sep 2019 Asked by quiveringgrey-blog 40 Comments

With Warlock and Noble new creatures types, will we see older cards get errata? Like Dread Warlock from 2010, or Faerie Noble from Homelands?

I know they’re going to errata a bunch of old cards with Noble. I’m not sure about Warlock as that’s harder to understand what gets it without the words to guide you.

Ulgrotha's Potential

New 16 Aug 2019 Asked by penguinhorowitz-blog 48 Comments

Wouldn't "Ulgrotha" benefit from a lot of people not even knowing it was the Homelands plane? You'd basically have the chance to build whatever you wanted mechanically while expanding on the lore. Vorthoses would be thrilled and non-Vorthoses wouldn't even realize it was a Homelands sequel.

There isn’t much more to build on. You got the Sengir family and it drops off fast after that.

Kamigawa vs Ulgrotha

New 16 Aug 2019 Asked by arjaysking-deactivated20200207 58 Comments

"Return to Kamigawa is a challenging sell, but possible. If I attempted Return to Homelands, they’d assume I was joking. : )" Don't ell it as 'Return to Homelands'. Sell it as 'Ulgrotha'. Make it it's own thing. You recently asked people here how they would feel about returning to a plane if the mechanics were different. I can understand not wanting to go back to Rabiah in any way. You can go back to Ulgrotha and make it better. It's been established Sengir's bloodline goes beyond Ulgrotha.

Kamigawa has a pretty loud contingency. Ulgrotha does not.

Challenging Set Returns

New 16 Aug 2019 Asked by shemnon42 65 Comments

What's a harder sell to upper management: Return to Kamigawa or Return to Homelands?

Return to Kamigawa is a challenging sell, but possible. If I attempted Return to Homelands, they’d assume I was joking. : )

Un-Set Sequel Ideas

New 03 Aug 2019 Asked by 1for3-for-president-of-haik-blog 43 Comments

Can the next Un Set be Homelands 2: Unexpected Unreturn or something?

If I’m able to do a fourth Un-set, my hope is to swing a little bit higher than that. : )

Rath and Innistrad Overlay

New 31 Jul 2019 Asked by chetskolos 70 Comments

Back in Invasion, the Plane of Rath was "Planar Overlaid" onto Dominaria. Could Ulgrotha Overlay onto part of Innistrad? The goal being to introduce some of Ulgrotha history onto Innistrad. A revisit of Innistrad could then have throwback cards looking at Homelands.

What Upgrotha history are you wanting to save?

Good Mechanics Bad Set

New 29 Jul 2019 Asked by maddieandherboobs 63 Comments

What would you say is the best example of a good mechanic from a bad set? Does anything from Homelands, Kamigawa or Prophecy hold up?

Ninjitsu from Betrayers of Kamigawa is a good mechanic.

Erasing a Card

New 29 Jul 2019 Asked by teh-maxh 50 Comments

If you could make one card not exist, which would it be and why?

Leeches, from Homelands, because I believe the identity of poison in Magic is it can’t be removed.

Failure Spurs Change

New 26 May 2019 Asked by silpheed-tandy 45 Comments

you sometimes mention that success breeds repetition. but isn't it sometimes true that non-success breeds desire for a re-do (e.g., Homelands, Fallen Empires, Kamigawa)?

Failure breeds change. The feeling of a need of a redo plays into my lesson about not doing things to prove you can. It comes from designers’ egos, not from a sound place of business.

Oketra Reach Debate

New 08 May 2019 Asked by planswalkerus-blog 102 Comments

For the people complaining that oketra doesn't have reach: there are 16 white archers in all of Magic's history. The only four to have reach are from Portal, Tempest, homelands and vision. The most recent reprint was 7th edition. There are people old enough to legally drive in the US who were not even born the last time a white Archer had reach. It would be inconsistent with how white archers have been mechanically represented for over a decade to give Oketra reach because she uses a bow

A fine point.

Homelands Lessons Learned

New 05 May 2019 Asked by spartacusreturned 102 Comments

What was the biggest success of Homelands?

It helped upper management learn to trust R&D on gameplay decisions. (R&D’s recommendation was not to release it.)

Homelands Time Issue

New 09 Feb 2019 Asked by remasuri 30 Comments

"Chandler has long since died. Thousands of years have passed in world since Homelands" Is that really a problem? Why can't you just go back to the time we left homelands?

We now have an ongoing storyline, so it requires time travel or a relevant flashback.
